Ser Daven Lannister is a minor character in the A Song of Ice and Fire novel series. He is a knight of House Lannister and the current Warden of the West.
Daven is the only son of Ser Stafford Lannister and Myranda Lefford, and a cousin and nephew-in-law of Lord Tywin Lannister. He is the older brother of Cerenna and Myrielle Lannister. Daven is also a cousin of Cersei Lannister, Ser Jaime Lannister, and Tyrion Lannister, as well as a half-cousin to Ser Damion Lannister.
Appearance[]
Daven has lively hazel eyes, a pug nose, long thick and tangled yellow hair, and a big chin covered by a huge mane of a beard. In battle and war, he wears gilded ringmail, a helm, and a fox-fur cloak.
Personality[]
“ | Jaime: I hope you do not intend to take vows as well, coz. The Freys are prickly where marriage contracts are concerned. I would hate to disappoint them again. Daven: I'll wed and bed my stoat, never fear. I know what happened to Robb Stark. |

~ Daven and Jaime, regarding the former's betrothal to a Frey girl. |
Daven Lannister is blunt and outspoken, but is also jovial and vengeful. He is held in high esteem by Ser Jaime Lannister and Ser Brynden Tully, unlike with Stafford, who is looked down on as a poor and unintelligent commander.
Biography[]
Nothing is known about Daven's early life. Stafford Lannister seeks to betroth his son to Desmera Redwyne, the youngest daughter of Lord Paxter Redwyne, the Lord of the Arbor and commander of the mighty and powerful Redwyne fleet. However, an agreement has not been reached with Lord Paxter.
Recent History[]
A Game of Thrones[]
When war against House Tully broke out in the Riverlands, Ser Daven Lannister offers to lead the foraging of the Lannister host but was refused by Lord Tywin Lannister, who explains that some tasks are fit for lions while others are better left to goats and dogs. The latter is a reference to Vargo Hoat, the brutal leader of the Brave Companions, and Ser Gregor Clegane, the Knight of Clegane's Keep and head of House Clegane. Along with Ser Amory Lorch, they become the leaders of the foraging parties.
A Clash of Kings[]
During the Battle of Oxcross, when King Robb Stark, the King in the North, and his army launched a night attack on Ser Stafford Lannister's camp at Oxcross, Stafford himself was killed by Lord Rickard Karstark. Because the Lannister defeat was so great, it was rumored that Robb had cut out Stafford's heart before feeding it to his direwolf Grey Wind, which was dismissed as 'ridiculous' by Robb's mother, Lady Catelyn Stark. Ever since then, Ser Daven Lannister vows to let his hair grow until he avenged his father's death.
A Storm of Swords[]
At the small council, Lord Tywin Lannister informs that Daven is rounding up a new army and is gathering Stafford's remaining and surviving soldiers at Lannisport. In addition, he will then join with men from the Golden Tooth and then march on Riverrun, the ancestral seat of House Tully, when King Robb Stark returns to the North, due to his already-failing cause and the capture of Winterfell by Theon Greyjoy. The small council agree as one that Robb will march for Moat Cailin, which is being held by the ironborn.
When Robb executes Rickard Karstark at Riverrun, for his murder of Willem Lannister and Tion Frey, this robs Daven Lannister of his chance at getting revenge on Rickard, the man who killed his father. Though his vow of vengeance is now obsolete, Daven, nevertheless, continues to let his hair grow.
Concerning Robb Stark betraying House Frey, due to him breaking his marriage pact by marrying Jeyne Westerling, Ser Daven is set to marry a Frey to consolidate the newly-formed alliance between House Lannister and House Frey, as a part of the pact between Tywin and Lord Walder Frey.
Following the Red Wedding, where Robb, his mother Catelyn and his men were betrayed and most of them dishonorably killed while under Guest Right, Daven Lannister joins forces with Ser Forley Prester at the Golden Tooth and meets up with Ser Ryman Frey's host to besiege Riverrun.
A Feast for Crows[]
Daven's hair is now long and shaggy and his mustache has become bushy. His sidewhiskers are as thick as a hedgerow and he has a bristling beard.
When Cersei Lannister assumes her regency, she wants her uncle, Ser Kevan Lannister, to succeed her father, Tywin, as Hand of the King, but Kevan refuses and insisted that he will only take the position if he takes up the regency in her place and she will remove herself to Casterly Rock, the ancestral seat of House Lannister. However, an infuriated Cersei refused and, out of spite, she appoints Ser Daven Lannister as Warden of the West, which her uncle is better suited for. Though Kevan was angered by this, he didn't bear any ill will towards Daven as he knew that the latter never asked for the title.
Under Cersei's command, Ser Daven lays siege to Riverrun, which is still being held by Ser Brynden Tully or the "Blackfish", who still holds a sizable garrison. For the Iron Throne forces, their siege proved to be difficult as Ser Brynden had taken all the food and provisions he can find and brought them to Riverrun so that the Lannisters cannot live off the land. While the besiegers quarrel with each other, House Frey only took food for themselves and they didn't provide any help to their allies. Though Daven dislikes the Freys, except for Ser Perwyn Frey, he still intends to wed one, as he knew of the Red Wedding and the death of Robb Stark. In addition, a part of the royal forces consists of Riverlords who had surrendered to the Iron Throne. Despite being accepted back into the king's peace, they are less enthusiastic of fighting their former allies.
Though Daven wants to storm Riverrun, he is unable to persuade his commanders, especially Lord Emmon Frey, who objects any assaults on the castle. When Ser Jaime Lannister, the Lord Commander of the Kingsguard, arrived to take command, Daven, who now dislikes the task given to him by Cersei, is happy and pleased to be relieved of his objective. Jaime notes to him that he looks like a lion with all his hair, which Davens says it keeps him warm at night. When he discovers Vargo Hoat's responsibility for Jaime's missing right hand, he spits in response and jokes about it before happily telling him of the troubles of the siege of Riverrun. Daven then expressed shock when Jaime reveals to him of their cousin Lancel's decision to forsake all of his titles (including his status as Lord of Darry) and join the Faith Militant as a member of the Warrior's Sons. Daven then talks with Jaime in front of some of their pages about the true loyalty of House Tully's bannermen, who are not in the mood to provide much help to the Lannister and Frey forces, despite having bent the knee to the Iron Throne. During the war council, Daven openly states that Ser Ryman Frey is not sick but drunk. Though Jaime Lannister is successful in negotiating Riverrun's surrender, Lord Edmure Tully allowed Brynden the Blackfish to escape, to Jaime's displeasure.
