The story of the drifter, Deacon, in Days Gone.
Background and Early life[]
Deacon was raised in Farewell, Oregon, where he was born in the early 1980s. His father once showed him how to drown a rat nest in order to get rid of it, and when he was a kid, his mother passed away from unexplained circumstances. He boarded freight trains on Saturdays and travelled along the Cascade rail lines. Deacon struggled academically in high school and finally quit out.
Deacon joined the U.S. Army as a young adult and completed a full tour of service in Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 10th Mountain Division, and his division cooperated with the Northern Alliance while he was there. Deacon disliked his military duty, despite the fact that he did it honourably.
Deacon's unit was attacked by a Taliban gang using flatbed trucks armed with ZU-23 adapted anti-aircraft weapons while on a mission as they advanced on Mazar-i-Sharif. Their Humvee was wrecked, and it crashed into the Hari river from a cliff. Deacon managed to escape the collision and swam out to the debris in search of survivors. Instead, he pulled eight victims back to shore, among them his sergeant Tanner. Deacon chose to quit the service because this incident emotionally devastated him.
After leaving the force, Deacon travelled back to the United States on a motorbike, where he rode about for a few years before returning to his house. Later, Deacon found work as a mechanic at an old man's shop called Jack, which was run by the president of the Mongrels Motorcycle Club. Deacon accepted Jack's personal offer of membership and was patched as an Enforcer in the MC.
Boozer, a fellow Sergeant-at-Arms, became his closest friend once he met him, and the two soon started to think of one other as "brothers." Later, Deacon met Jersey Jim, an African-American guy, whom he made close friends with and patched into the MC.
Years later, after his wife Joany was murdered in a drunk driving accident, Deacon discovered Boozer depressed and halfway through a whiskey case. Deacon drank the entire bottle and informed him that brothers don't drink themselves to death alone, so if he was going to do it, he wouldn't be doing it alone. Boozer was moved by Deacon's desire to die for him and went on with his life while suppressing his sorrow.
One day, after Sarah Whitaker's automobile broke down, Deacon ran into the young botanist. After stopping to get directions, he appeared to continue on his route before turning around and offering the woman a ride, which she accepted.
A big vehicle almost ambushed the couple as they were driving along the road. Deacon then returned her to the vehicle only to find several rednecks trying to rob it. Deacon tried to fight the group, but was outmatched and defeated. Sarah was able to frighten them away by firing a warning shot. Deacon chose to be by her side out of gratitude for her help.
Deacon and Sarah started dating and eventually developed a deep affection for one another. She gave him instruction in the study of plants, botany, particularly how to utilise lavender as a healing medicine. She also learned how to ride a motorcycle from Deacon. In addition, he became friends with Emma, the younger sister, with whom he became especially close. Deacon's criminal lifestyle, however, caused Sarah's parents to have a negative image of him.
Subsequently, Jessie Williamson, a disgraced MC member who later turned out to be Carlos, killed a fellow member over drug use. The MC's rules required that the person have their colours taken away. While Jack used a blowtorch to burn off his Mongrels tattoo, Deacon, Boozer, and Jim restrained him, and Jessie was expelled from the club.
Deacon slowly began to regret his involvement in Jessie's torture since he never informed Sarah about it and felt she would never pardon him for carrying out such an immoral conduct.
Deacon once took Sarah to the MC's restricted marijuana plantation. The two took a moonlit stroll through a forest that ended at a waterfall. He then asked Sarah to marry him using his Mongrels ring, and she accepted with joy. Deacon eventually made the decision to adopt the nomadic lifestyle, which meant that he would spend less time participating in the MC's activities and more time with Sarah. With the exception of Boozer, who stayed devoted to him, this choice angered the bulk of his clubmates.
Deacon and Sarah were married there in Marion Forks church. However, Sarah's family and the MC were unable or declined permission to attend the wedding.
2017 Freaker Outbreak[]
When an unidentified illness virus spread across the world, Deacon, Boozer, and Sarah were all in Farewell. Sarah suffered a stabbing as they moved through the devastated city. When the three learns that the old Brewery is used as an evacuation centre, they rush there, passing via a mechanics where a guy is behaving wild due to the loss of his wife. Deacon tries to calm the man down but is ultimately forced to murder him, as he was no longer to be reasoned with.
