Denisovich "Dennis" Loughran is a major character in the Hotel Transylvania franchise. He is the half-human/half-vampire son of Jonathan and Mavis. He is also the grandson of Dracula and Martha (his maternal grandparents) as well as Mike and Linda (his paternal grandparents).
He is voiced by Asher Blinkoff as kid and Sunny Sandler (who voices Sunny, sister of Winnie) as baby. In the Japanese dub from the movie, he is voiced by Ikue Ōtani, who is best known for voicing Pikachu.
Biography[]
Hotel Transylvania 2[]
Some time after the events of the first film, Mavis and Johnny are finally married, with the blessing of her father Count Dracula. A year after the wedding, Mavis reveals to Drac that she is pregnant and later gives birth to a baby boy whom the couple name Dennis, nicknamed “Dennisovitch” by Dracula.
As Dennis's fifth birthday nears, he has yet to grow his fangs and Drac worries that his grandson might not gain vampire powers. Noticing the potential dangers her son might face living in Transylvania, Mavis starts to consider moving to Johnny's hometown in California in order to give Dennis a more “normal” childhood, much to Drac's disapproval. Drac tells Johnny (who does not want to leave the hotel either) to bring Mavis to California to visit his parents, Mike and Linda, but to make sure to keep her distracted so that she will not move, leaving Dracula to "babysit" Dennis.
Convinced that Dennis is a "late fanger", Drac enlists his friends Frank, Wayne, Griffin, Murray, and Blobby to help train Dennis to become a monster, but every attempt that they try fails. Drac and the gang then go to Camp Winnepacaca, Drac's childhood summer camp, only to sneak away after Drac finds out that the camp has become much safer. Drac attempts to hurl Dennis from a tall, unstable tower to pressure the boy's transformation into a bat, but he does not transform and Drac flies down and rescues him at the last second.
However, Johnny then discovers a video of Dennis falling that was filmed by the campers, and he and a furious Mavis go back to Transylvania, with Drac and his friends reaching the hotel at the same time. Mavis confronts her father for putting Dennis in grave danger and failing to accept him as a human, and says that they will move out of the hotel after Dennis's birthday party.
The next day, Vlad arrives with his monstrous bat-like servant Bela, and meets Dennis for the first time. Vlad believes that fear will cause Dennis' fangs to sprout and possesses a stage performer dressed as Dennis' favorite TV monster Kakie to scare him, but Drac shields his frightened grandson at the last moment, breaks Vlad's hold over the performer. Mavis finds out that Drac planned the ruse, and while the family argues about whether or not Dennis can be happy in California, he sadly flees the hotel and enters the forest with Wayne and Wanda's daughter Winnie, who has a crush on him, in tow.
Irritated with Vlad, Johnny and his family expose themselves, and Vlad is outraged that Drac has accepted humans. Upon hearing that Dennis is a human, Bela attacks him and Winnie in their treehouse. When Bela injures Winnie and threatens to destroy the hotel, Dennis's anger causes him to instantly grow his fangs and develop his vampire abilities, and he bashes up Bela. A furious but defeated Bela calls his giant-bat minions, but Drac, Johnny, Mavis, Dennis, and the rest of the monsters team up to defeat Bela's minions and drive them away, while Bela is shrunk by Vlad, who has been won over by Drac's claim that humans now coexist peacefully. With Dennis finally embracing his vampire abilities, Johnny and Mavis decide to continue raising him in Transylvania, and they resume the party with his friends and family.
Puppy![]
In this short film, Dennis asks his parents Mavis and Johnny for a puppy, but they were initially hesitant about it because of the challenges of owning one, which saddens him. Later on, his grandfather Count Dracula eventually gets to know about Dennis' desire to own a puppy, which Drac was reluctant about, but with some puppy eyes from his grandson, it made him a decision.
Sometime later, Drac eventually bought a very excitable giant black puppy for his grandson Dennis, who was very happy about the huge canine whom he named as "Tinkles" (derived from when Tinkles himself urinated at Mavis' living room).
When Mavis and Dennis went out of Hotel Transylvania for him to attend school, they left Tinkles to be taken care of by Drac, where chaos would later ensue. After she and her son arrived back at the hotel, where Dennis remarked that he misses Tinkles while still at school, the mother and son were shocked to see that the canine himself has caused a disaster at the reception area (just after seeing the Bones family).

Appearance[]
Dennis is a small boy with curly, striking red hair and blue eyes, a combination of genes he inherited from both his parents. He is dressed in a sports jersey (with the number "4" on it in Hotel Transylvania 2) and shorts similar to Johnny. According to creators, Dennis inherited Mavis's blue eyes and pale skin and Johnny's bright hair. After manifesting his vampire traits, his baby canine teeth fell out to reveal his adult teeth as vampire fangs.
Personality[]
Dennis is outwardly portrayed as being optimistic and childish such as any child his age. He appears to have a fairly similar temperament to Johnathan: easygoing, insouciant, and exuberant in most scenarios. Aside from his high-spirited demeanor, Dennis has substantiated noticeable signs of maturity for his age - even as a five-year-old he finds himself too old for any childish needs Mavis attempts to provide him with. Overall, he is rather naïve about certain things; he expressed a large amount of naivety when he lacked any sort of monstrous abilities. Initially, Dennis is unaware that his apparent lack of vampire skills was an immense problem and would impact him negatively; when he is exposed to the realities of the world, Dennis began taking this fact more seriously, attempting to become a vampire in order to remain at Hotel Transylvania.
Powers and Abilities[]
Dennis displays his vampiric powers whilst beating up Bela.
Dennis turns to be half-human and half-vampire. He has vampiric powers that manifest when he needs to save the day, such as when he saves Winnie from his grandfather's servant, Bela. Likewise, Dennis seems very intelligent and mature for his age, and seems to have a better understanding of what's going on around than the adults think — he's also capable of buckling himself in and cutting avocadoes open on his own.
Trivia[]
- Dennis bears a striking resemblance to Merida's triplet brothers Harris, Hamish, and Hubert from the Disney/Pixar movie Brave.
- He was born on Friday The 13th just like Jason Voorhees, but unlike Jason, Dennis isn't deformed and evil.
