“ | It's strange. I can't remember what real silence is like anymore. My mom is always complaining about me being too loud. She'll be so surprised when we get back... Might not even recognize me anymore. | „ |
~ Daisuke in the Mouthwashing teaser, hoping to make it back home. |
Daisuke (ダイスケ) is one of the two tritagonists (alongside Anya) of the 2024 psychological horror game Mouthwashing, developed by Swedish developer Wrong Organ.
He was a chippy, optimistic, yet somewhat incompetent young intern working aboard the Tulpar freighter under its mechanic, Swansea, until the ship — a large vessel carrying cargo across the system for Pony Express — was steered into an asteroid by the original co-pilot, Jimmy, intentionally marooning the crew and plunging them into chaos before pinning the blame on the captain, Curly. Although Daisuke often tried his best to help Swansea and the crew, he lacked the necessary knowledge, much to Swansea's exasperation. Eventually, Daisuke attempted to save Anya and Curly from the medical room, under the mistaken belief that Anya was going to euthanize Curly. Instead, Anya killed herself, and Daisuke was fatally injured as a result of trying to enter the room through a vent. Swansea, who had been salvaging the last remaining cryopod to save Daisuke, ultimately puts him out of his misery with an axe to the face.
His gasps of pain and panic were provided by Martin, who also provided the voice of Curly.
Appearance[]
Daisuke is a tall young man with a tanned complexion, semi-dyed brown hair, and almond-shaped brown eyes. He has a round face, with a mole on each cheek. His outfit consists of a yellow and red Pony Express ringer tee, a pink hibiscus-patterned button-up shirt, blue jeans, and black boots.
Personality[]
Daisuke is easily the most optimistic crew member aboard the ship. He is almost always enthusiastic and excited about things happening around the ship, even after the crash: the mentee seems to have felt like he was doing his part just with the menial task of taking stock of the kitchen four times over, as ordered by an exasperated Swansea. However, he is often incompetent, struggling to perform tasks correctly. As a result, he often looks to authority figures like Swansea or Jimmy for assistance, and tries to follow the rules whenever possible.
However, despite his peppy exterior, Daisuke later in the game drunkenly confesses to Jimmy that he struggles to find meaning in life, feeling as though he is a disappointment for struggling to do things right.
Biography[]
Only a few clues are given about Daisuke's background in the game. In Chapter 8, Daisuke mentions that his mother arranged his internship at Tulpar, quoting her remark: “Such a slacker, she said,” in reference to his lack of career direction—college wasn’t even mentioned. His comments imply that he spent most of his time partying and drinking instead. Jimmy also hints that Daisuke might come from a wealthy family, as "mommy and daddy" would have him covered, though he is an unreliable narrator, so this is left ambiguous.