When they get at the brewery, Deacon threatens James O'Brian, a NERO employee, to take them all, but there isn't enough capacity. Boozer can't make it on his own because of his injury. Deacon puts Sarah on the helicopter and hands her his Mongrel ring, the one he used to pop the question, saying he wants it back. The helicopter departs.
Deacon and Boozer escape the city and proceed to the refugee camp the helicopter was intended for, but it has already come under attack from Freakers. Deacon and Boozer battle their way through and eliminate everyone despite being outnumbered. Sarah is not among the bodies when Deacon searches for her. Deacon decides that Sarah is dead despite not finding her body and chisels her name into a stone to serve as a grave.
Only a small number of people are still alive after the virus completely destroys society. Deacon and Boozer began working as bounty hunters, eliminating Freakers and renegade humans who attacked survivors' camps while they adjusted to the new order of things.
The two performed runs for a number of camps, including those led by Iron Mike, a guy who wished for all people to join together in order to better rebuild, Ada Tucker, a former prison matron who had a reputation for treating the residents in her camp like slaves, and infamous conspiracy theorist Mark Copeland who believed the virus was orchestrated by the U.S. Government.
After learning that Deacon was transporting individuals to Tucker's camp, Iron Mike broke up his relationship with Deacon because he believed that Tucker's practise of charging for new recruits amounted to slave trade. If Deacon ever returned, Iron Mike vowed to break his neck, thus causing a severe strain in their relationship.
Working with Copeland and Tucker[]
For a while, Deacon and Boozer ran independently. Tucker hired them to find Leon, who had taken the narcotics from her camp and sold them to Copeland. Alvarez tells Deacon and Boozer that Leon assaulted her after they found her badly battered when they were looking for Leon.
They then pursue him and eventually catch up with him. Deacon, who is wounded and surrounded by a group of freaks, threatens to tear Leon apart if he refuses to provide information on the drugs and promises to hasten his demise if he does. Deacon does a mercy murder after Leon passes up a map to his cache.
When they go back to their bikes, Deacon discovers that a bullet Leon had shot had broken his fuel pump. He did not want to fix his bike in the morning. To Crazy Willie's, a closed repair shop, Deacon and Boozer travel.
Boozer and Deacon talk about the thought of heading north to escape the region and the many unpleasant memories it evokes, particularly in light of Deacon's increasingly rash behaviour. Deacon concurs that going north would be a good idea.
Boozer leads as many Freakers as he can out of the crowded area while Deacon looks for a gasoline pump because the area is overrun by them. Deacon radios Boozer to let him know he's ready to depart after locating the necessary component.
Boozer tells Deacon that he has come upon Rippers. Boozer is being tortured by Rippers who use an acetylene torch to burn off his tattoos until Deacons rushes to find him. Boozer and Deacon escape just as a horde approaches after Deacon defeats the Rippers and offers assistance.
Boozer and Deacon return to their safe home. Deacon goes back outside to grab his bike on foot as Boozer goes to take a nap. Along the journey, he comes across a bunch of Marauders who want to capture their safehouse by force.
He takes the time to kill them since Boozer, who is already weak, cannot defend himself against them. He finds his bike missing when he goes back to the spot where he had left it. He sees someone from Copeland's camp and pursues them after concluding that someone from Copeland's camp must have taken it.
When he gets at Copeland's camp, he finds that his bike has been disassembled by Emmanuel "Manny" Martinez, the camp mechanic, who becomes alarmed upon realising that it was Deacon's bike. Copeland summons Deacon to a conversation before Deacon can do anything to Manny. Leon was delivering him Tuck's medicines, he says. Deacon claims not to be aware of Leon's location, but Copeland steals Leon's hat and realises that Deacon is responsible for Leon's death.
Copeland informs Deacon that he will make trips for the camp, including delivering Leon's cache to him, if Deacon wants Manny's assistance in having his bike serviced. Deacon agrees grudgingly. Deacon is instructed by Copeland to travel to an abandoned radio tower and remove several deserters from his camp in order to restore the radio uplink and enable Copeland to continue broadcasting Radio Free Oregon. Deacon starts removing Freaker nests to make the environment safer in the interim.
Deacon returns to the Pioneer Cemetery to retrieve Leon's cache; while he does so, a NERO helicopter soars overhead. Deacon is startled, so he goes to where they are landing and slips in to see what they are doing. He hears numerous team members talking about O'Brian, the man who was in the helicopter the night Sarah was stabbed, during this time. When Deacon phones Boozer to discuss his find after leaving the region, Boozer cautions Deacon not to get his hopes up. After briefly objecting, Deacon tells Boozer to take a nap.
