Appearance[]

Denji has scruffy blonde hair. He has brown eyes and bags underneath, resulting in a dazed and tired expression. His teeth are noticeably sharp and angular. Due to malnutrition in his childhood, he has a scrawny build with protruding ribs, he wears the standard Public Safety Devil Hunter uniform, consisting of white shirt, black tie, and slacks.

Personality[]

Denji is both brash and naïve as a result of being unable to have a formal education and socialize due to living in severe poverty. His personality comes off as rude and harsh in an almost childish way. However, he has a good sense of empathy towards other people, willing to save those in danger as much as he could, showing he is a kind-hearted person despite his shortcomings. While Denji doesn't necessarily possess the highest intelligence, he is capable of clever ideas to take down Devils, such as lighting himself on fire and using the light emitted to weaken Santa Claus enough to kill her.

After becoming a Public Safety Devil Hunter and fulfilling his basic needs, Denji is unsure of what he wants in life. Many of Denji's said basic needs were fueled by sexual desire, going so far as to accept dangerous missions in exchange for some form of sexual gratification. One such case was feeling up Power in exchange for rescuing her cat, however, he later realized and laments that the satisfaction from such intimate acts is fleeting. Denji also harbors a fear that his seeming lack of empathy and attachment after his transformation is a sign that he is losing his sense of humanity.

While transformed into his Hybrid form, Denji becomes extremely ruthless, aggressive, bloodthirsty and sadistic, releasing his most deranged side while facing other Devils, to the point of enjoying killing them. He also displays a twisted and sarcastic sense of humor. The first time he transformed into his Hybrid form he found it amusing that he could pay off his debt by killing all the Yakuza members who were turned into zombies due to the power of the Zombie Devil. While facing the Eternity Devil he says that "its blood tastes like rat but drinking it while watching a son of a bitch suffering and feeling terrified makes it taste as delicious as a strawberry jam", and considers himself a genius for creating a "perpetual motion machine" worthy enough of a Nobel Prize.

As the story progresses, it becomes more evident that Denji is emotionally damaged, and desperate to feel love and be loved by someone. He clings to Makima as a coping mechanism, even going as far as stating that his wish was to just be a mindless dog, so he would not feel hurt from losing the things and people he loved. This backfired, as watching Power die was enough for him to surrender himself to Makima completely, essentially erasing his personality and mental state. This is still evident when Denji tells Kishibe that he did not set out to kill Makima, but rather become one with her, allowing him to defeat her.

Near the end of the first part, as well as at the start of the second part, Denji starts growing more ambitious and lavish in his desires; whilst before he was happy with simply being able to eat jam on toast and feeling a girl's chest, now he desires to have steak for breakfast every day and to have numerous, lustful girlfriends. It's also shown he has grown more arrogant in his Devil-slaying, as he is willing to expose his identity if it means he'd get more attention from girls, despite how disastrous the consequences would be.

After the apparent death of Nayuta and his banishment into the Aging Devil's alternate dimension, Denji experienced an emotional breakdown, showing that despite his bravado, he did feel immense self-loathing and guilt for all of the death that surrounded him, as well as shame for obsessing over his lustful desires that distracted him from being a true hero; his attempts to build close connections, whether they be familial or romantic, always resulting in bloodshed made him willing to wait the supposed needed 1000 years in Aging Devil's realm to be assimilated into nature and restored to life, feeling that he deserved such a lengthy, miserable, isolating, and painful existence as recompense for his failures to keep his loved ones alive.

Powers and Abilities[]

  • Chainsaw Proficiency: Even before becoming a hybrid, Denji is shown to be quite capable in using chainsaws. Back in his private Devil Hunter days, Denji would use Pochita as both a weapon and a tool for his lumberjack side job. He demonstrates these abilities again on the finale, when he attacks Makima using Power's blood chainsaw.
  • Tomahawk Proficiency: Denji's weapon of choice while on his human mode is a tomahawk. He uses it whenever he's not feeling like transforming and is shown to be quite capable wielding it, being able to decapitate a Fiend with just one swing.
  • Hemokinesis: After receiving Power's blood, Denji temporarily acquires her blood manipulation powers, using them to create a blood chainsaw.
  • Hybrid Transformation: As the Chainsaw Hybrid, Denji is able to partially transform into the Chainsaw Devil and use his demonic abilities. He triggers his transformation by revving a chainsaw pull cord located on his chest.
    • Chainsaw Protrusions: In his Hybrid form, Denji is equipped with chainsaws that come out of both of his arms, which he can use to attack enemies. He's also able to retract them at will and can generate them from other parts of his body, such as his legs. If Denji is low on blood, he will not be able to fully transform and his chainsaws can also retract as a result of blood loss.
      • Chain Manipulation: Denji is also able to detach the chains from his saws and manipulate them freely as a rope. He uses this ability several times on the series, such as when he used his chains as a bridle to ride on Beam's back on their fight against Reze.
    • Clone Creation: By removing his own heart, Denji is able to create a clone out of himself and control him from for away. He uses this ability in order to trick Makima in their final fight.
    • Regeneration: Denji is able to regenerate or heal himself by drinking blood and, because of this, he can sustain all kinds of lethal injuries, such as being beheaded, bisected and even burning himself alive.
    • Immortality: As a hybrid, Denji is immortal and nearly unkillable as he's able to recover from the most fatal wounds, to the point that even other devils consider that to be unnatural. The only possible way to kill him is to completely destroy his Devil heart.

Trivia[]

  • Some translations use the term Devilman/Devilmen for Fiends, which is often seen as hinting at obvious inspirations for the series itself. Later on in the story, Denji gets called a "Devil-human" by a news reporter in Chapter 103.
  • Denji makes a cameo appearance in Chapter 259 of My Hero Academia being among the heroes who raid the Gunga Mountain Villa. However in the anime adaptation this cameo was removed presumably to avoid copyright infringement.
