Dai, born as Dino, is the titular main protagonist of the manga/anime series Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai.
He is a boy from Dermline Island who aspires to be a hero and Brass's adoptive grandson. After meeting the hero Avan and his sidekick Popp, he and Popp are mentored by him until the Dark Lord Hadlar's return. After Avan apparently sacrifices himself to save them, Dai and Popp go on a journey to stop Hadlar and his master, the Dark King Vearn. It is later revealed that he is the long-lost son of the Dragon Knight Baran.
In Japanese, he was voiced by the late Toshiko Fujita in the 1991 anime and Atsumi Tanezaki in the 2020 anime. In English, he was voiced by Sabrina Pitre in the 2020 anime.
Appearance[]
Dai is a preteen with spikey black hair, black eyes, and a small scar on his left cheek. He first wears blue linen plain clothes polo shirt with torn sleeves and a tied belt, a wood circlet, sandals and bear arms and a wooden sword on his back. He later wears blue clothes with metal protector, black boots, and armlets with pink lining and a golden circlet around his head with a ruby in the middle. He keeps a steel broadsword with spikes at the guard going towards the hilly.
Personality[]
Dai is friendly, yet naïve kid with a strong sense of justice. He greatly idolizes heroes, desiring and training to be one, much to the annoyance of Brass who wants to mold Dai as a mage, which Dai dislikes because his lacks at magic. He's an energetic and naïve person, due to being raised by monsters alone for most of his life. Because he doesn't contact humans, he always assumes the best in people instead of deducing any ulterior motives, as seen in the cases of the Fake Heroes, Varon and Temjin. However, as he goes through the adventure, he proves that he is actually smart and a fast learner.
Being raised by monsters on the Dermline Island means that Dai has a problem in socializing with people. Despite this, he gets along with the monsters, who he sees as family, even though he is occasionally annoyed with Brass' strictness. He even wants to save the monsters instead of escaping alone. His love for his family is once exploited, but it also allows him to reach his fullest potential.
Dai's most prominent trait is his courage. He will always try to overcome obstacles and never back down no matter the hardship, which wins many people to his side. Even when people are giving up their hopes against Vearn, Dai still goes against him, inspiring his friends' morale again. However, this also makes him reckless, such as when he refuses to run away from the battle with Flazzard despite knowing that the Blizzblaze Curse Field has drained his powers.
Dai greatly looks up to the legendary hero Avan and strives to be like him, a dream comes true when Avan himself and Popp arrive to the Dermline Island and meet him. When Avan seemingly sacrifices himself, Dai and Popp vow to follow his wish to take down Vearn and Hadlar at all cost, the very motivation that drives Dai and his party for most of the series.
After seeing the humans terrified of his power after the battle in Bergana, Dai suffers an identity crisis and begins to question whether or not he belongs to humans. Upon learning of his true heritage as a Dragon Knight, he believes himself to be a monster and that even his friends will fear and reject him. However, after meeting his father, Baran, the true Dragon Knight, he rejects the latter's misanthropic views and sides with humanity.
Biography[]
Dai was born Dino, the son of the Dragon Knight Baran and Princess Soala of Alkeed. However, they were ambushed by the king and his forces before Baran is taken into an Alkeed Kingdom for an execution while Dino was banished into the Dermline Island (which began the entire story as result). A storm happened and wrecked the ship, and Dino got washed up to the shore of the Dermline Island. Brass took him under his wings and named him Dai. He wanted Dai to grew up as a Mage one day despite he has troubled controlling his magic. After Dai inadvertently brings a group of fake heroes to the island, he and the other monsters were attacked by them before they're taking away Gomechan. He and the other monsters later helped Dai get Gomechan back from the group of fake heroes, which Dai was later crowned with Crown of Champions and earning the title of Hero. The next morning, Dai whiningly demanded him to give back the Crown of Champions, unaware that Gomechan has took it.
Three months later, Princess Leona and her subjects arrived at the island for a ritual to receive a blessing from the Earth God. While waiting for Dai, Leona and Varon, Gome went to informed Brass that Dai and Leona are attacked until they were stopped by Temjin and his subjects so they would prevent from helping them both. While they were attacked by Varon's Killing Machine, Brass and the others witnessed Dai awakening his powers and destroyed the machine, defeating both Varon and Temjin as result. After the ritual, Brass was seeing Leona left to return to her kingdom.
When the Dark Lord Hadlar seemingly returned, the Great Hero Avan and his disciple Popp traveled to Dermline Island in search for the new hero. Avan casted a golden magical barrier to protect the island and its monsters from Hadlar's dark magic. While he and Dai are training at the island, they were later encountered by Hadlar who wants to get revenge on him since his last defeat fifteen years ago. When Avan is almost getting killed, Dai jumps in and attack Hadlar, which almost got him and Popp killed because of this. After Avan almost sacrificed himself to death, Dai later managed to defeat him with Avan Strash, forcing the Dark Lord to retreat.