Deacon arrives at Ada Tucker's Hot Springs camp to collect the reward he obtained from Leon and gets into a fight with Alkai Turner, the security chief. Before demanding that he send her personnel to labour the field in return for credits, Tucker asks Deacon to hunt for a young woman who was seen in Marion Forks.
When Deacon arrives to the shop, Alkai tells him that a fellow camper had recently escaped from a camp of the Rippers and told him that the Rippers kept inquiring about two bikers and referring to them as "Mongrels," which indicates that the Rippers are searching for Deacon and Boozer. Deacon visits Sarah's grave while he's nearby and vents over all that's transpired in the overrun NERO camp.
Deacon decides to chase a second NERO chopper he sees on the road. Deacon resists the soldiers' attempts to frighten him away by continuing to follow them while keeping a safe distance and following them to another landing zone. He observes as they make an effort to corral a Newt so they may test it. They are forced to abort, nevertheless, by a mob. When the Horde leaves Deacon's tracks clean, Deacon takes a radio from their stash with the intention of using it to find O'Brian.
Deacon travels to Marion Forks in the interim to investigate the report of a girl being seen there. Unexpectedly, a bunch of Rippers show there, also looking for her, and Deacon eliminates them. Lisa Jackson, who is found by Deacon living alone in her family home, believes that her parents may be at Tucker's camp when he tells her that he wants to take her someplace safe.
Deacon brings Lisa to the Hot Springs camp after she had an encounter with a bear, where she recognises Tucker as an old neighbour. Lisa callously dismisses Deacon's worries as he attempts to get Tucker to be gentle with Lisa.
Deacon finds that O'Brian will be on a field operation nearby after intercepting a radio broadcast on the NERO radio he brought. Deacon sneaks in and when he finds O'Brian alone, he corners him and wants to know what happened to Sarah. In exchange for Deacon's help, O'Brian offers to investigate what occurred and informs him that he would get in touch with him later over the radio.
Deacon keeps making runs for Copeland and Tucker, and while he does so, he notices that Lisa is not thrilled about being at the camp. Determined to cheer her up, he sets out to get a "Thunderegg" for her. He declines her request to be driven back to Marion Forks.
Later, Lisa is taken hostage by Rippers, and Tucker sent Deacon to retrieve her. Deacon discovers Lisa to be brutally bruised and abused. Lisa won't go back to the Hot Springs, so Deacon has to call Rikki Patil to arrange for her to take Lisa to Lost Lake. He tells Tucker lies and claims Lisa is deceased.
Lost Lake[]
Boozer, who is feeling helpless and is not getting any better, decides to go gather items to manufacture a burn ointment as a result of Deacon's concern. After a while, Boozer develops a fever and goes into a delirium, almost shooting Deacon with his shotgun. Deacon must accompany Boozer to Lost Lake to obtain some supplies because they have no other choice, in spite of Deacon's unsavoury past with Iron Mike.
Deacon is discovered smuggling antibiotics into the camp by Rikki and camp doctor Addison Walker, and after learning Deacon was motivated by his wish to treat Boozer, they agree to assist, later delivering Boozer to the camp infirmary.
Deacon visits Iron Mike to talk about their position and gets into a verbal altercation with Raymond "Skizzo" Sarkozi, the head of security, who views Deacon as a danger to their way of life. Deacon must assist in order for Iron Mike to let Boozer and Deacon stay, starting out by taking a Civil War-era Liston Knife in order to do surgery.
O'Brian calls Deacon and asks for a meeting, so Deacon accepts and goes there. O'Brien asks Deacon to install trackers on other NERO teams' helicopters and listen in on their discoveries in return for his assistance since he thinks the organization's top brass are up to something.
Deacon consents to assist. Deacon enters the location where they are conducting field operations and discovers them dissecting a live Freaker — one that is more mutated than the typical Freaker — while it is still alive. This disturbs Deacon, but O'Brian dismisses him and promises to get back to him, much to his frustration and annoyance.
While running for the camp at Rogue Camp, which is in the vicinity of an invaded town, Deacon discovers that Lisa has vanished. Rikki is chastised by Deacon for letting her leave. When he goes into the town to hunt for her, he discovers a letter that she left, in which she describes her suffering and her wish to move on from her losses.
