That… felt… good!
~ Desmond finding joy in his life after killing a Bliblie.

Desmond is the titular deuteragonist of the Smiling Friends episode "Desmond's Big Day Out." He is a depressed, suicidal man and the first ever verified customer of Smiling Friends Inc., in which the friends try to stop him from killing himself and find joy in life.

He eventually succeeds in finding happiness after discovering he liked to kill Bliblies, prompting him to start his own pest control company called "Desmond's Bliblie Control," now a charismatic businessman.

He was voiced by Mike Stoklasa.

Appearance[]

Depressed[]

Desmond initially appeared with a large, bulbous head with deeply etched wrinkles, pale skin mottled with age spots, and droopy, heavy-lidded green eyes. He had a slouched posture and held an oversized revolver against his temple at all times.

He was bald on top, with thin, wispy hair remaining on the sides, and his double chin blended into his thick neck. His torso was corpulent, with a noticeable potbelly pushing out from beneath a tight, stained, short-sleeved brown polo shirt with a dark stripe that barely fit over his rotund frame. He wore a pair of light blue and white striped boxer shorts that hung loosely around his legs, and walked barefoot.

CEO[]

After finding his calling in life, his face became much cleaner, losing all of the wrinkles and blotches he had previously. He now sports a full set of neat, brown hair combed to the side, and his eyebrows grew in. He also wears a formal purple suit, matching pants, a white shirt, and a yellow tie.

Personality[]

That's exactly it. Are the best parts of life just momentary distractions to keep yourself busy so you don't think about the harsh realities of life for a second? I can ride roller coasters, meet new friends, and spend time with my family all day long. It doesn't change the fact that the sun is just gonna explode, and all this was for nothing.
~ Desmond's speech that crushes Pim.

Desmond starts as a deeply depressed, wholly nihilistic man at the end of his rope, invariably holding a revolver to his head for the entire episode. He would have likely ended his life had the Smiling Friends not arrived on time, with Charlie calling him a "lost cause." This is befitting of his unhygienic and slovenly appearance, and his messy, even dilapidated bedroom.

Desmond thought of life's pleasures as nothing more than temporary escapes from existence's bitter realities and eventual end. Even during his "big day out," the scarce activities he did enjoy were only like fleeting blips of happiness, not fulfillment. Notwithstanding his bleakness, which effectively insulted the endlessly optimistic Pim's efforts and shut him down by the end, Desmond is an affable and polite person who genuinely gave the Smiling Friends a chance and even admitted that Dave Land was somewhat enjoyable. However, he always spoke in a dull, monotone voice. He also had a dark, sardonic side, bluntly stating he'd shoot himself in front of them if they failed, and implying that Pim's defective family could only make him want to die more.

Huh. I guess Desmond just needed to find a purpose in life.
~ Charlie on Desmond.

Everything changes after he kills a Bliblie, as this act brings him out of his funk and gives him unexpected purpose in life, which is apparently all he needed, as recognized by Charlie. He turns into a confident, charismatic entrepreneur who founds a pest control company about which he is passionate, and delivers hammy commercials. He also cleans up his appearance with white teeth, smoother skin, brown hair, and a fancy suit. Desmond appears to take sadistic delight in creatively killing Bliblies, including stabbing, smashing, and burning them.

Biography[]

Mr. Boss gets a call from a woman saying her son has been feeling "a bit mopey lately," and asks Pim and Charlie to visit him. When they arrive, his mother greets them, and the childish decorations by his bedroom door make them think her son is a little kid; however, when Pim and Charlie go into Desmond's room, they're shocked to see he's actually a grown man holding a gun to his head. Desmond explains how he became depressed after the abandonment by his wife and kids and the death of his beloved dog, who literally died of a "broken heart." They try to stop Desmond from hurting himself, and even though Charlie is doubtful, Pim and Charlie agree to cheer him up.

First, they visit Pim's family, but it goes terribly because everyone starts fighting. Next, they go to a party hoping Desmond can make friends, but Pim accidentally shows him how cruel people can be. That doesn't work, so they go to the Dave Land theme park, and while Desmond says he had a little fun, he points out that happiness never lasts. Desmond then gives a dark speech to Pim and Charlie, saying that life has no meaning and people only chase temporary fun to avoid how terrible reality is. This makes Pim go mute and start questioning everything.

The three return to the office and find it invaded by Bliblies, with Allan tied to a cross. When a Blibie sees Desmond and runs at him, Desmond pulls out his gun and shoots it. Desmond realizes this made him feel good, and he later starts running his own pest control business as a happy, confident owner, making Charlie realize he just needed to find his purpose in life. He also apparently killed the rest of the Bliblies in the Smiling Friends building, saving Allan, which Glep cleans up.

Quotes[]

Is this supposed to make me not want to kill myself?
~ Desmond after seeing Pim's rambunctious family.
Notice your food has gone missing? Hearing scratches in the walls? Finding mysterious purple shit pellets? You, my friend, may have a Bliblie infestation! Luckily for you, there's Desmond's Bliblie Control! We'll kill em all for you! Shoot em, stab em, smash em, set em on fire! We'll take control… Bliblie Control! Call now!
~ Desmond in his commercial.

Trivia[]

  • Desmond's chest scar could imply that he had open heart surgery.
  • The gun he points to his head appears to be a Smith & Wesson 500.
    • Considering he was able to hold the gun (which weighs close to 5 pounds when fully loaded) up to his head with one hand for an entire day without any signs of tiring, Desmond seems to be rather strong. He also swiftly lands a headshot on a Bliblie charging at him while using one hand without experiencing any recoil.
  • His charisma and appearance as CEO, as well as his company advertisement, are a reference to the character Jimmy McGill/Saul Goodman from Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul.
  • Desmond is mentioned at the start of "Charlie Dies and Doesn't Come Back" when Charlie and Pim argue. Pim brings up Desmond as an example of a time when Charlie was being negative and Pim had to push him to help.
  • During his trip to Dave Land, Desmond wore a mint green t-shirt with Dave's face on it.
