NOTE: This article is about the incarnation of Dawn from the Pokémon the Series anime. The mainstream version can be found here: Dawn (Pokémon).
Heroine Overview

No need to worry!
~ Dawn's catchphrase.

Dawn (Japanese: ヒカリ Hikari) is a supporting character in the Pokémon anime series.

She is a Pokémon Coordinator and a former traveling companion of Ash Ketchum and Brock Her goal is to become a great Pokémon Coordinator just like her mother, Johanna, which is why she tries her best to win Pokémon contests. Her first Pokémon was a Piplup that she received from Professor Rowan in the first Pokémon the Series: Diamond and Pearl episode. She lives in Twinleaf Town.

She was voiced by Megumi Toyoguchi in the Japanese version (who previously voiced Princess Sara in the Ruby and Sapphire series) and by Emily Bauer in the English version (who later voices Yuzu Hiiragi and Rin, Celina and Lulu Obsidian and Ray Akaba in Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V).

Appearance[]

Dawn has blue hair and blue eyes (unlike her game counterpart, whose hair is grayish-blue). She wears a black V-neck tank top with a white shirt under it, a short pink mini skirt, and a red scarf. On her head, she wears a white beanie with a pink Poké Ball print on it. She also wears yellow hair clips that hold up her hair in front. On her feet, she wears pink knee-high boots with black socks underneath. She also wears a short pink scarf.

Formal clothes[]

Formal clothes are a key part of Dawn's wardrobe since she dresses up nicely for all her Pokémon Contests:

  • In her debut appearance, she was shown to be wearing three different formal outfits when imagining herself in Contests with each of the Sinnoh starters. In her Chimchar fantasy, she was seen wearing a red dress; and in the Turtwig fantasy she was wearing a lavender suit with a top hat; and in the Piplup fantasy, she was wearing a light green dress.

Swimwear[]

Like May in the Ruby and Sapphire series, Dawn is shown to wear different swimwear throughout her appearance in the anime:

  • In "Sandshrew's Locker!", "Hot Springing a Leak!" and "Up Close and Personable!", Dawn's swimwear is a yellow and orange bikini.
  • In Pokémon the Movie: Arceus and the Jewel of Life, Dawn wore a pink one-piece swimsuit with a short skirt around the waist in, along with some kind of white undershirt with horizontal black stripes on it.
  • In the ending "In Your Heart, LaLaLa", Dawn wore a light pink one-piece swimsuit with two white stripes at the bottom.
  • In the Black & White series, Dawn wore a two-piece swimsuit that consists of a light green top with vertical dark green stripes and a light green piece of cloth wrapped around her waist.

Other[]

  • Whenever she's sleeping, Dawn wears pink pajamas.
  • In "O'er the Rampardos we Watched", "A Triple Fighting Chance!" and "The Eighth Wonder of the Sinnoh World!", Dawn wore a pink cheerleading outfit. Her Pokémon all have similar outfits. The purpose of the outfit was to support Ash Ketchum in his Gym battles with Roark, Maylene and Volkner.
  • In "Tanks for the Memories!", Dawn wore a French maid's outfit to help out at the Café Cabin.
  • From "Battling a Cute Drama!" to "Pillars of Friendship!", Dawn wears a red winter jacket with a white scarf, white socks and pink winter boots.

Personality[]

Dawn grew very inspired by her mother's achievements from a very young age, and wants to become a Top Coordinator much like her. At the start of Pokémon the Series: Diamond & Pearl, following her debut, she started off as somewhat arrogant and overconfident, until she lost two contests in a row, after which she became depressed. It wasn't until she won the Wallace Cup that she regained her confidence, but instead of reverting back to what she was in the beginning of the series, she now became more mature, and took a more positive and determined personality.

Many aspects of her personality are also shared with Ash, which is why they are very close friends. Both started out as overconfident and somewhat immature, but later matured as their respective arcs progressed. Unlike Ash's previous female companions and, later, also Iris, Dawn does not argue with him as often. A sign of her confidence is that she tries to look toward the future rather than dwelling on the past, notable with her catchphrase "No need to worry!" ("Daijobu" in Japanese).

Initially, Dawn showed great concern about her appearance and she would usually sleep in a tent at the beginning of the series, unlike Ash and Brock who would rather sleep outside, and would not show herself to them until she felt her appearance was acceptable. This is especially notable in "Twice Smitten, Once Shy!", when after Pachirisu gave her a bad hair day, she freaked out and did not come out of her tent for a long time. However, later in the series, she also began sleeping outside, and became less concerned about her appearance, notable in Pokémon Journeys, namely in "Nightfall? Nightmares!" where she remained completely unfazed when both she and Chloe Cerise had messy hairs, fixing them with the help of Piplup's bubble beams.

Trivia[]

  • Her usual appearance is similar to her game counterpart's appearance in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, as well as their remakes, Pokémon BrilliantDiamond and ShiningPearl with few differences:
    • Her hair is dark blue, as opposed to her game counterpart's more grayish-blue hair.
    • Her V-neck tank-top reveals less of her undershirt compared to her game counterpart (as seen in the latter's artworks from Diamond and Pearl, as well as their remakes)
    • Her scarf is pink rather than red like her game counterpart's scarf, and is much shorter in comparison.
    • In her winter clothes, while she wears an outfit resembling her game counterpart's outfit from Pokémon Platinum (and an event outfit in Pokémon BrilliantDiamond and ShiningPearl), she still has her golden hair clips rather than pink hair clips like her game counterpart.
  • Dawn shares some characteristics with Serena from the XY series:
    • Their starter Pokémon defended them from wild Bug-type Pokémon (Piplup defended Dawn from Ariados and Fennekin defended Serena from Vespiquen).
    • They both become renowned through media (The Wallace Cup for Dawn and PokéVision and Showcases for Serena).
    • They both had a large number of rivals in their professions for the top spot.
    • Since the beginning (especially when they first meet), they both had great admiration for Ash and his actions out of love for Pokémon (when Ash rescued Pikachu by climbing one of Team Rocket's mecha for Dawn and when he helped an agitated Garchomp on Prism Tower on live TV for Serena), and the two are never judgmental of and very kind to him, even going as far as always believing in Ash to win his battles.
      • However, the only difference is that Serena has canonical romantic feelings for Ash while Dawn was simply good friends with him.
  • When Dawn comes to Snowpoint City with Ash and Brock, she wears her game counterpart's outfit from Pokémon Platinum; the only thing that is different is that Dawn kept her golden hair clips instead of replacing them in the pink ones.
  • Dawn is the third companion who's bicycle was destroyed by Pikachu (which was an accident).
    • She is, however, the first one who did not hold Ash responsible for his Pikachu destroying her bike (since Ash, Pikachu's trainer, was absent at that time and Pikachu was separated from him).