Boozer's condition worsens, necessitating more medications to treat the illness. Desperate to assist his friend, Skizzo suggests that Deacon cross the border into the Ripper nation to recover medical supplies for the Red Cross from an aircraft that crashed not far from the beginning of the epidemic.
Skizzo tells him that Carlos and Iron Mike were haggling over the cargo hold's contents. They do not have time to wait, however, because crossing the Iron Ridge might lead to the termination of the deal that Iron Mike and Carlos established.
Deacon kills numerous members of the Rippers cult as he enters Iron Butte in search of the plane's debris. When he gets to the plane, he has to deal with a Breaker, a huge Freaker. After killing it, he discovers that the cargo hold has been virtually cleaned out, but he is still able to locate a canister of medicines.
Deacon turns around and heads back. At the border, he is met by Skizzo and a few of his men, who kill the Rippers who had been pursuing him. Skizzo is told by Deacon that the Rippers lied about dividing the supplies.
Deacon is sought after by Rikki, who claims that Addy was seeking for him. As they return to the camp, Rikki tells Deacon that Skizzo has been seeking for an occasion to confront the Rippers and has been using Deacon as justification for it.
Deacon is terrified when he realises that Addy is referring to amputating Boozer's arm, which she claims is the only option or else he would die, when she informs him that Boozer doesn't have time at the infirmary. Deacon and Addy hold Boozer down as Addy does the treatment with reluctance.
Deacon is uninterested in what Carlos wants, and Mike reprimands him for his careless disregard for the repercussions that his actions could have on others when he tells him that Rippers had seen him and that when Carlos found out, there would be revenge.
Deacon comes up with a plan to make the region safer by closing the neighbouring caverns while the Freakers are hibernating. While performing further runs for O'Brian, he tells Iron Mike about the scheme, and he agrees that it would be worth a shot, but they will require dynamite and detonating wire. To get copies of the keys that the local commissioner had stored, the two travel to Sherman's Camp. Only two survivors, including Iron Mike, were left as the epidemic quickly overran Sherman's camp.
Deacon understands that Iron Mike had survived the massacre and had led the commissioner to witness a heap of decaying remains in order to demonstrate to him what would happen if Lost Lake went to war with the Rippers. The village is suddenly overrun by marauders while the two are retrieving the maps to the mines, forcing them to battle their way out.
Iron Mike returns to Lost Lake and informs Deacon that he won't make a special effort to fight the Rippers, as though mankind has to band together to rebuild after all of this. Deacon visits Boozer, who, despite missing an arm, appears to be in excellent spirits and cracking jokes. Deacon is reassured by Addy that he owes him because he saved Boozer's life. Deacon departs for yet another O'Brian run through the neighbourhood.
Rikki asks Deacon for assistance in using the nearby hydroelectric dam to bring Lost Lake back online. When they find a power line has been damaged, they fight against a large number of Freaks and Rippers at the spot but are unable to restore electricity.
Later, the two go to fix it and battle a number of Newts to bring the power back. While Deacon goes to get fixed up by Rikki after being hurt by the Newts, the entire camp rejoices in the electricity's return. Skizzo observes from a distance as they have a brief private moment, while he later sees Deacon's Mongrel tattoos.
Boozer has become inebriated and fled the farm where he works, according to Deacon, who went to check on him. He finds his patched brother facing up against a horde. With a lecture about their close brotherhood, Deacon brings him to his senses. Deacon urges Rikki to create Boozer a knife attachment for his prosthetic arm so that he may protect himself while they sprint back to Lost Lake on his bike. When Boozer receives his new weapon, he is noticeably pleased.
Deacon and Skizzo are employed by Mike to gather wire for the bomb that will be used to contain a horde. The two argue throughout yet succeed in their endeavours in the end. When Skizzo reveals that he is attempting to kill Iron Mike with the aid of the camp council, Deacon is upset.
When Skizzo suggests that they co-lead Lost Lake, the drifter becomes more and more unsettled of Skizzo's behaviour. Deacon declines, saying that despite his previous deeds, he has never done so and never would. Deacon is urged to be open-minded about the offer by Skizzo.
Later, the pair slip into Iron Butte to obtain more components for the impending explosion. Deacon starts to like Skizzo, but when he turns on Deacon to the Rippers, their mutual hatred intensifies. He asserts that the only way to ensure the protection of Lost Lake was to use his transformation into one of the Rippers as a bargaining chip.