The next morning, Dai and Popp went on a journey to defeat the Dark Army. While they're getting lost in the forest at the Romos Kingdom, Dai and Popp went to save Mina from the monsters and met Maam for the first time. Believing Maam to be a "stuck up girl", Popp angrily storms off with Dai. As they're still lost at the woods, they were encountered with Beast King Crocodine, forcing Popp to cowardly ran away until he encounters with Maam again. After Maam saved Dai from being killed by Crocodine, Dai and Popp agreed to stay at Nayla Village for a while. Popp believed that Maam will join with them in their journey, causing Dai to tease him for having crush on her. By the next morning, Maam later joins with Dai and Popp in their journey.
When the trio finally reach to the Romos Kingdom, they were forced to stay at the inn for the night because the castle was closed due to recent monster attacks. The next morning, Dai went to fight Crocodine who leads an attack on the kingdom. Though Popp refused to come with Maam to help Dai, he was later encouraged to do so by the fake Mage Mesopho. When he got to the castle, Popp stands up to Crocodine for his horrific actions against Dai and Maam, which led him getting beaten up as result. By shattering a diamond on his magic rod, he used five shattered pieces to cast a Glimmer spell on Brass, freeing him from the Dark Army's influence and allowed Dai to finish off Crocodine with an Avan Strash, which Popp became one of the reasons why Crocodine has later redeemed himself. They were later hailed as heroes for this.
When the trio got to the Papnica Kingdom, Dai, Popp and Maam were horrified to discover the kingdom was in ruins after the Dark Army attacked here. They later first met Hyunckel who seemingly saved them from the skeletons, but Popp managed to see right through his facade as the "good guy". When Dai and Maam attempt to offer to join with them, Hyunckel refused and summoned a bunch of skeletons to attack them and revealing that he's the Undead Legion Commander, as well as his hatred towards his former master out of false belief of him killing his adopted father Bartos. However, Crocodine turned out to be alive and managed to stop Hyunckel and escort Dai and Popp away from him, while leaving Maam to be held prisoner. After they were rescued by Princess Leona's swordsman Baduck, Dai and Popp devised their plan to defeat Hyunckel by the latter casting Reclimatise to summon the coulds before the former summoned Zapple on him. When they later got to the Colosseum of the Underground Palace, Dai and Popp attempt to summon a lightning at Hyunckel, but to no avail. However, Maam later escaped from her cell and revealed the truth about the death of Hyunckel's adopted father. Despite Hyunckel angrily refused to believed it, he later had a change of heart after Dai defeats him with Lightning Strash and Maam forgives him. Flazzard attempt to drown them in lava, but only for Hyunckel to be left alone here after he escort the trio to escape.
Flazzard later attacked the Papnicans' new place, and the party went to rescue them and Princess Leona. While a reformed Hyunckel went to save Popp and Maam from getting killed by Hadlar and help them destroy the Dark Ice Spire, Crocodine and Gome arrived to save Dai and Baduck from getting killed by Mystvearn and Zaboera and help them destroy the Dark Flame Spire. After the Dark Flame Spire is destroyed, the Blizzblaze Curse Field has been deactivated around Valge Island and Flazzard went to confront and fought with the heroes. After Flazzard is finally defeated, he and the others went back to the Valge Tower to help freeing Leona from being frozen, with Crocodine intially considering of shattering the ice but was turned down by Baduck out of fear for her well-being. However, Dai later charge the bullet with Sizzle so Maam could use it to freeing Leona from being frozen.
Back at the Papnica Kingdom, everyone were celebrating over their victory against Flazzard. Crocodine and Hyunckel later departed themselves from the Papnica Kingdom to spy on the Dark Army to find out what they're up to. The next morning, both Crocodine and Hyunckel discovered they lost their trail on the Sovereign Rock Castle, with the former left to warn Dai and his friends about it while Hyunckel followed the footprints. He later arrived at Teran Kingdom to help and protect Dai and his friends while fighting Baran. He tried to convince Baran to reconsider his ways by telling his experience with Dai before he was attacked. Aftar Baran removed Dai's memories with his resonance, the party felt like they've lost their hope to stop the Dark Army without getting his memories back.
The next morning, the party went to the castle where they seek help from the king, which he agreed by placing Dai at the castle dungeon for protection, but Popp claims that he'll run away since everyone is doomed all because Dai lost his memories. When Baran arrived at the Teran Kingdom castle, Crocodine and Leona went to face him while also discovering that Popp only lied in order to protect his friends, including Dai. When Baran is about to kill both Leona and Crocodine, Hyunckel later arrived with Popp being rescued in his arms and threw the Dark Armour Spear at the Dragon Legion Commander. Hyunckel attempt to reasoned with him, but only for Baran to become enraged and transformed himself into Dragonoid to finish the heroes.
However, Dai later appears after he escaped from dungeon. When Baran was about to influence the young Dragon Knight, Popp went to defend him from being influenced by Baran and jumping towards him to cast Megante at him in hopes of finishing him for good, but at the cost of his life and succeeds in helping Dai regain his memories back. Now that Dai regained back his spirits and fight against his father, Crocodine threw Hyunckel to the air to help him give Dai a Dark Armour Blade, allowing him to finish off Baran once and for all. Despite their victory, Dai and his friends are still devastated over Popp's demise before Baran revived him with some of his blood before parting his ways so he could wait for him to settle his score with Dai to determine the fate of humanity.
