Darius Baer-Varbrun is a minor character in the manga and anime, Attack on Titan. He was a team leader in the Survey Corps where he had a small contingent of soldiers under his command. He partook in the 57th expedition outside the Walls where he and his team tried to fight off the Female Titan but were all subsequently killed.
Appearance[]
Darius Baer-Varbrun was man of above average height. He had tanned skin with dark colored eyes. He also had dark hair that slicked to the back of his head, with long and sharp sideburns. He used to wear the standard Survey Corps uniform with a blue greyish shirt underneath, along with a green cape.
Personality[]
Darius seemed to be a smart and stern man. Coming up with a specific strategy to take down the Female Titan instead of fighting her head on, while also innovatively using his flare gun as a tool to distract her. He overall appeared as a firm, serious and considerate leader, as he was thoughtful of the feelings for the young trainees after Erwin Smith was intimidating them to much during the ceremony.

Background[]
Darius Baer-Varbrun was born on September 29th in an unknown year, somewhere inside what is assumed to be Wall Rose. At some point in his youth, Darius joined the military and would presumably spend most of his time in an unknown branch until he eventually joined the Survey Corps. It is expected that Darius partook in numerous expeditions in the Titan infested Wall Maria, with him going upwards in the ranks, earning the title of Team Leader, having at least 3 soldiers under his command. It is unknown who Darius’ Squad Leader was, however.
Eve of the Counterattack arc[]
During the Survey Corps appliance ceremony, Erwin Smith explains to the trainees about the Survey Corps’s future goal, while Darius and other Survey Corps soldiers watch Erwin’s speech from the sidelines. Suddenly, Erwin begins talking about the dangerous fate awaiting the future Survey Corps soldier, that in the last 4 years, 60% have died and that the death rate will only go up. The speech is ended by Erwin asking the trainees if they have what it takes to put everything on the line for humanity, and that the people who wish to leave can go. Darius walks up to Erwin and states that Erwin probably intimidated the trainees to much, unaware of Erwin’s true motives.
Female Titan arc[]
During the next day, Darius is ready to depart together with all the other Survey Corps soldiers for the 57th expedition. Darius motivates the new recruits by proclaiming that humanity will take another step forward. Darius then departs with his fellow comrades.
Darius and his Team would be placed in the right flank relay squad which was close to the center of the Survey Corps’ formation.
Team Darius kept moving forward, until they heard of information that a mysterious Female-Type Titan has been exterminating the right flank and has started approaching the center of the formation. It got to the point until the Female Titan approached Darius and his Team, but he came up with a plan to take her down. Darius acts as bait for the Titan while he placed his soldiers in different parts of a remote town. He shoots signal flares at the Titan in order to distract it, when the Titan is successfully caught off guard for a moment, he then yells for his soldiers to attack her simultaneously, with each soldier trying to incapacitate the Titan. One going for her spine and the other two for her tendons, all in order to at the very least slow her down. The soldiers daringly launch at the Titan but are all caught off guard when the Female Titan suddenly jumps, staggering their attacks. The Titan crushes one of soldier underfoot and when the other one near her feat tries to escape, he is also killed by being kicked against a building. The remaining soldier’s wire is caught, making him unable to flee. Darius watches in horror as he sees his remaining comrade being brutally toyed with, The Female Titan having begun spinning the man’s wire causing his body to be bent in half from the extreme inertia. Darius rushes out of the town, stating to himself that he has to give a report to the rest of the formation, but he is shocked when sees the Female Titan rushing towards him. The Titan forcefully kicks both him and his horse, killing them both straightaway while their corpses fly up in the air.
Trivia[]
- Altough never implicitly stated, considering the fact that Darius was unaware of Erwin's true intentions regarding his speech towards the trainees, together with his inability to understand the possibility of the Female Titan being a Titan Shifter, gives the idea that Darius isn't one of the senior Survey Corps soldiers who was in the branch for over 5 years. But because Darius is clearly an older man, he was presumably in a different branch and switched after the fall of Wall Maria.