Deacon is transported to the temple of the Rippers, where a shadowy creature torments him. Carlos, the head of the Rippers, emerges as the character. Deacon identifies Carlos as the ruthlessly expelled Mongrel Jessie Williamson, who placed bounties on Boozer and him in retaliation for the MC's treatment of him.
Deacon and Boozer must both be subjected to torture before Carlos, he promises, will kill Deacon. He uses a bow torch to totally burn off the tattoo on Deacon's right arm before leaving the room. Carlos promises to remove one tattoo at a time until he hands Boozer in. In order to get Boozer for themselves, the Rippers next get ready to invade Lost Lake.
A short while later, Lisa enters the chamber and releases the tied drifter. In an effort to help her forget her background, the Rippers abducted her and tormented her once she joined. Deacon exits the temple and returns with his equipment before turning around to assist Lisa. Deacon assists her in escaping once her betrayal was uncovered. Deacon quickly heads to Lost Lake to help his brother before the two part ways.
He comes just in time to stop the Ripper attack and save numerous campers. When the signal is given that a new pact has been signed, the cultists disperse. Deacon finds Carlos, Mike, Boozer, Skizzo, other campers, and Rippers holding one another at gunpoint when he enters Mike's cabin.
When Deacon uncovers Skizzo's treachery, he desperately claims to be innocent and to be loyal to Iron Mike, claiming that it was done for the greater good. Carlos and the Rippers obey Mike's order to go, but with a foreboding air. Skizzo is being detained by Mike and is in court.
“ | Deacon: When I was a kid — My dad found a rat's nest underneath one of our sheds. You want to know what he did? Rikki: Can't even guess. Deacon: Well he waited 'til morning, when they'd all be asleep, he laid a piece of plywood over the hole, and told me to go get the garden hose. And he said to me — I'll never forget what he said to me — he said, the best way to kill a rat's nest is to drown 'em. Rikki: You're gonna — blow up the reservoir above the camp? Deacon: Now that's an idea. Rikki: Deacon, you can't do — Deacon: They wanna Rest in Peace? I'm gonna help 'em out. Rikki: Deacon, you can't do that. |

~ Deacon and Rikki remarking the former's planned retaliatory attack on the Rippers, attributing it to his childhood obsession. |
While Skizzo is in prayer, Deacon teases him and goes to see Iron Mike. While Mike contends that enough blood has been shed, Deacon demands that they deal with Carlos and the Rippers once and for all. Deek disobeys Mike's order and concocts a plan to deal with their ex-compatriot once and for all with Boozer, who also identified Carlos as Jessie. The two brothers leave towards Iron Butte with the intention of demolishing the adjacent dam in order to drown the Ripper temple.
As Boozer places C4 along the dam, the two battle several Rippers there. The bulk of the Rippers in the temple are wiped off by the flood, but numerous Freaks emerge to join the carnage. Carlos shoots PCP in Deacon's face when he confronts him inside the demolished temple. Carlos mocks the confused Deacon but is quickly slain in the melee. Despite the cult's cruel activities, the two silently depart the damaged temple, regretting the innumerable fatalities.
“ | Iron Mike: I let him go. Skizzo. Ain't no way he was gettin' a fair trial. Deacon: You let him go. Iron Mike: Told him to ride out. Not come back. Deacon: Jesus Christ, Mike, do you have any idea what the f**k you've done? |

~ Deacon growing extremely angry of Mike's decision to let go of Skizzo. |
Deacon tells Mike what transpired when he gets back to Lost Lake. Although the news disturbs him, he informs Deacon that he banished Skizzo to prevent further violence. Deacon is quite angered by this, while Boozer is happy with the choice, citing Mike's arguments.
O'Brian informed Deacon that Sarah was killed when the NERO refugee camp she was in was overrun by Freaks and that the only survivors were priority refugees who had been flown out. As a result, Deacon is coming to grips with Sarah's death.
He recalls a day when he tried to see Addy at work at Cloverdale Research but was turned away because he saw Rikki and Addy working on a bike. She must have been a priority survivor who was flown out of the refugee camp since Deek recalls that she had high-class security clearance.
After O'Brian learns of Sarah's impending departure, Deacon approaches him with the news, and they meet to talk about the problem. Boozer follows Deacon but remains near the bike so as not to alarm O'Brian. She did leave, but the camp she was transported to was taken over by the Deschutes County Militia, a strong militaristic force with enough weaponry to fight NERO men, the scientist informs Deek.
