~ David to Javi. (determinant) |
David García is a main character and antagonist from the Telltale Games video game The Walking Dead: A New Frontier. He is the older brother of Javier García and founder of The New Frontier.
Prior to the zombie outbreak, he was a Staff Sergeant in the United States Army, but eventually settled down and retired after marrying his wife Kate and having two kids with her: Gabe and Marianna. When the outbreak occurred, David was separated from his family and presumed dead for many years.
During these years, he and other survivors formed The New Frontier, alongside Joan and Clint. David was tasked with being head of security for the group and formed friendships with the aforementioned Joan and Clint, Dr Paul Lingard, and several of their agents including Badger, Lonnie, Max, and Rufus. Several years later, David would meet his family again after they appear at the gates of Richmond, the primary location for the group, begging to be let in for Kate to receive medical treatment for a gunshot wound.
He was voiced by Alex Hernandez, who also portrayed Lincoln Clay in Mafia III.
Biography[]
Pre-Apocalypse[]
David lived with his second wife, two children, and had a brother named Javier, an uncle named Hector, as well as his parents. Unfortunately, his father Salvador passed away due to cancer at the onset of the apocalypse. According to Kate, David displayed some abusive behavior during their marriage.
David had a military background, having served as a Staff Sergeant in the US Army, as evident from his wedding photo with Kate. When he retired, his commanding officer gifted him a special glass before passing away.
After Javier faced a ban from baseball due to gambling, David allowed him to stay in his home. One evening, David discovered Kate with Javier, and his prized army glass was shattered. This led to a heated argument between David and Kate, with Javier either staying passive or taking the blame. In the latter case, David learned of Kate's supposed plan to run away with Javier or Javier breaking the glass (depending on choices made), leading him to insist that Javier find another place to live.
As the outbreak unfolded, David's father passed away at home, surrounded by his entire family, except for Javier, who arrived later while Hector and Gabriel were consoling Salvador's widow.
After their father's death, David encountered Javier outside their house and was consumed by anger. He physically assaulted his brother, reprimanding him for not being present when their father specifically called for Javier, even though David had been right there, holding their father's hand. As David prepared to continue the beating, Gabe intervened, momentarily halting the confrontation, allowing David to return to his beer.
Shortly after, David received surprising news that their father was now awake. Puzzled, he followed everyone upstairs to find Salvador in his bedroom. Hector, after keeping Mariana away, approached Salvador, only to be attacked by their reanimated father.
In an attempt to constrain Salvador, Javier and David struggled with him. Salvador's wife entered the room. David informed her that Salvador had suddenly attacked. Mrs. García tried to console her husband but was bitten during the process. In shock, she retreated into the arms of Javier and Kate, witnessing Salvador's assault on David. In response, Javier broke a piece of Salvador's bed frame and struck Salvador with it, while the children screamed in terror.
David then escorted Mrs. García to Salvador's car and drove her to the hospital, where she likely succumbed to the infection, leaving David on his own. Off-screen, David's mother reanimated as a walker and attacked him. Not much else is known about the incident that occurred on the way to the hospital, but David would end up on his way. At some point, he crossed paths with Ava, and together, they joined a community in Washington, D.C., where he later met Joan and Clint. However, their community was short-lived, and eventually, David, along with Joan, Clint, and Paul Lingard, established the New Frontier.
Ties That Bind - Part 2[]
David makes his first appearance in a flashback during Javier's stay at his home. In this memory, Kate accidentally shatters the special glass that had been gifted to David by his commanding officer. This incident sparks a heated argument between David and Kate, during which he also directs derogatory remarks at Javier, expressing dissatisfaction with how he's being perceived. Depending on the player's choices, Javier can either choose to defend Kate or reveal her plan to leave David. In the latter case, David reacts with anger, demanding that Javier vacate the house within three days.
