~ Petrenko to Reznov. |
“ | Dimitri Petrenko was one of the bravest men I had ever known. He fought by my side from the siege of Stalingrad to the fall of Berlin. The wounds he sustained ensuring our victory should have earned him a hero's welcome to Russia. But Stalin had little need for heroes. Dimitri Petrenko was a hero, he deserved a hero's death. Instead of giving his life for the glory of the Motherland, he died for nothing, like an animal... He should have died in Berlin. | „ |

Petrenko and the army were tasked with defending Stalingrad, but the unit were eliminated by the Nazis, whom proceeded to search for survivors. Dimitri survived the Red Square massacre, and played dead while the Nazi soldiers came and shot survivors. While crawling through, he came across Viktor Reznov, who tells him he needs his help to kill General Heinrich Amsel in order to avenge their fallen comrades from the massacre at the fountain, as he can't due to his losing his finger. Dimitri and Reznov journey through the area, and manage to kill a Nazi sniper from across a building. Afterward, Dimitri and Reznov meet up with Soviet soldiers, and provide sniper support when the others ambush the Nazis.
After giving support, Reznov and Dimitri move to assassinate Amsel, who is attempting to escape from the area. Dimitri succeeds in killing the general, and Reznov congratulates him on his marksmanship. The two are attacked by a squad of Nazi soldiers, who storm the building to kill them. Dimitri and Reznov escape from the building, jumping into the river upon escaping form the Wehrmacht soldiers.
Three years later in the German countryside, Dimitri was captured and taken into a house by three Nazi soldiers. While the soldiers are conversing and searching Dimitri's fallen comrades, Petrenko attempts to reach for a rifle before attacked by a Nazi soldier. Before they execute him, a T-34 tank blows a hole into the rifle, and Reznov reunite with Dimitri. In July and August, Dimitri was assigned to the Soviet Occupation Forces in Berlin, and was later assigned to "Unit 45" with Reznov, who was promoted to captain. The unit was under the command of General Nikita Dragovich, who Reznov tells his men not to trust since he left his men die at the Red Square massacre. Dragovich and his right hand, Lev Kravchenko, order the unit to capture Nazi scientist Friedrich Steiner and secure a shipment of a toxic nerve gas called Nova 6.
Reznov and his men secure Steiner, who takes them to the ship and speaks of how he created the nova gas. Wanting to see the gas' effect, Dragovich and Kravchenko betrayed Dimtri and his men, and used them as test subjects. Dimitri and a couple of men died a slow painful death from the gas, as Reznov saw his death. Upon seeing this, Reznov vowed to kill Dragovich, Kravchenko and Steiner to avenge his fallen comrade, leading him to sabotage Alex Mason's brainwashing. Reznov's succeeded in his goal as Dragovich, Kravchenko and Steiner were killed, thus avenging Dimitri's death.