O'Brian cannot leave Deacon in Militia territory due to the efficiency of their weapons in warfare, thus Deacon must get there himself. As a reminder of her just discovered survival, he uses his knife to scrape up her grave.
With renewed optimism, Deacon heads out but discovers Boozer is gone. He discovers that Boozer has engaged in combat with and killed several hunting dog-wielding Rippers. Boozer becomes enraged at the dog hunters after being especially distressed over a dying one. When they arrive back to Lost Lake, Addy encourages Deek to acquire Boozer a puppy to help him feel better. Boozer is delighted when Deacon names the puppy Jack after the president of the Mongrels shortly after.
Deschutes County Militia[]
“ | Deacon: You know a way over the Thielsen Pass. You told me once that, uh — Iron Mike: I told you nothin'. Go on! I can't help you, Deek. Deacon: Oh c'mon. Just draw me a Goddamn map? Iron Mike: After everything you've done? Deacon: After everything that I've — What about what you've done, old man? Huh? Sherman's Camp — Iron Mike: You go on — Deacon: The things that you did — Iron Mike: — you get out of here! You leave me be! |

~ Deacon and Iron Mike heatedly arguing at the events of Riding Nomad Again. |
Deacon makes the decision to go south by himself in quest of Sarah. Even Boozer, who claims it is a lost cause, and the rest of Lost Lake are angered by this. Deacon is shown how to get around the mountains by Iron Mike, but only if he never returns.
As he continues south, he comes upon militiamen who are being assaulted by a Rager bear. Deek quickly dispatches it, and Captain Derrick Kouri and Corporal Glen Russell greet him as a prospective recruit. Deacon becomes sceptical of the Militia when he sees that Kouri is sporting the Mongrels ring he took from Sarah.
To go to the Militia's command centre on Wizard Island, Kouri and Deacon set off from Diamond Lake, the Militia's forward outpost. There, he encounters Colonel Matthew Garret of the Deschutes County Militia, a zealot who believes he has been chosen by God to rule mankind until the end of the world.
Deek encounters other recruits including Wade Taylor, a former heroin addict who rapidly bonds with Deacon, and Crystal Adkins, a brazen convicted criminal. While choosing Deacon and Taylor to be Militia soldiers, Garret quickly assigns Adkins to the labour camp due to her history as a criminal. Deacon gets elevated to corporal by the Colonel as a result of his involvement in the Freakshow.
Lieutenant James Weaver, a scientist developing Napalm Molotov cocktails to aid in the destruction of Freaker hordes, is introduced to Deacon by Garret. The "Wizard Island Witch", another anti-Freak scientist with the moniker, later revealed to be Sarah, is subsequently brought to Deacon. Deacon's companion, Sarah rejects him, saying she needed to give him his first requisition order. The two hug and kiss, but Sarah rejects Deacon's invitation to leave Wizard Island. Deacon reluctantly agrees to her vow that she would do so when her study is finished.
Deacon does several tasks for Wizard Island and Diamond Lake. Gathering supplies for Weaver and Sarah is one of them, as is pretending to give in a reward on an AWOL Crystal Adkins. Due to Sarah's obligations to the Militia and her competition with Weaver to develop an anti-Freak super weapon, their relationship is strained.
The two show signs of fondness for one another, but Deek finds it difficult to spend time with her because they are concealing their marriage status and are frequently apart owing to their different jobs.
To get a device for her anti-Freak study, Sarah spends time with Deacon travelling to Chelmut Community College. When Sarah has multiple scary encounters with freaks and marauders, which deeply frightens Deacon, their relationship becomes even more tight. The two leave ways on bad terms after competing in their hunt.
Later, the two make up and agree to embark on another journey to aid Sarah's study. To locate a DNA synthesiser to research the pathogen, they go north to Sarah's former workplace, Cloverdale Research Iron Butte Facility. They learn that Jim Moore, a cynical security officer, and the rest of Cloverdale's security team were responsible for the murders of all of her employees. After Jim acknowledges that her friends were slain to prevent an excessive number of survivors from residing in the facility, they continue to battle through them till Sarah shoots Jim dead.
Sarah's fears are verified when the pair visits the laboratory. She had assumed that Cloverdale had incorporated her findings into a bioweapon that would produce the Freaker virus. Sarah sobs as she recalls how David Gorman, an intern, told her in confidence that he was going to expose the scheme. He went to an environmental conference in Portland with a sample of the virus, but she dismissed this information as hysteria. The planet would soon collapse once he later infected everyone there.
