Look, Alex, I know fighting isn't your thing, and you should avoid fighting when you can, but sometimes you can't, okay? You showed real strength of character. You always do. We don't agree on everything, but we can agree on that. Proud of you, pal.
~ Bill to Alex

Deputy Standall is a reccuring character in the Netflix show 13 Reasons Why. He is the deputy of the police force of a town named Liberty, the setting of the show. He is the father of Alex Standall, one of the main characters of the show. He is a minor character in seasons 1 and 2 and a major character in the third.

He was portrayed by Mark Pellegrino.

Biography

Season One

In Season One Deputy Standall prevents Alex from being interviewed in the deposition, believing him to have nothing to do with Hannah Baker's suicide. Alex steals his father's gun and shoots himself in the head with it. He goes to hospital where he is treated and survives.

Season Two

In season two, Alex comes out the hospital with a crippled leg. Deputy Standall encourages Alex to try and become able to live "normally" again, out of a feeling that he is responsible for Alex's condition due to the fact it was his gun Alex used.

At Alex's birthday party, Alex tells Zach to leave after he lies to his mum about where he is. Deputy Standall encourages Zach to stay but he respects Alex's wishes.

Alex goes to an arcade machine with guns in it much to his father's alarm, who comes to him and restrains him from the machine.

Season Three

Deputy Standall is involved with the investigation of Bryce Walker's murder. The events of the season are narrated by Ani Achola as she is telling them to Deputy Standall.

When Zach Dempsey comes to see Deputy Standall to confess that he murdered Bryce after being him up on the town's navy pier, he informs Zach that Bryce's body was found with water in his lungs, meaning Bryce died of drowning, not beatings and so Zach was not the killer.

Deputy Standall works out from his wife's car, that Alex drove to the navy pier and murdered Bryce. Ani tells him that Montgomery De La Cruz was the true murderer to which Deputy Standall responds that Cruz was murdered in his jail cell (which he was in after being arrested for raping Tyler Down) that morning. Ani tells Deputy Standall that something that connects Monty to the scene can be found in his school locker and persuades him to take cops to look into it, find it and have Monty convicted of Bryce's murder to save Alex. Deputy Standall does so. The object turns out to be a tape addressed to Jessica Davis, with Bryce's blood on it.

Deputy Standall is last seen burning Alex's clothing from the night he killed Bryce, to cover up the truth.

Season Four

Clay and Tony starts to notice Tyler has been spending an usual amount of time with the Deputy's most notably Deputy Standall. Deputy Standall for instance would either talk to Tony when Tony was trying to check up on Tyler to see if he was okay as Tyler was being pulled out of class to go to the counselor office, as well as being picked up by Deputy Standall in the Car from a School Dance Party for Valentines.

On the later on, Deputy Standall has checked upon Alex after he went back to his Camping Tent being concerned for how he seemed off he asked if he was okay and Alex said he drowned and cannot stop thinking about the constant guilt for murdering Bryce Walker. Deputy Standall asks if he is okay, and Alex tries to brush the situation off. Reasonably concerned he tries to calm down his son Alex.

Deputy Standall has helped a lot of the Baker's Dozen a lot throughout the time, such as asking Tony to bring some books to Tyler for him, asking Justin Foley if he needs to call Clay's Parents to get a ride home and spend the rest of the time off after informing Justin Foley about the News with the death of Foley's mother, Deputy Standall handling through some of Clay's criminal actions as "Percy" throughout the story, and encouraging Alex Standall to go to College.

Overall, he has been a supportive father for Standall and has been there for Alex's friends. He went from warning Standall for driving really fast (which was the time Alex, Zach, and Justin kidnapped Clay Jensen and stole his bike) all the way to literally risking his whole job to keep Alex Standall from going to jail for murder and covering it up by framing Montgomery de la Cruz. He even said at some point where he doesn't know what is right every single time he gets older, so his actions are corrupting for his job that is supposed to be serving the law while at the same time he is trying to be there for his son and his friends.
