Dion Fortune is a major character in the A Certain Magical Index franchise.
She is a former member of the Golden Dawn however after her death, she was recreated by Coronzon as per her anti-Crowley measures, though after defecting and being saved by Hamazura Shiage, she made a deal with Queen Elizard to become the next Archbishop of Church of England and Necessarius. Elizard agreed on the notice that Karasuma Fran and Villian keeps an eye on her.
She is voiced by Rika Tachibana in Japanese.
Appearance[]
Dion appears as a short, skinny girl with short red hair, white skin and a small build. She wears frilly white dress with pink accents and the star decorations with exposed arms, and purple leggings and thick soled shoes.
Personality[]
Dion Fortune seems to think highly of herself going as far as calling herself "the great Dion Fortune", she has a considerable amount of pride and hates being pitied against. Ironically when using her magic she herself doesn't know what type of magic will come out, however she did claim through the use of her magic that old and inefficient traditions and rebuilds them into a smarter new spell.
Dion has been recreated by Coronzon using 78 Tarot Cards as such when Aleister released all the recreated Golden Dawn magicians, Dion has also been dissolved into Tarot Cards. However thanks to Hamazura keeping those cards safe with him, she has been recreated once again, as Hamazura went as far as to side with Coronzon to bring her back. Due to Hamazura actions Dion viewed him as her savior as she had a happy reunion with Hamazura. This would prove crucial later, as seen when after Dion has become the new Archbishop, she hijacked Qliphah Puzzle 545 to speak with Board Chairman Accelerator to save Hamazura life, going as far as to threaten the Board Chairman if Hamazura wasn't saved after his experience in Operation Handcuffs.
At some point in the past Dion has angered Mina Mathers and Mina responded by attacking her with her phantom cats, ever since that point Dion has been afraid of Mina and even seeing a cat cripples her with fear as she has been so traumatized that she sees cats as tigers. Currently because Mina is an AI, when Dion first laid eyes on Aneri she even mistook the AI for Mina herself becoming so terrified.
After the fall of Kamijou no Touma, Queen Elizard approaches Dion who is still in the UK, Elizard questions Dion why didn't she go with Hamazura's group, Dion answers the Queen that she needs an Archbishop now that Coronzon is no more which Elizard agrees however she is not above fearing that Dion will betray them like Coronzon did because she is originally made by Coronzon, however Dion assures Elizard that she wants to protect England and that she was originally born in England, Elizard eventually agrees that she becomes the new Archbishop however her daughter Villian and Karasuma Fran will keep an eye on her, Before leaving Dion shows Elizard that she has acquired a new phone with Aneri installed in it to remember Hamazura. She also wants to correct all the corrupt of what Coronzon did when she was the Archbishop.
Dion doesn't know Japanese and always speaks in English as such when talking to Hamazura he either has Niang-Niang and Nephthys to translate what she is saying or he could use Aneri to understand her.
Biography[]
Dion Fortune was not a member of the original Golden Dawn, but joined its remnants in 1919, under the courteous protection of Mina Mathers. During her time in the cabal, she compiled grimoires which were beyond what Golden Dawn's defenses could handle, with some magicians in the cabal speculating that their teachings moved beyond what the original ones had covered. Aside from traditional magical activities and writing grimoires, Dion also contributed to an occult magazine, worked on correspondence education and gave lectures. At one point, during some turf wars within the cabal, Dion angered Mina and was subjected to a harsh magical attack by her, with her house being surrounded by black cats, her back being sliced open by the cats' claws, and Dion even seeing phantom black cats the size of tigers. Dion was considerably traumatized by the attack.
At some point after her death, Dion Fortune was reproduced along with other members of the Golden Dawn by Coronzon, through the application of Tarot-based grimoires, as part of her anti-Crowley countermeasures.

Golden-style Magic: As a member of the Golden Dawn, Dion have considerable amount of knowledge in Golden-Style Magic as seen when she made use of the essence of her fellow recreations, in an original spell bearing the full name of the cabal, which blocked the signal to Scotland, with the cards forming a vortex visible from space. this spell was able to stop Coronzon's attempt to hijack the UK's magical system with the Honours of Scotland, blocking the signal sent to Scotland through the ley lines.
Randomized Magic: Dion Fortune specializes in randomized magic. Claiming to use up old and inefficient traditions to rebuild them as a smarter new spell, but she actually doesn't know what kind of magic will result from her method. The grimoires she compiled were apparently beyond what the defenses of the Golden Dawn remnants could handle and some cabal magicians speculated their teachings might have moved beyond what the original ones covered.
Archetype Processor: Dion main magic using the black box she carries around, its actually a Spiritual Item for Infinite Self-Circulation of Information the black box that she carries with her (which can also float above her hand). After inserting an item of magic, such as a Rose Cross Medal, into the box and closing the lid as if to chew it up, she speaks the command; "Translate, simplify, and create anew!!". The spell is transformed and corrupted within the box, such that when the box is opened, even she cannot predict what kind of magic will come out. In addition to transforming her own magic, it can also be used to swallow, scramble and distort the forms of enemy spells and items, such that they can't be used in their intended fashion as seen when she uses the black box to swallow the crystal ball whole which was attacking Hamazura, the crystal ball then would not regain its original form. When using Rose Cross Medal as the item put in the box the following effects it has produced:
- A mass of flames spewing from the box, used like a booster to propel with thrust or alter trajectory, and was also raised like hammer.
- Something like translucent umbrella, used to deflect a shockwave spear.
- An unknown attack, accompanied by light and causing something to spiral around the center of the target's chest, capable of deflecting a wax seal attack from the reproduced Westcott amplified by Annie Horniman.
Tarot Proficiency: Dion is extremely proficient in utilizing Tarot Cards and has information about them as seen when she was explaining how Tarot Cards works, she also made use of the cards combined with the Golden-Style Magic and the recreated Golden Dawn in an original spell, invoked in English and bearing the cabal's full name; the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn.

High Intelligence: Dion is shown to be extremely intelligent as a member of the Golden Dawn. The unpredictability from the random phenomena (which not even Waite's cards can fully predict) is Dion's greatest weapon, intended to bring down enemy strategy and tactics, ruining calculations and plans made in advance through unexpected actions, and bringing chaos to the battlefield. While Dion has found victory using her method in the past, it is bad against beings beyond a certain threshold of power, who cannot be defeated with nothing more than luck and the use of probability.
Overwhelming Influence & Authority: As the current Archbishop of Necessarius, she has authority over the England Church and even communicate with extremely important people such as Board Chairman Accelerator. As seen when she was discussing with him the Transcendents problems. or she can hijack an artificial demon such as Qliphah Puzzle 545 to communicate with Accelerator she warns him not to let Hamazura die after he was critically injured and have him taken to a hospital to get treated.
