“ | You just asked me why. Pretty simple, really. The way I figure it, any man who goes through God-knows-what to find his "old lady," — does not deserve to die at the end of a rope. | „ |

“ | We're not goin' back. The Colonel is batsh*t crazy. Holy war? Genocide? I mean, what the f**k is that? | „ |
~ Kouri growing disillusioned of Garret's so-called "Holy War". |
Derrick Kouri is a major character in the 2019 video game Days Gone. He is a member of the Deschutes County Militia, who served as Colonel Matthew Garret's second-in-command over the events of the game.
However, after Garret's descent to madness, following the tragic death of Arturo Jiminez at the hands of Wade Taylor, Kouri and the rest of his subordinates would desert the Colonel and the Militia, as a whole, and leave Oregon to visit Reno, Nevada.
Kouri is voiced by Phil Morris.
Appearance[]
Kouri is a middle-aged man of average height in his late-40s, who has a bald head and brown eyes. His outfit consists of a black coat, green buttoned shirt, and a grey tunic. He wears brown pants with camouflage patterns and black boots. He is seen wearing a red DCM armband with the U.S. Military Rank insignia of a Captain, before removing it after his desertion from the militia and the Colonel.
In his initial meeting with Deacon, he is seen wearing the Mongrels' ring that he took from Sarah during her recruitment, before giving it to him during the events of Ascending from the Underworld.
Personality[]
Kouri is mostly known for his levelheadedness, who does not act on impulse, during his term as Garret's second-in-command, that is before his descent to insanity, where he exhibited a deserting attitude towards the Militia, growing disillusioned for what the Militia's goals had become. His said personality and his commonality with Deacon led to the latter being saved by the psychologically fractured Colonel from being hanged.
Background[]
Past[]
Although very little is known about Kouri's early years, he was born in the early 1970s and raised in the Western part of the country. He joined the American Air Force as an adult and spent more than ten years as a member of the Strategic Air Command.
Later, he ran across Karie, and the two soon fell in love and wed for twelve years. They had two daughters together.
Kouri was on vacation on the west coast during the start of the epidemic and was able to get hourly updates from all throughout the country until SATCOM (satellite communications) broke down. Prior to joining the Deschutes County Militia, Kouri was stationed at the Silver Lake Refugee Camp until it was overrun. Kouri managed to flee with few survivors.
Days Gone[]
One of the militia members, Glen Russell, takes Deacon to Kouri at their outpost after Deacon saves two of them from a Rager Bear. Deacon observes Kouri wearing the ring he gave Sarah the last time they spoke after they are introduced. Deacon doesn't comment on this, though, and continues to be cordial with the captain. Deacon claims he wants to join the militia, which is conspicuously deficient in disciplined men.
Deacon is given the responsibility of assisting Kouri in finding Vasquez, a renegade soldier, after Kouri is extremely pleased with his skills. In addition to acknowledging Deacon as a veteran, Kouri is impressed by Deacon's tracking abilities.
Kouri immediately recommends Colonel Garret to hire Deacon for his services. The two take a journey to Crater Lake, where Garret has positioned his primary soldiers. He shares some private recollections with Deacon; Deacon does not respond. Kouri then drives him to the base where he will be formally conscripted.
Lately, after Jiminez's death from Taylor, Kouri would soon witness Garret's immediate descent to insanity and madness, and later hatched a plan to save Deacon from being hanged after he was falsely accused by Garret, thanks to Skizzo's machinations. After revealing his true motivations of saving Deacon from the unhinged Colonel, Kouri and his Militia defectors would later leave Oregon en route to Reno, making them AWOL.
Kouri's disappearance after the Militia's defeat made Russell the new camp leader of Diamond Lake, which is now a survivor camp.
Trivia[]
- Over ten years before Kouri enlisted in the US Air Force, in 1992, Strategic Air Command was abolished. It's probable that SAC and its successor, Air Force Global Strike Command, were mixed up by the programmers of the game.