In the concluding moments of the episode, it is unveiled that David holds a leadership position within the New Frontier. As he exits their compound, he utters the words, "Oh, my God," upon encountering his younger brother, his son, and his injured wife face to face.
Above The Law[]
David is initially shocked and amazed to encounter his family, whom he had believed to be dead. His primary concern is for Kate, and he hurriedly inquires about her condition from Javier. During this exchange, Javier informs David that their "buddy" Max instructed him and his group to surrender their weapons. Without any hesitation, David proceeds to take Kate, accompanied by Gabe, to Richmond's Clinic. Meanwhile, Tripp, Javier, Jesus, Conrad (depending on choices), and Clementine (depending on choices) are escorted by the New Frontier to the quarantine zone.
Following this, David and Javier embark on an exploration of their base, with the objective of reaching Kate. In the midst of this journey, Javier reveals the circumstances surrounding Mariana's demise and how it transpired under the New Frontier's influence. He advises Javier to keep this information to himself, as David intends to address the leader himself.
In a meeting at the church, Max is brought in by Clint to share his observations of Javier's actions outside of Richmond with the leaders. Max approaches this task with caution, recognizing the familial connection between David and Javier and aiming to show respect to David. Max details how he caught Javier "stealing" gas from their group, despite Javier's counterclaims. Max remains steadfast in justifying his actions. Furthermore, Max discloses additional information about Javier's encounter with Rufus, suggesting that Javier either killed him or allowed him to escape.
In response to Max's claims, Clint opposes the idea of permitting Javier to remain in Richmond. Javier has several options to respond:
Silence: Javier complies with David's wishes to keep Mariana's fate a secret, ensuring that no harm comes to David's position. He abstains from defending himself against Max's accusations.
Your people killed my niece: Javier defends himself by demanding justice and revealing the key information that Max omitted. He discloses that Badger was responsible for Mariana's death, which shocks Max. David is upset that Javier disclosed this without consulting him first, but Javier argues that he needed to address the unfair accusations. Additionally, Javier may mention that Badger and Max were involved in the destruction of Prescott, including the flooding with walkers and tear gas, and the unnecessary killing of Francine. Max attempts to distance himself from the violence, placing the blame squarely on Badger.
As a result of these proceedings, Javier is expelled from Richmond. However, David shares his plan with Javier and Ava, providing them with a prepared bag. Javier and his group then follow a map to a warehouse, where they encounter Clementine. Clementine recounts her association with the New Frontier, detailing her efforts to secure medicine for Alvin Jr., which ultimately led to her exile.
Upon entering the warehouse, they are greeted by Max, Badger, and Lonnie, who are in the midst of transferring stolen supplies. A confrontation ensues, during which Javier pursues Badger, David confronts Max, and Lonnie manages to escape. After Javier defeats Badger, a firefight erupts between David and Max. Ultimately, David overpowers Max, compelling him to divulge the truth. Max reveals that Joan was the mastermind behind the mass raids and violence. Although he initially wished to involve David in their operations, Joan rejected this idea. Max expresses remorse for his actions and pleads with David for clemency, promising to assist in exposing Joan to the council. Javier or David must make a decision regarding Max's fate:
Execute Him: In this cold-hearted choice, Javier ruthlessly shoots Max, who pleads for his life in his final moments.
Spare Him: Max expresses gratitude for being spared, and David incapacitates him. David acknowledges Javier's choice, indicating that it was necessary.
Do Nothing: David takes matters into his own hands, shooting Max point-blank in the head after determining that Max does not deserve to live.
If Max is spared, he accompanies the group back to Richmond and stands with them during discussions of their plan. After the group disperses, Max goes with David. Max fulfills his promise and exposes Joan to the council, revealing her as the mastermind behind the raids. However, Joan persuades the council that her actions were justified, leading them to side with her and subsequently imprison Javier and David.
