Personality[]
He's mild-mannered, and usually easy-going, eventually figuring out that he has hidden anger inside of him from people always taking advantage of him all the time.
His repressed emotions caused him to cling on to awful events, even decades later. When he a boy, he almost had his first kiss with popular girl Sara, but was pantsed by his bully, Arnie, revealing his relatively small penis to her and the neighborhood. He didn't vent any anger, rather was crushed by the humiliation, retreating into himself; because of this, he was unable to kiss or display any physical affection in public, becoming uncomfortable even when a man. Another factor of his childhood embarrassment is that he is prone to insecurity and jealousy, such as fearing his girlfriend Linda would be seduced by Andrew, despite the fact that he trusted her.
He knows when people take advantage of him, yet accepts it, stifling his emotions, causing him to develop what, as Buddy Rydell labelled, "implosive rage", hence why Buddy's program involved continuous provocation and irritation to make Dave burst, yet in a controlled environment made by Buddy, rather than any random situation in which he would be capable of actually hurting people.
While Buddy planned the anger management, it had some occasional breaching of limits, such as when Dave confronted his childhood bully, Arnie Shankman, now a Buddhist monk; upon Arnie's lack of repentance in humiliating Dave by exposing his genitals, Buddy injected a few cutting remarks, which Dave picked up and exaggerated, even claiming he molested Arnie's sister, thus showing how deep his resentment was and how his anger made him capable of uncharacteristic cruelty.
Upon his emotional breakdown due to Buddy's deception of him now dating Linda, plus his belief that he would be shortly in prison, Dave lost any restraint or fear about expressing his emotion, with him being able to finally stand up to his manipulative boss, if rather aggressively, and condemn Andrew for continuing to linger around Linda out of a desire to be the rebound.
Dave felt betrayed by Buddy since they did develop an eccentric friendship; yet despite his prior jealousy, he wasn't angry at Linda, merely finally admitting that she was right about his issues, yet he had grown and wants to give her the life she had been asking for from him. To prove his dedication, Dave kissed her in the middle of a full Yankee Stadium, thus he overcame his fear about public displays of affection.
When Dave learned that Buddy never betrayed him, but everything had been carefully designed to reach a version of him breaking through his fear and anger repression problems, he was surprised and quite impressed. Rather than mad about the struggles, Dave was grateful for Buddy's help, despite its unorthodox and bumpy road.
