Heroine Overview

Oh, Ash I'm so proud of you. You're finally gonna fulfill your dream and start your Pokémon training. But I'm -- I'm gonna miss you so much. Oh, my little boy.
~ Delia to Ash before his journey begins

Delia Ketchum (born April 24, 1970) is Ash Ketchum's mother. She appears in some episodes of Pokémon the Series and one of the films. She also appears in some episodes of Pokémon Chronicles. She also owns a Mr. Mime nicknamed Mimey, who is a Pokémon caretaker of Ash's house. She also runs a Pallet town restaurant as a waitress. It is unknown who her husband is/was that conceived Ash with her.

She appears to be based on the player's mother (usually Red's mother; also Leaf's mother in FireRed & LeafGreen) from Generations 1 & 2, Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen and Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver. She is voiced by Masami Toyoshima in the Japanese version, and by Veronica Taylor (4kids dub; Seasons 1 - 8) and Sarah Natochenny (TPCi dub; Season 9 - Present) in the English dub, with both English voice actresses also voicing Ash Ketchum, her son, in the same series.

In Pokémon the Movie 3: Spell of the Unown, Delia was kidnapped by a legendary Pokémon Entei, who hypnotized her into thinking that she was the mother of Molly Hale, but was later rescued.

History

Delia runs Pallet Town's only restaurant, Pallet House, which she inherited from her mother. When she was younger, she dreamed of becoming both a model and a Pokémon Trainer, but abandoned those dreams to run the restaurant after Ash was born. Pocket Monsters: The Animation also elaborates that the reason why she raised Ash by herself is that his father married her fast and then left just as fast due to him being a Pokémon Trainer. It is also implied that the reason he and Ash's grandfather didn't return is because they achieved nothing in their goal.

Delia debuted in Pokémon - I Choose You!, telling Ash that he should get to bed for his big day tomorrow. She was then seen in front of Professor Oak's Laboratory with a small group of people from Pallet Town, cheering Ash on as he walked out with his first Pokémon. She was shown to be very sad that her little boy was growing up, but quickly put it aside to tell him everything that she had packed in his backpack for his journey. When she unintentionally insulted Pikachu, who was already upset at getting Ash for a Trainer, he used his Thunder Shock and shocked the entire group.

She was seen again in the the next episode when Ash decided to call her while waiting for his Pikachu to be healed by Nurse Joy. She seemed to be surprised that he was already in Viridian. She also mentioned his father, saying it took him four days to get there when he began his Pokémon journey. Mentioning that his father would be proud of him, she commented that he was the apple of his eye. When he continued to shoot down her words of encouragement, she became angry and scolded him by telling him that he can do anything he set his mind to.