If Max is killed, Lonnie reports to Joan and Clint that Javier and David murdered Max and Badger. Lonnie's accusations gain credibility when he attributes the raids on communities to David, rather than Joan. This incites David to angrily assault Lonnie, resulting in a shootout that claims Lonnie's life.
Thicker Than Water[]
In a flashback scene, Javier and David are at a park engaged in a baseball practice session. They discuss Javier's recent ban from baseball and David's decision to depart from the family. Suddenly, a child approaches Javier, requesting his autograph on a baseball. Javier has the choice to either agree or decline the request. After the child leaves, they complete their practice. David then asks Javier if he can look after their family once he leaves to join the military.
If Javier agrees, David expresses gratitude and appreciates his brother's support. They decide to leave, and David offers to buy Javier a beer. However, if Javier disagrees and asserts that it's his own responsibility, David becomes angered, accusing him of not understanding the importance of family. In his frustration, David storms off, leaving the park without Javier.
Returning to the present, David and Javier find themselves imprisoned in the New Frontier's jail cell. If Rufus was spared in the previous episode, he is seen placing Javier and David in the quarantine room. Javier implores Rufus for assistance, but Rufus sarcastically remarks that the only help they'll receive is not being shot. David attempts to persuade them that Joan is making a mistake, but one of the Raiders informs David that it was his mistake for trying to attack her or for potentially killing Lonnie, depending on previous choices.
Clint intervenes, calming the situation and explaining that Joan seeks order. He escorts the guards out of the room.
If Javier chose to try to leave with Kate earlier, David becomes furious and may engage in a brief altercation with Javier, accusing him of prioritizing Kate over their family and straining their relationship. However, if Javier adhered to David's plan, they reaffirm their close bond. Joan arrives, requesting to speak with David regarding some issues, and she takes him away. Javier attempts to follow but is locked out. With the assistance of Gabe or Kate, Javier manages to escape the cells.
David is brought forward for a public execution by Joan, who accuses him of various 'crimes.' The bodies of Badger, Max (depending on previous choices), Lonnie (depending on previous choices), and Paul Lingard (depending on previous choices) are displayed as evidence of his alleged wrongdoing.
Following their capture by the New Frontier, Joan forces Javier to make a harrowing choice between Ava and Tripp, sparing one while condemning the other to death. After David witnesses Joan's order for the execution of either Ava or Tripp, Clint attempts to resolve the conflict between Javier's group and Joan peacefully. Enraged by this, David urges Javier to kill Joan before he can. Javier must then make a critical decision:
If Javier Shoots Joan: Javier shoots Joan in the eye, instantly killing her and causing panic in the crowd, leading to dispersal. During the chaos, a member of the New Frontier kicks the chair from beneath David, who starts to suffocate. Javier and Gabe rush to the stage, with Gabe holding David by his legs while Javier cuts the rope, narrowly saving David's life. They then pull David to safety and spot Clint attempting to flee, prompting them to give chase, joined by Ava (depending on choices) and possibly Gabriel (depending on choices).
If Javier Accepts The Deal: Javier agrees to Clint's proposal. Clint proceeds to untie David, who ultimately goes against the agreement. David disarms a New Frontier member and takes Clint hostage. A struggle ensues over the gun, resulting in it firing and causing panic in the square. Gabe and Javier make their way to the stage, where Gabe attempts to pull Clint away from David. This distraction allows David to regain control of the gun and shoot Clint in the head, killing him instantly. After taking cover from incoming gunfire, David notices Joan attempting to escape amid the chaos and angrily gives chase, along with Ava (depending on choices) and potentially Gabriel (depending on choices).
From The Gallows[]
David makes his first appearance in a flashback alongside Javier and their father, Salvador Garcia, where they discuss his cancer diagnosis during a game of Dominos. David, upon learning this revelation, storms off frustrated at Savador for hiding this information. Salavador asks Javi to look out for his brother and love him no matter what. Javi can choose whether or not to promise. In the present day, Javier encounters David in the town square, where he is still engaged in a conflict with the New Frontier. After the others are located and have taken refuge in a nearby building, Gabe confronts David, expressing anger over David's actions, particularly his killing of Clint. Later, David, Gabe, and Clementine venture to check the exits. Subsequently, the group reunites in a room with Eleanor, Fern, and Rufus (depending on previous choices).