Later that night, Dai and his friends went back to sleep in a wooden cottage while they're almost getting ambushed by Hadlar and Zaboera who attempt to slaughter them all if it weren't for Matoriv and Dai. The next morning, Dai and his friends return back to Papnica Kingdom where Crocodine later helps Dai with his training. After Dai, Popp and Maam returned from the Romos Kingdom after defeating Zamza, he first met a fellow monster named Chiu. When Princess Leona is having a grand world summit, he began to look away from the King of Romos in shame the last time they encountered, but the king didn't mind as he knew he's now friends with Dai. When Mystvearn arrived at Papnica Kingdom with Sovereign Rock Castle with him, he later went to help the heroes fight against Myst's Shadow Soldiers until Myst appears and attacked them all with Dark Puppetry Aura Decimation Field. However, Dai later arrived with his new sword, before he defeated Mystvearn and destroyed the Sovereign Rock Castle. Enraged, Mystvearn attempt to reveal his true appearance to unleash his ultimate power at the heroes before Killvearn arrives and stop him from doing so.
When they finally got to the Tower of Supremacy, the party save for Dai, Popp, Avan, Larhart and Hym ended up getting turned into Eye Jewels by Vearn. When Vearn is about to detonate the Black Cores out of desperation, Leona's wish of the ones who were being trapped inside an Eye Jewel to move and do something is finally granted, allowing them all to move by themselves to stop him from doing so. After the heroes are being escorted away from the fight between Dai and Vearn, they ended up in the Heart of Vearn Palace. After Hym unleash the Grand Cross to escape, they managed to land down to the ground safely. Noticing that Dai is still fighting against Vearn from above, he and the others hoping that he could win.
Following Vearn's death at the hands of Dai, everyone are witnessing him falling from the sky until Popp went to catch him. Hearing about what happened to Vearn, everyone were celebrating over their victory against the Dark King. Flora reminded Leona to keep Dai out of sight because she doesn't want him to end up like Avan who disappeared following his last battle with Avan, humiliating him in front of his disciples as result. Once they're about to go home, Killvearn appears in front of them to mockingly congratulates them of their victory. He later reveals his true identity to them, was "Piroro" who is the true mastermind behind the puppet's actions, and later activating the Black Core inside the puppet's head to destroy the entire Surface World, along with the six other ones set up by Vearn. When Dai and Popp drags the puppet's body into the sky to prevent the explosion, Maam went forward and succeed in killing Killvearn. Dai later sacrificed himself into getting involved in the puppet's explosion, much to Maam and the others' horror of seeing it.
Following Dai's sacrifice, he and the others were searching for him for weeks, but couldn't find him anywhere. While mourning for him as they stared at the Sword of Dai, they were surprised to realized that Dai may come back since he's still alive. The epilogue shows the world has been greatly improved because of Dai's actions, and everyone, especially Leona, are waiting for him to return.
Powers and Abilities[]
From the beginning, Dai is shown to be a prodigious fighter, having a strong natural aptitude for combat, especially swordsmanship. Dai is already introduced to have above-average human abilities, like honed senses, immense willpower, and keen intellect as he fights the Fake Heroes during the first battle. He requires his assistance from his monster friends through his monster capsules to even the odds. Despite learning a few spells, Dai is rather clumsy in casting them at first and is more proficent in swordplay. However, Leona says that it is already an achievement in of itself for him to be able to do that much, implying a hidden talent within him.
His Dragon Knight heritage gives Dai special powers that have been dormant in him for most of his life, and can be brought out under intense emotions like anger or focus. Every time he does so, the Dragon Crest will glow on his forehead, increasing his powers greatly and even allowing him to cast spells effortlessly. However, initially after this, he is unable to remember the process, although this changes once he is used to it and hones his spells.
When Baran dies, he passes his Dragon Crest to Dai, boosting the boy's power more than ever before, speculated to be of around 140%, and inheriting all memories and experiences of the past Dragon Knights. Now whenever he uses this power, the crests will glow on his hands instead. By merging them on his forehead, Dai is able to reach a form similar to his father's Dragonoid form, with his power boost speculated to be of 200%.
Trivia[]
- Both of his names, Dai and Dino, are derived from the word "dinosaur". According to author Riku Sanjo, this was because he wanted to use the name of the dragon as the leading role.
- Dai, along with Jotaro Kujo and DIO were planned to be playable characters in J-Stars Victory Vs but their gamefiles remained unfinished. However, they eventually became playable characters in Jump Force.
- Although it is stated that Dai can't read the Book of Avan, he has been shown to be able to write and read the Fake Heroes' weaknesses when interrogating Zurbon, and read and sign the contract of Avan's training course, implying that he can read, but not the alphabet (kanji) one that was used in that book while Nova and Leona could.