Sarah will be the one to eradicate this infection, Deacon reassures her. He informs Boozer and Rikki she has survived and orders them to travel to Cloverdale to get the food from the self-sustaining facility. The couple must go for the south right away before the winter makes travel impractical, which disappoints Boozer, who is thrilled to hear this news. Deacon and Sarah must spend the night in a cabin. When the two spend the night together, the tension between them is permanently reduced.
Deacon is tasked with keeping an eye on a NERO team that entered a cave to conduct months-long research on an infected individual before retrieving the findings. Except for O'Brian's friend, Cooper, who had the chance to radio his family farewell, the squad is dead, he discovers.
“ | Deacon: O'Brian. Four men died for this shit. Hope it was worth it. O'Brian: Jesus, listen to you. Those were my men! I don't need you or anyone else telling me how — Deacon: You know, you fly around in your helo, well above the shit. And you crawl back into, what? Cozy underground bunker, whatever the f-ck. You have no idea what it's like out here — O'Brian: I don't have to listen to this shit — Deacon: What it takes to survive. Oh, you know those men, Cooper — the others, they had no idea what they were walking into, but you did. Didn't you? Huh? Didn't you! O'Brian: Radio me when you and your old lady are ready to be lifted out. Maybe this time, you'll get on the chopper with her. |
„ |
~ Deacon and O'Brian arguing during the events of What it Takes to Survive. |
Deacon eliminates the Reacher accountable for the team's demise as well as an invading horde. Deek bitterly berates O'Brian for bringing the squad into a trap that would kill them, which infuriates the scientist a lot. O'Brian asserts that Deacon and Sarah will be evacuated out when he gives the order notwithstanding the disagreement.
After hearing Garret say in a speech that he has been informed about survivor camps to the north that he would eradicate, Deacon returns to Wizard Island to flee aboard a NERO helicopter. In order for the helicopter to land, Deacon takes out their rocket launchers. After Weaver permits them to go, the pair sneaks to the LZ but encounter another issue.
They are greeted by Garret, who introduces them to several fresh recruits, including Skizzo. He sees Deacon right once and lunges at him, causing commotion that leads to the three of them being taken into custody. After the Militia soldiers fired at their chopper, O'Brian and his colleagues were forced to evacuate.
“ | Garret: You wear the image of Cerberus, the Hound of Hades. How fitting, that you were discovered ascending from the underworld. But you are not Hades, are you? Deacon St. John. Deacon: He's lyin' to you. I never hurt anyone and the truth is — Garret: You hide behind angelic names, and clothe yourself in lies. You are Judas! |

~ Garret furiously confronting Deacon. |
While being questioned by the Colonel, Skizzo and Deacon furiously assert their innocence. When Skizzo responds with another lie, Deacon is forced to admit that he has never met him. As Rikki was tending to Deek's wounds in the past, he claimed that Deek had thrown himself at the woman and detailed the Mongrel tattoo on his back. Garret reprimands Deacon for his "activities" after noticing the complementary tattoo on his back.
Due to Sarah's time spent in one of NERO's refugee camps and the fact that one of their helicopters had just attempted to rescue her, the Colonel suspects her of being a NERO spy. Garret is shown the radio by Deacon, who asserts that he was the spy. Garret promptly smashes the radio after receiving a call from O'Brian. As he orders Deacon to be taken away to await trial, he apologises to Sarah for attacking her. Deek is taken away after being knocked out by Kouri.
Wrath and Fury[]
“ | Kouri: Good. I thought I heard you breathin'. Deacon: F-ck you — Kouri: That's what I want to hear. Means the shit hasn't broken you yet. Deacon: Okay. Why? |

~ Deacon and Kouri in Ascending From the Underworld. |
Deacon is being dragged by Derrick Kouri toward the northern border. When he comes to, he informs Deek that he could not have travelled all this way for the sole purpose of finding out whether former acquaintances were Militia members, as Deacon had said he had done.
He pushes him to enlist aid in taking Garret out and rescuing Sarah after deducing that he must have done it for her. In order to escape to Reno, which could be safer, Kouri and his men inform Deek that they are going AWOL. Deacon expresses his gratitude for what he has done before leaving to Lost Lake, which was under heavy militia attack.