Despite previous interactions, David antagonizes Javier and eventually confronts him about Kate's feelings, even if Javier has rejected her advances throughout the season. This confrontation leads to a physical altercation, during which David attacks Javier. The outcome of the fight depends on Javier's response: he can either fight back, resulting in a brawl that concludes with David choking him nearly to death with a wrench, breaking his promise to their father, or he can refuse to fight back, repeatedly expressing love for his brother as David continues to beat him, keeping his promise to their father. Regardless of Javier's actions, Clementine intervenes by either shooting David in the shoulder or pointing her gun at his head to force him to release Javier.
David's ultimate fate hinges on the choices made by Clementine and Javier:
Clementine and Javier stay with Kate (David is dead): After the events in Richmond, Javier and Clementine set out to locate David and Gabe but discover David's reanimated body, which Gabe had to put down.
Clementine goes after David and Gabe while Javier stays with Kate (David is dead): Clementine successfully brings Gabe back to Javier and Kate but informs them that Gabe had to kill David after he turned into a walker. Javier and Kate later find David's body and mourn him. They bury him with his dog tags, as per David's wishes, and Kate leaves her wedding ring on his grave.
Clementine stays with Kate while Javier goes after David and Gabe (David is dead): In this scenario, Javier rescues Gabe, but David sustains a fatal walker bite to the neck. After an emotional farewell and recollection of their father's words, Gabe puts down David to prevent reanimation, whether Javier offers to do it himself or not.
Clementine and Javier go after David and Gabe but don't ask him to return (David's fate is unknown): David and Gabe are saved by Javier and Clementine, but David chooses to leave without speaking to Javier or Gabe. His whereabouts become unknown.
Clementine and Javier go after David and Gabe and ask him to come back (David is alive): If David is asked to return, he does so, but he has been unable to communicate with Javier or Gabe since Kate's death.
Personality[]
David is depicted as a passionate yet impulsive individual whose quick decisions can sometimes lead to unintended consequences. Before the outbreak, he served in the military, a period in his life when he felt he had a more significant purpose, causing him to contemplate leaving his family. His relationship with his family, particularly his wife Kate, was often fraught with tension.
Following the outbreak, David became separated from his family and eventually joined the New Frontier. The reunion with his loved ones brought mixed emotions, with the news of Mariana's death weighing heavily on him. Within the New Frontier, he held a position as one of the four leaders and initially aimed to assist Javi's group. However, his confrontation with Joan over her ordered attacks on innocent settlements led to him losing his leadership role, which greatly infuriated him.
Over time, David's behavior took a darker turn, making him increasingly hostile and feared among the group. His impulsive actions, such as killing Clint when they were allowed to leave and injuring Fern, drew criticism from others. David was not oblivious to the change in how people viewed him and confided in Javi about the matter.
David's relationship with Javi was characterized by frequent disagreements and physical altercations, as shown in flashbacks. When Javi returned after their father's death, David's anger towards him erupted into a fight. Despite the conflict, David still cared for Javi. However, he was unaware that during his absence, Javi and Kate had grown very close, potentially developing a romantic relationship. When this became known to David, he reacted violently, attacking Javi. Javi had the choice to respond with aggression or express love to his brother, fulfilling a promise he had made to their father to watch over David.
Additionally, David exhibited a selfish side when he decided to abandon Richmond during a walker invasion, believing it was not their problem. He left with Gabriel, a decision that could result in his death or eventual rescue by the group, potentially at the cost of Kate's life. If David survived and returned to Richmond, he distanced himself from Javi and Gabe due to Kate's death.
