Experiment-1322: Doey the Doughman is the deuteragonist and final boss of Safe Haven, the fourth chapter of the 2021 indie horror video game Poppy Playtime.
He is one of the many experiments created by Playtime Co. as part of the Bigger Bodies Initiative, and considered the second most dangerous one of them all behind only the Prototype himself. He was based off the "Doey Dough" mascot released in the 1950s and its titular mascot. Following the Hour of Joy, Doey became the leader and guardian of Safe Haven, an area of the company where all the sapient and good toys are protected from the horrors waiting outside. Doey teams up with the Intruder and Poppy Playtime to defeat Harley Sawyer and the Prototype.
Unlike the other toys, Doey is a hybrid consisting of three children who clash for control over their body. The leader is Matthew Hallard, a calm and reasonable teenager, and he is joined by the young and fun-loving Jack Ayers. The last child to make up Doey is Kevin Barnes, a problem child with anger issues that proves to be Doey's undoing.
He was voiced by Michael Kovach, who also voiced Scientist in the same game, N in Murder Drones, Jax in The Amazing Digital Circus, Angel Dust in the Hazbin Hotel pilot, and Rocky Rickaby in Lackadaisy.
Appearance[]
Doey is a plump creature that, like his name suggests, is made out of multicolored dough made up of a clay-like substance. His head, neck and most of his torso are blue. Meanwhile, his left arm is orange, his right arm is yellow, and his legs are red: the three colors come together to form a pattern of three bendy arms reaching towards the center of his stomach. He has a simple black face and wears a blue bowler hat. Doey can grow numerous small, orange, needle-like teeth on occasion, as seen when he eats Pianosaurus and when Kevin starts taking control following Safe Haven's destruction.
Once Kevin hijacks control over Doey in a fit of rage, his body grows in size greatly, possessing an elongated face and a now quadrupedal stance. In addition to this, he has four additional arms on his back, all possessing disturbingly long fingers. Doey's maw has several of the previously mentioned sharp teeth and he has three greyish-blue figures sprouting from his mouth, representing Jack, Matthew and Kevin. Jack and Matthew's figures appear to be sad and trying to close Doey's mouth, while Kevin's appears enraged and has its arms outstretched, symbolizing Kevin being primarily responsible for Doey's personality of anger. Additionally, Doey has a tail that splits into three points, being lined with four smaller arms as well.
Personality[]
Doey is the first Bigger Bodies experiment seen to have multiple personalities, having been made from three children; Jack takes on the innocent and playful side of Doey, while Matthew presumably acts as the kindhearted and more mature personality. Due to Kevin, the third child, having a neurological condition translating into an aggressive nature when he was still a human, Doey also has a tendency to get frustrated and occasionally snap in certain situations, making him all sorts of unpredictable.
When the Prototype destroys the Safe Haven, killing most, if not all of the toys seeking refuge there, this is the final straw to which the three warring personalities’ shared grief overtook them, with each one trying to be the dominant personality of the body during the situation. Kevin's rage ultimately proved to him to be the strongest of the three, as he managed to take total control of Doey and tried to kill the player, blaming him and Poppy for what had happened. However, during Doey's death, Jack and Matthews’s personalities are able to resurface one last time, with Matthew lamenting his inability to save the toys of Safe Haven by not being a good nor smart enough leader, and Jack tearfully apologizing to the player for "his" (Kevin's) actions.
Biography[]
Background[]
The toy Doey was based on was the Play-Dough knockoff Doey Dough, released in the 1950s as Playtime's second major success after Poppy Playtime. The character proved so successful he became his own figurine toy separate from Doey Dough.
In the 1990s, as part of Harley Sawyer's Bigger Bodies Initiative, plans of making a Doey the Doughman experiment consisting of three children began. The first one was the fun-loving and energetic Jack Ayers, a young boy who loved Playtime's toys and won a trip to the company's factory after obtaining a ticket from a Doey toy. Unfortunately, tragedy would strike on the trip: Jack would somehow fall over the safety railing and into the bubbling vats of dough, killing him in a slow and agonising manner.
