Demeter is a major character in the roguelike video game Hades by Supergiant Games.

She is the Olympian Goddess of the Seasons, and the mother of Persephone, making her the maternal grandmother of Zagreus and Melinoƫ the protagonists of Hades I and II respectively.

After her daughters disappearance, she doomed mankind with eternal winter until she found out her daughter was alive and well in the Underworld. After agreeing to spend half the year on Olympus and the other half in the Underworld, Demeter made the winter last only for the time her daughter was away.

Demeter returns in Hades II, aiding her granddaughter Melinoƫ, against the evil Titan Chronos.

She is voiced by Laila Berzins.

Biography[]

Past[]

Demeter was one of the six gods who defeated the Titan Chronos, along with her sisters, Hestia and Hera and Chronos' rebellious sons Hades, Poseidon, and Zeus. After her sister Hera married Zeus and they became the new king and queen of the gods, Demeter was assigned with dominion over the Seasons. She would soon fall in love with a mortal farmer and together they would have a daughter named Persephone. As mortals do, the farmer would soon die, but Persephone was immortal like her mother, so she took her with her to Olympus to live among the gods. Unfortunately when Persephone became an adult, she would be kidnapped by Zeus and sent to the Underworld as a "gift" to Hades. Thinking her daughter was gone forever, Demeter condemned the mortal world to an eternal winter.

Hades I[]

Along with the other gods, Demeter decides to help Zagreus, Hades' son to escape the Underworld and join his uncles and cousins on Olympus, by sending him boons. Unbeknownst to Demeter, Zagreus was also Persephone's son and thus her grandson. Finally, when Zagreus found his mother, Demeter finally reunited with her daughter and stopped the eternal winter for half the year.

Hades II[]

When Chronos would escape Tartarus and take over the Underworld, Demeter would send boons to her granddaughter Melinoƫ to help her fight him. After a remorseful Chronos is brought before Zeus and Hera, Demeter is still resentful for what he has done, but refuses to give him a shroud of her attention.

Personality[]

Demeter is overall a benevolent goddess, but like all Olympians, she is incredibly flawed. While she loves her daughter, it's implied she was too overprotective of her at times. Like all the Olympians, she can be indifferent to the lives of mortals as seen when she and Poseidon were joking about creating a flood again that nearly killed most of the population. She is also rude and condescending to every one but her grandkids. However, she's also moral enough to be against Chronos and his army's so called "Golden Age".

Powers and Abilities[]

  • Immortality: As a goddess, Demeter can't die.
  • Cryokinesis: As goddess of the Seasons, Demeter controls snow and ice.

Trivia[]

  • In mythology, Demeter was associated with plants rather than snow.
