Second Lieutenant Delmont "Del" Walker is major character in the Gears of War series, being the tritagonist in Gears of War 4 and Gears 5.
He was once a ward of the state after the deaths of his parents, and was sent to boarding school where he met and befriended James Dominic "JD" Fenix. Though he joined the new Coalition of Ordered Governments, Del would convince JD to go AWOL after the massacre at Settlement 2. He would return to the COG after helping the Outsider Kait Diaz find her mother from the new threat, the Swarm.
He is voiced by Eugene Byrd, who also voiced Marcus "Boomer" Boone in Battlefield: Hardline.
Biography[]
Early Life[]
Delmont "Del" Walker was born in 20 A.E. to unnamed parents, who died when Del was young, making him an orphan and ward of the new state. Del would be placed into a boarding school for the gifted in New Ephyra, where he met and befriended James Dominic "JD" Fenix, the son of the legendary war heroes, Marcus Fenix and Anya Stroud. Del became JD's best friend, and would spend most of his time at the Stroud estate, where he became a practical member of the Fenix family. Walker had many fond memories with the Fenix family, but they stopped after the death of Anya, which strained JD and Marcus's relationship. Despite the strained relationship between father and son, Del remained close with the two to support them due to their loss.
Joining the COG[]
When JD decided to join the new Coalition of Ordered Governments, Del followed him into joining the Officer Corps, and Marcus gave Walker his rag before he left. After graduating from the Coalition of Ordered Governments Military Academy in 39 A.E., Del and JD were given the rank of second lieutenant, and were tasked with running security of DeeBees by Mina Jinn. While patrolling in Settlement 2, JD fired on protesters there, and became disillusioned with the new COG. Del convinced JD to leave the COG, seeing the new government as corrupt, and the two joined the Outsiders. Walker was never told the real truth of what happened at Settlement 2, and would only learn a year later. Del and JD befriended Kait Diaz, who was the daughter of the Outsiders' leader, Reyna.
Gears of War 4[]
Six months after leaving the new COG and joining the Outsiders, Del participated in raiding Settlement 5 with JD, Kait and her uncle, Oscar. After surviving a windflare, Del and the group infiltrated the settlement and battled against DeeBees, which were assigned to protect the area from outsiders or raiders. After collecting the fabricator from the settlement, Del and JD were confronted by Prime Minister Jinn, but managed to escape unknowingly by the assistance of JD's honorary uncle, Damon Baird. The group returned to Fort Umson, they protected the village from DeBees that were sent by Prime Minister Jinn, who accused the outsiders of abducting COG civilians. After protecting the village, Del and JD worked on trying to fix the fabricator, which sustained damage from the attack, and Kait was tasked with watching guard.
While continue working on the fabricator, the village was attacked by creatures that abducted numerous villagers, including Reyna and Oscar. Del, JD and Kait decided to go the Stroud estate to show Marcus the crystal that came from one of the creatures' hand, and Fenix recognized it before Jinn arrived to arrest the group. Del followed Marcus to his armory, where he retrieved COG armor and weapons to fight against the COG assault. The Stroud estate was mostly destroyed by a Vulture gunship, the group traveled to the Osmium mines where Marcus explained after the Locust were defeated, they were trapped into crystalized cocoons. During the travel, Marcus was abducted by a Snatcher, leaving the group to abandon their original mission to save the outsiders to rescue Marcus. After dealing with hordes of Swarm variants, they found Marcus who revealed that everyone that was abducted was killed, and absorbed into the hivemind.
Going through an abandoned dam, the group battled the Speaker, who had abducted Reyna, and also fought the Swarmak, a deformed version of a Brumak. The group then defeated the Speaker, and traveled to the outskirts of Speyer, where they had a friendly conversation with Prime Minister Jinn. After dealing with Swarm reinforcements and later a counterattack, Marcus called in his old allies, Baird, Augustus Cole, and Samantha Byrne. Baird reveals that he assisted Del and JD at Settlement 5, and gives the two assault mechs to assault the Tollem Dam. The group battle a massive creature, and Kait finds her mother entombed in the Swarm's hive, and Reyna tells her daughter to free her so she can die. After Reyna's death, Kait shows the group the medallion her mother gave, which Del says is beautiful. Unbeknownst to Del and JD, the medallion was a Locust symbol, indicating Kait and Reyna's lineage to the Locust's queen, Myrrah.
Gears 5[]
After the assault at the Tollem Dam, the Coalition saw the threat of the Swarm and decided to have Del and JD reinstated into the military with their ranks. Del would help Baird retrieve combat data to further improve the efficiency of the DeeBees at the COG training ground at Ephyra. While fighting against the Swarm, Del would learn of JD's actions at Settlement 2, causing his friendship with Fenix to become strained.
