Private Desmond "Des" Wilmot is a supporting character in the 2021 video game Call of Duty: Vanguard.

He was a member of the Australian contingent of the British Army, and fought against the Nazi Party in Tobruk and the Egyptian railway halt in El Alamein. He ultimately met his death while holding against the Nazis for air support, and was honored by his friend Lucas Riggs following the battle.

He was voiced and motion captured by Nikolai Nikolaeff.

Background[]

Desmond "Des" Wilmot was born in Australia around the 1900s, and was conscripted into the British Eighth Army during the Second World War. Sent to Egypt, Des was part of the Australian contingent dubbed "rats" to sabotage German vehicles, and befriended Lucas Riggs and "Bluey" Smith. Despite fighting against the Axis Powers, Wilmot and the Australian division were looked down upon by the British, most notably Major Henry Hamms since they were seen as expendable and insubordinate.

The Rats of Tobruk[]

With the British and Australian armies running out of munitions, the demolition team under Major Hamms is tasked with sabotaging German vehicles to gather supplies. The major foils the ambush by detonating the explosives prematurely against an enemy tank, forcing the group to fight the surviving Nazis. When noticing another truck, Wilmot shoots the tires as it attempts to escape, and Hamms orders him, Riggs and Robert Jacobs to go after it for supplies. Finding the truck, they notice one of the German officers is missing and search for him. The trio find a nearby camp and find intel that Nazi General Erwin Rommel was here, and decide to follow it to a nearby outpost.

After evading Nazi patrols to the outpost, they find a German depot and more intel containing a picture of Rommel with Second Lieutenant Hermann Freisinger. Wilmot and Riggs decide to attack the depot by destroying the Germans' munitions and damaged tanks, and battle against a Stuka plane before leaving. Despite gathering useful intel for the British, Hamms has Wilmot and Riggs imprisoned for insubordination.

El Alamein[]

While riding a friendly tank with his allies in El Alamein, Des reveals that he stole Hamms' cantina of alcohol before the group are attacked by the Nazis. Fighting the enemy at the Egyptian railway halt, the allies suffer great casualties and Hamms orders his men to hold the line. Des and Riggs decide to disobey orders to retake the hill, and Jacobs agrees before giving them a flare to signal their allies. After battling their way to the hill, the duo fight against the Nazis until they receive air support. Des is killed during the fight against the enemy tanks, and is mourned by his friend after the battle is over. Lucas is then arrested after punching Hamms for disrespecting his fallen comrades by removing the Australian flag, and is arrested by British soldiers for his actions.
