Biography[]
The New age of heroes[]
The United States Army arrived in Atlanta for Ethan's transformation. He had joined to be a soldier, but the metamorphosis into his alter-ego, Damage, was overwhelming. He burst from the military aircraft, causing destruction in his wake. As Damage wreaked havoc, he heard Ethan's voice urging him to be a hero, not a monster. Just then, Major Liggett fired at him, fueled by jealousy over Ethan's powers. Colonel Marie Jonas ordered the troops to abort the mission. In a confrontation, Damage overpowered Liggett but hesitated to kill him, choosing instead to spare his life. With that decision, Ethan escaped to hide from the Army, determined not to harm any civilians. Moments later, Damage transformed back, leaving Ethan unconscious on the ground.
Ethan woke up in a bed at a homeless shelter, wearing a donated shirt. Damage was still in his mind, reminding him of Colonel Marie Jonas’s lies about being a hero. Yelling at Damage, he drew the attention of a man who helped him. Ethan introduced himself as Dave Everest. Lost in the city, Ethan borrowed a woman’s phone to call his parents, realizing they’d be in danger if he went home. After returning the phone, the woman offered him coffee and some change, which he used to buy a hamburger. While eating, Deadshot warned him about Parasite. As Parasite attacked, attempting to drain him, Ethan struggled to contain Damage within. Wonder Woman arrived and took down Parasite, believing she was helping. However, Damage attacked her. Ethan urged him to stand down, but Damage punched her and chased after her instead. Wonder Woman used her Lasso of Truth, revealing that Damage was still human.
On the run from the U.S. Army and unable to return home, Ethan hid in a truck to rest. He dreamt of his transformation, awakening in fear. Just as he was about to leave, Jorge Hernandez offered him a ride and a job. Weeks later, Ethan enjoyed some peace, but soon felt Damage stirring in his mind. Seeking help from Poison Ivy, he got caught in her vines and fainted during his transformation back to Ethan. Rescued by Jose, he hid in a sewer until he regained strength and returned to confront Ivy. Damage took over, wanting to work together, but Ivy was brainwashed by Gorilla Grodd. Damage fought his gorilla army and faced Grodd, who revealed Ethan's humanity. Realizing Ivy was the key, Damage asked her for help. With Ivy’s assistance, they defeated Grodd, but Ethan stopped Damage from finishing him off. Afterward, Ivy thanked Damage for saving her and put him to sleep in the forest. The next morning, Ethan woke up to a sunrise and met Swamp Thing, who encouraged him to use his powers for good, reminding him he wasn't a monster.
Ethan took a boat in South St. Louis when the U.S. Army located him and attempted to take him into custody. Damage emerged, attacking the agents and damaging the boat, forcing Ethan to swim to shore. In the hospital, the Unknown Soldier warned him that they were coming for him and helped Ethan escape. As they fled, Damage took control and confronted Colonel Marie Jonas and her troops. With the Unknown Soldier's assistance, Ethan fought them off. When only Jonas remained, she taunted him, expecting death, but he spared her, warning her to leave him alone. Afterward, Ethan thanked the Unknown Soldier for his help as they parted ways.
Ethan accessed the data from the base and learned about the horrific test subjects. As the data began to self-destruct, Damage broke into the lab, confronted by failed experiments inside tubes. He urged to destroy the lab to prevent its use on innocent people. The Justice League arrived to stop him, and a battle ensued. Ethan fought valiantly until Superman arrived for a one-on-one showdown. Batman and Deadman soon joined for backup. While inside Damage, Deadman discovered another presence within him. After a fierce struggle, Ethan transformed back to his original self and headed for the Hall of Justice.
Damage labeled Ethan as weak after he was taken by the Justice League. He awoke to find himself locked up, and Batman checked on him, explaining that he had learned about Ethan's ability to control monsters, which made him dangerous after wreaking havoc across the country. Batman revealed that they had been in a holographic environment aboard the Batmobile all along. As Batman opened the cell, Damage emerged and began fighting him. Despite several rounds, Ethan sensed that something was off; it felt like a setup. They soon landed on Monster Island, where Ethan saw a giant monster and urged everyone to run.
During Ethan's training on Monster Rock, he and William were ambushed by Shaggy Man and Oggoro, who captured them and dangled them above a lava pool. In a desperate moment, Ethan transformed into Damage, gaining the strength needed to save William and buy time to transfer his mind back to Congorilla. Together, they fought back against the mutants, ultimately overpowering Shaggy Man and Oggoro. After the battle, William demanded that the defeated foes leave the island in exchange for their lives. This experience helped Ethan understand the true nature of being a monster, not just about power, but about standing up for others and defining his own identity despite the challenges he faced.
