I am Doctor Fate, sorcerer, agent of the Lords of Order, defender against darkness and chaos, but even my powers cannot defeat you.
~ Doctor Fate to Sabbac.
You believe you are not a worthy champion because the wizards did not choose you. But Fate does not make mistakes. Neither did your son.
~ Doctor Fate to Black Adam.

Kent Nelson, also known as Doctor Fate, is one of the three deuteragonists (alongside Hawkman and Adrianna Tomaz) of the 2022 DC Extended Universe film Black Adam.

He was a kind academic and one of the founding members of the Justice Society with his magical abilities and the Helmet of Fate, he used to transform into the powerful mystical sorcerer known as Doctor Fate. Traveling to Kahndaq with the team to stop Black Adam, Doctor Fate would speak with him on the potential fate that was for the country. When Sabbac attempted to take control and release the legions of Hell, Fate sacrificed himself and encouraged Black Adam to become Kahndaq's hero.

He was portrayed by the legendary Pierce Brosnan, who also played James Bond in GoldenEye, Tomorrow Never Dies, The World is Not Enough, and Die Another Day, Thomas Crown in The Thomas Crown Affair, and Chiron in Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief.

Biography[]

Background[]

Kent Nelson was born around the 1920s to unnamed parents in England, and during the height of World War II, knew of the fates that held of the soldiers that were sent off.

Becoming Doctor Fate[]

At some point in his adulthood, Nelson encountered the mystical being Nabu, who gave him the Helmet of Fate, granting him magical abilities and the title "Doctor Fate". Staying with Nabu and the Lords of Order, Kent spent his time learning spells and becoming familiar with the helmet allowing him to see potential futures. After his training, Doctor Fate protected the world from numerous demons, and later married a woman named Inza. At some point during his heroics, Fate met the heroes Hawkman and Atom Smasher, and co-founded the Justice Society to stop threats. However, the group broke ways for unknown reasons, and Kent returned to the order to learn how to not rely on the helmet.

Black Adam[]

Personality[]

Kent Nelson is a kind man. Despite the nature of his work in combatting the world's evils, he has not let them jade him as when conversing with Teth-Adam, Nelson described the world as "glorious". Doctor Fate is able to forgo all emotion to envision future outcomes, conjure terrifying illusions and bewitch his opponents with power that outmatches even the powers of the gods.

Powers and abilities[]

Powers[]

  • Helmet of Fate: The helmet granted the sorcerer numerous capabilities.
    • Precognition: By wearing the helmet, Nelson could see all potential futures, allowing him to predict what was coming before it did, and if necessary, give him a way to avert it.

Quotes[]

My vision has shown me the future. You have two choices: you can either be the destroyer of this world, or you can be its saviour. It's up to you.
~ Doctor Fate.
Teth-Adam, I know you can hear me. The battle your son was meant to fight is upon us. Now you are the only one who can defeat the demon Champion. You have the power to be the destroyer of this world. But you can also be its savior. You believe you are not a worthy champion because the wizards did not choose you. But Fate does not make mistakes. Neither did your son. We were wrong about you. The world doesn't always need a white knight. Don't you dare give up on us now. The world needs you.
~ Doctor Fate's last words to Black Adam, before his death.