On his trip to Lost Lake, Deacon brutally murders every militia member he passed by in Santiam Pass. As the ark's security chief, Skizzo has been elevated to captain and designated Garret's second-in-command. He takes the initiative in the assault, but they are repulsed soon after Deacon shows there. After learning that the traitor had escaped, Deek rushes to get Skizzo but then goes to check on Iron Mike. Rikki and Addy are by Mike's bedside as he lies in bed, mortally wounded. He says he's sorry to Deacon and that he was correct. Deacon assures Mike that he will survive, but minutes later, he passes away from his injuries.
To communicate with the worried Lost Lake survivors, Deacon and Rikki head outside. Deek attempts to comfort them while they are grieving after he conveys the news of Mike's passing. Deacon resumes speaking once Rikki commands their attention. Before they can organise another attack, he gathers them with the idea to strike the Militia's headquarters.
Before the attack, Boozer was given the position of chief of security at Lost Lake. He and Deacon plan to blow up the Militia's fortress through North Gate with an armoured truck, but they need supplies to make the bomb. Deek battles the Militia soldiers stationed on three separate encampments around Lost Lake and two sizeable hordes, but he succeeds in assembling the bomb's components. They start preparing the attack while Rikki builds the armoured automobile.
Should Deacon have Level 3 on both Copeland's Camp and Hot Springs Camp, Copeland and Alkai will join on the fight against the Deschutes County Militia in Wizard Island, and stop their threat from reaching north.
The Battle of Wizard Island[]
To permanently put a stop to the Militia, Deacon and his comrades rush to Wizard Island. Boozer shoves Deek out of the camp and then seems to give himself up by ramming the explosive vehicle through the island's main gate. Despite his fear of the water, Deacon manages to swim to shore while feeling upset. On his route to the ark, he battles his way past several troops. Weaver is saved by Deacon from the troops, and he also knows where the Colonel is keeping Sarah.
Deek and Skizzo engage in a bloody brawl outside of Garret's quarters. Although Skizzo appears to be winning the battle, Deacon stabs him, leaving him for dead. He mocks Skizzo for his prior deeds before cutting Skizzo's throat to end his life. Deek approaches Garret and overhears him adamantly stating that they are all protected from the mayhem.
When Deacon approaches the Colonel's quarters, he is holding Sarah at gunpoint with a number of troops. Garret insists that Deacon join him for tea and orders him to sit down. He reprimands the wanderer for ruining all of his creations. Garret responds that Deacon is worse than the Freakers, which infuriates him and sends him flying. Sarah tries to take the Colonel's gun, but is retaliated upon with a pistol whip.
Garret tries to aim the gun at Deacon while placing his hand around his throat, but he suddenly becomes weaker. Because Sarah laced his tea with hemlock, his face goes purple and he passes away. With the biggest danger to their life being gone, the couple embraces.
A Victory Like no Other Before[]
Boozer, who had leapt out of the car before it detonated, is reunited with Deacon after the surviving group is thanked for everything they have done. With the surviving survivors and the Militia men who switched sides, he delivers an upbeat address.
Weaver takes control of Wizard Island and expresses gratitude to Deacon for his efforts. In celebration of their win, Deek burns the Militia flag and gives Sarah a kiss. As they finally have a chance to be together, the two ride off while exchanging kisses.
They choose to live at Deacon and Boozer's house in Lost Lake.
Encountering an Old Face[]
Later, Deacon runs across Lisa outside of Lost Lake and tells the guard with absolute certainty that she is not a Ripper. Just in time to protect her, he shows up and asks her what she is up to. Lisa has become a nomad and is transporting several Freaker ears to turn in.
Deacon says he'll assist her and insisted she see Sarah before telling her why. He says it's because Sarah reminds him of her younger sister. Lisa thinks back on her older sister and decides to remain, although briefly. They head over to meet Sarah after Deacon chuckles.
O'Brian's Ominous Warning[]
Deacons goes to Wizard Lake to get his rings back after they were taken away when he was hired. Later, O'Brian calls him and demands they meet to talk about something important. When Deek runs into him, O'Brian spills a sinister secret. He takes off his helmet to reveal that he is an intelligent Freaker, a never-before seen species of Freakers. Deacon is forewarned by O'Brian that NERO will destroy the survivors, and he expresses regret that nothing can be done to stop it.
O'Brian jumps onto the departing chopper with superhuman agility before taking off. As the helicopter lifts off, Deacon is afraid and confused. Later, he heard Copeland mention NERO in his final show on Radio Free Oregon, where this time Copeland was right, according to Deacon.
