Devils never cry.
~ Devil May Cry's motto.
Oh, speaking of a kind devil, he finally decided on a name for his shop. Wanna know the name? Devil May Cry.
~ Lady describing how Dante named his business.

Devil May Cry are the titular main protagonists of the video game franchise of the same name.

They are a paranormal investigation agency founded by Dante, consisting of a group of demon hunters and their allies. Over the course of the series, Devil May Cry's leadership and employees shift, with Dante's protégé Nero eventually taking over the business at the end of Devil May Cry 5.

History[]

Origin[]

After spending years working as a mercenary for various criminals while under the alias "Tony Redgrave", Dante, son of the Legendary Dark Knight Sparda, eventually decided to start his own shop where he could hunt down demons for money, with the ultimate goal of tracking down the demon that murdered his mother Eva.

Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening[]

In his late teens, Dante opens up his business but struggles to decide on a name. One evening, a mysterious man named Arkham invites Dante to the demonic tower known as Temen-ni-gru, and claims to have been sent by Dante's twin brother Vergil. After the man leaves, Dante is ambushed by a horde of demons, who ransack his shop and eventually destroy the building.

After defeating Arkham with the help of his daughter Lady, Dante duels Vergil, culminating in Vergil casting himself into the Demon World. Dante cries over losing his brother, and when Lady notices, Dante insists that, "Devils never cry." Lady responds:

Maybe somewhere out there, even a devil may cry when he loses a loved one.
~ Lady.

This statement inspires Dante. Upon rebuilding his shop, he christens it with the name "Devil May Cry" and begins accepting missions.

Devil May Cry[]

A decade later, Dante continues to run Devil May Cry by himself, with Lady occasionally giving him jobs. One night, a mysterious woman named Trish enters his shop and offers to guide him to the Demon King Mundus on Mallet Island. Intrigued, Dante accepts the mission and follows Trish to the island.

There, Dante discovers that Mundus was behind his mother's murder, and that Trish is actually Mundus' creation sent to lure him into trap. However, after Dante saves her life, Trish turns against Mundus and she and Dante take down the Demon King together.

When Dante returns to Devil May Cry, he hires Trish as his new sidekick and renames the place "Devil Never Cry", though the name eventually reverts back to Devil May Cry later on.

Devil May Cry 4[]

Several years later, Lady hires Dante and Trish to investigate a cult worshipping Sparda on the island of Fortuna. There, they discover that their leader, Sanctus, has been ordering his men to be transformed into artificial demons by a mad alchemist named Agnus in order to amass an army for world domination. Dante also discovers Nero, an orphan resembling him that also possesses demonic powers.

After defeating Sanctus, Dante gifts Nero the Yamato and begins training him to be a demon hunter.

Devil May Cry 5[]

Several years later, Dante has expanded Devil May Cry's operations with the help of Nero and his girlfriend Kyrie. They now have a benefactor named Morrison and have hired Agnus' daughter, Nico Goldstein, for technical support.

Dante is contracted by a mysterious man named V to hunt down a demon named Urizen, who has unleashed the monstrous Qliphoth Tree onto Dante's hometown of Red Grave City. Upon Urizen's defeat, V stabs him and recombines into Vergil, who had survived his previous encounter with Dante by splitting himself in two.

Nero learns that Vergil is his father and puts a stop to Dante and Vergil's fighting, convincing them to join forces to stop the Qliphoth from consuming the world. Vergil joins his brother and travels to the Demon World to cut down the Qliphoth at its roots and continue fighting demons from the rest of the eternity, unknowingly becoming the final member of Devil May Cry in the process.

After Dante and Vergil's disappearance, Morrison obtains ownership of the Devil May Cry shop, while Nero becomes their new de facto leader.
