David Platt is a fictional character and central protagonist of the British soap opera Coronation Street.

He is a member of the Platt Family who was born on Christmas Day 1990, conceived by parents Martin and Gail Platt. Though he initially grew up to be a rebellious and wayward trickster who often caused trouble on various occasions, David eventually mellowed over the later years and has since then acted more heroically and responsibly for the sake of his family and loved ones in Weatherfield.

The character is portrayed by Jack P. Shepherd.

Biography

David Platt was born on Christmas Day 1990, conceived by parents Martin and Gail Platt. He is their youngest child and has two older siblings - half-brother Nick Tilsley and their sister Sarah Platt.

By 2000, David has grown up as a schoolboy with a sense of humour and charisma as well as proving to be a rebellious child at times. His family coped with Sarah's underage pregnancy that led to the birth of her daughter Bethany, thereby making David become a uncle at the age of 9-years-old. He was later upset when his parents split up following Martin's affair with his colleague Rebecca that led to him and Gail getting separated.

In 2001, David was shocked to see Gail seeing financial advisor Richard Hillman and became upset to the point of running out of the house. David eventually accepted that Gail's marriage with Martin was over and supported her new relationship with Richard. Over a year later Richard married Gail and became David's stepfather, and the couple attempted to support David when he had a hard time coping with secondary school. In February 2003, however, David was horrified when the family learned that Richard was a serial killer who tried to kill David's grandmother Audrey Roberts for her inheritance at one point. Richard later reappeared and kidnapped David along with his family before trying to kill them all by driving them into a canal; everyone but Richard survived in the end.

Although their ordeal with Richard was over at last, David became deeply impacted by Richard's actions and it drove him to become a wayward trickster whose list of antics became more and more volatile as the years went on. However, he soon became to reform and later tried to clear Gail's name after she was falsely imprisoned for murder. David seemed to be fully reformed after he married Kylie Turner and became a father figure to her son Max but he returned to his old self after learning she slept with Nick and started a hate campaign against his brother. This led to Nick being amnesiac and David being disowned by the family though they forgave him and he reconciled with Kylie in time.

David did his best to support and help Max when he was diagnosed with ADHD. Max's hyperactivity caused Kylie to get her ex boyfriend and Max's biological father Callum Logan to supply her with drugs. When Callum started to become involved in Max's life David tried to protect him from his influence. Ultimately Callum was killed by Kylie to protect David's sister Sarah.

When Kylie was murdered by Clayton Hibbs on the day the couple were due to leave Weatherfield for good, David became obsessed with revenge and planned to kill him by driving a petrol dosed car into the police van Clayton would be in. His family locked him in a cellar for his own protection but he tricked Gail into letting him go by faking suicide. He swerved to avoid hitting his daughter Lily which caused the car to flip over and land on top of Lily and David's former enemy Gary Windass who tried to get her to safety. Fortunately everyone was saved.

In 2017, David ended up dating Shona Ramsey who he later discovered was Clayton's mother but chose to forgive her.

After David was raped by Josh Tucker, he was devastated and tried to stop him from raping another man. Eventually David drove Josh into leaving the area. Josh's crimes were later discovered and he was arrested.

In 2022 David tried to stop Max from being groomed into racist beliefs by Griff Reynolds and his gang, but Max dismissed his warnings and the pair fell out on several occasions. Even after Max ended up in prison, David refused to give up on his son and tried to support and comfort him by visiting prison as often as possible.

• Jack P. Shepherd has received universal acclaim for his portrayal of David Platt and has ended up receiving as well as winning numerous awards for this, most notably in the 2018 British Soap Awards ceremony when he won the Best Actor category.
