Dieter is a one of the two tritagonists (alongside Wolfgang Grimmer) of the manga and anime series Monster. He is a young boy who has been abused by his caretaker Mr. Hartmann, a former official at 511 Kinderheim, who is trying to create another Johan Liebert. He is rescued by Dr. Tenma and goes with him on his journey, seeing Tenma as a father figure.
He was voiced by Junko Takeuchi in Japanese and by Laura Bailey in English.
History[]
He's first seen at Hartmann's house, and has a rather unsettling appearance due to the abuse. He likes soccer but believes the world is a dark place, which Hartmann has told him. Tenma feels bad for him and buys him a soccer ball, but when he returns Dieter is unconscious and his shoulder has been dislocated. Tenma accuses Hartmann of doing this, but Hartmann reports him to the police. Tenma decides to take Dieter to the hospital, but Hartmann sneaks in and abducts Dieter, taking him to the ruins of the Kinderheim orphanage and trying to brainwash the boy again. However, Tenma encourages Dieter to walk away from Hartmann and go with him, and he does.
Tenma tries to leave Dieter with his friend Dr. Schumann, but Schumann is alarmed when Tenma states that he must kill someone, and asks Dieter to go with Tenma, hoping Dieter's influence will stop Tenma from killing Johan or anyone else. Dieter is later caught up in a Neo-Nazi plot to set the Turkish quarter on fire, and helps foil the plot by using a carpet to extinguish the flames.
He's later seen in Munich where he meets a boy who has been corrupted by Johan, but he reaches out to the boy and breaks the psychological conditioning Johan has placed him under. However, the boy then tells Dieter that Johan expects to be killed by Tenma soon, and Dieter becomes upset and asks Dr Reichwein to find Tenma and stop him.
He later becomes close friends with Nina and they help Lipsky, Franz Bonaparta's estranged son, get over being disowned by him and make good memories together. During the climax he goes into hiding for his own protection while Tenma and Nina confront Johan in Ruhenheim.
