Hero Overview

I'm gonna take you there myself, fly you to the moon. That's a promise!
~ David's vow to Lucy.
Whatever, choom. Like I give a s-it.
~ David to Adam Smasher, his last words.

David Martinez is the main protagonist of the 2022 Netflix anime series Cyberpunk: Edgerunners and one of the overarching protagonists of its 2020 sequal role-playing game Cyberpunk 2077.

He was a teenager who was once a top student in the Arasaka Academy, however he was ostracized and discriminated due to his status as a member of a poor family. As a result of the tragedies he faced, including the death of his mother at the hands of the mobs, David pursues himself to become an edgerunner.

He is voiced by Zach Aguilar (who also provided the voices of Aether from Genshin Impact, Genos from One-Punch Man, Otto Suwen from Re:Zero - Starting Life in Another World, Tanjiro Kamado from Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, and male Byleth from Fire Emblem: Three Houses) in the English version and by Kenichiro Ohashi (who also provided the voices of Jaden Yuki from Yu-Gi-Oh! GX, Parzival from the JP dub of Ready Player One, and Jinbei Tsukishima from Mushibugyo) in the Japanese version.

Personality[]

David cares deeply about those close to him, including his mother and later his crew. Whether its getting bootleg software to help his mother save money or saving people within his crew when they are endangered, he goes out of his way to help people with their troubles. Lucy falls for him for this very reason, stating that he's the type of person who'd go into a fire to rescue someone—anyone—even when he knows he's going to get burned.

History[]

David is a student of Arasaka Academy who is raised by a single mother and tormented by classist bullies. After he is hit with a personal tragedy, he finds and installs a Sandevistan that was in his home in Santo Domingo. This leads him to run into Lucy, a young netrunner who introduces him to the world of edgerunning and dreams of going to the moon. As the two start to find meaning in their lives in each other, they also find themselves having to carve their paths through the violence and depravity of Night City to stay together.

Biography[]

Background[]

David Martinez was born in 2058 to Gloria Martinez and an unnamed father, and grew up in an apartment amidst the streets of Santo Domingo. He was able to attend the prestigious Arasaka Academy due to his mother's work as an EMT and secretly selling cyberware to edgerunners. While there, David gained the enmity of his wealthier classmates, notably Katsuo Tanaka, and started to sell braindance (XBDs) from the ripperdoc known as "Doc".

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners[]

Gaining the ire of his classmates for selling outdated XBDs, David and his mother spoke with the principal about the situation. While returning home, the two were victims of attack by gang, resulting in Gloria being critically injured and David taking her to a back alley clinic. Returning home to find the funds to save his mother, he found that she obtained a military grade neuralware from a soldier who went cyberpsycho. Learning from Doc about worth, David intended to sell it on the black market, but learned that his mother had passed away. Once he received a call from Katsuo mocking his mother's death, David returned to Doc and demanded that he implanted the neuralware into him. The following day, he attacked attacked Tanaka and his friends at the academy, resulting in his expulsion.

The next day, David encountered a woman named Lucy stealing shards from others, and the two started to work together in stealing while boarding trains. At her apartment, she calls her colleagues Maine, Dorio and Pillar to interrogate Martinez, learning that his mother sold them cyberware from dead corpses, and decided to bring him in on a heist as his initiation.

Powers and Abilities[]

David starts the series with the standard neural interface as well as ocular implants that most people have. He's closer to full body conversion by the mid-point of the show: he has Cyber Eyes, the Sandevistan (in his spine), Maine's Cyberarms, jump-boosting Cyber Legs, a Ballistic Torso and muscle enhancements.

when he uses his sandevistan, his body gains a great speed, making everything slower for him, thus allowing him to avoid enemies, although, if david uses it for a long time, he will start to get pain and bleed, because the sandevistan does a high level of stress on your body, so it is better to only use it 2 to 3 times a day (and David uses it maximum 10 times).

Quotes[]

Like I give a s-it.
~ David's catchphrase.
Sorry, we can't go to the moon together.

Trivia[]

  • David doesn't like carbonated drinks.
  • Although later it is seen that he began to take it, it is possibly because David wanted to be able to take it together with Lucy to be closer to her.
  • In Cyberpunk 2077, a cocktail dedicated to him can be purchased in the Afterlife, honoring his legacy.
    • The cocktail is topped off with a carbonated drink, despite David not liking them.
  • David's one-in-a-million, high tolerance for cyberware is a result of a high Humanity stat and a supportive environment (such as a relatively secure life and loving associates) that buffered — to a point — the repercussions that lead to cyberpsychosis.
  • V (The protagonist of Cyberpunk 2077) get's David's jacket when they goes to his house, then Falco calls them and tells them about David and where to find his jacket, David's jacket is a legendary item.