Doey's more mature and caring personality originates from the 15-year old Matthew Hallard, who was sent to Playcare orphanage shortly after the deaths of his parents. As one of the eldest orphans in Playcare, Matthew would be a role model to his younger peers, though he would also struggle to find a foster home. However, he also suffered from insecurities due to being unable to save his parents in the accident that took their lives. Thus, Playtime Co. would decide to select him for being transformed into a toy, seeing as his benevolent and outgoing personality made him a prime candidate to work at the company.
Doey's final belligerent and hot-headed personality originates from a young orphan named Kevin Barnes. Thanks to a neurological condition, Kevin was noted to be unusually aggressive, often picking fights with other kids and playing incredibly rough with his friends. Despite this, Kevin had excelled in all the other tests and as such, was shortlisted for conversion by Dr. Sawyer, despite protests from his colleagues.
Upon his conversion to a toy, Doey would endure many days and weeks of torture and mistreatment from the scientists, despite relative compliance to their terms, even developing great scepticism towards the politeness of others. One day, Jack's parents would be called in by Playtime Co. to meet their transformed son. Believing their son lived inside the toy, both George and Susan Ayers would attempt to communicate to Jack within Doey. However, they were unaware of Doey's psyche being composed of two other personalities, and unfortunately, this would lead to Doey's failure of recognizing them. The Kevin Barnes personality would therefore get triggered by Jack's parents attempting to calm him, believing them to be scientists trying to sweet talk him into compliance again, and would brutally kill them in a violent outburst. It's all but stated that this reaction was expected by the Playtime Co. scientists and they did this to eliminate Jack's parents, preventing the truth from being exposed.
After the Hour of Joy, Doey would attempt to leave Playtime Co. for the outside world. However, after realising many of his fellow toys would never be able to survive such a trip, Doey would decide to stay back in the factory, protecting his friends until he found a way to help them. Thus, Doey would found Safe Haven, creating a space for toys to live in peace without fear of the Prototype and his cronies. During this time, Doey would become allies with Poppy, becoming aligned in their opposition to the Prototype and their care for their fellow toys. One day, Poppy would mysteriously disappear and end up getting trapped in a case on the factory's upper floor. Doey, unaware of her whereabouts, would be forced to lead Safe Haven's toys alone.
Present[]
While trying to navigate a crumbling ledge, The Player falls directly into the cell of Pianosaurus, who immediately lunges at them only to be grabbed by a number of stretchy arms and pulled into the shadows. Emerging from the darkness alongside shattered pieces of Pianosaurus is The Player's mysterious helper: Doey the Doughman. He tells them to follow him, as he knows a way to a safe place on this level: the Safe Haven. Following Doey, The Player is led through the Prison Yard and bridged across gaps by his ability to re-shape his body however he likes. As they approach the haven, Doey goes off ahead of The Player, who is soon pulled into a corner by Poppy and a badly damaged Kissy out of the way of The Prototype's legs. The trio rush the rest of the way to the Safe Haven, a heavily fortified section of the facility with its own separate power grid, where the last of the non-aggressive toys have holed up under Doey's protection.
The Player is saved by Poppy and Kissy Missy and reach Safe Haven to finally learn Poppy’s plan: Poppy wants to burn down the factory, bringing The Prototype down with her. Despite being an effective plan where Poppy is the martyr, it also means that she wants to make sure no one gets out of Playtime alive. This means letting many innocent lives perish. Doey doesn’t agree with this plan, but most blindly follow Poppy, even though they don’t fully trust her. It turns out that Poppy knew about The Hour of Joy, making her disappearance far more questionable. This is confirmed both by The Doctor and the children in Safe Haven. Poppy hadn’t been seen since The Hour of Joy, meaning she left Doey to protect the other toys for a decade. What’s clear, however, is how much Doey cares for the other toys. To ensure everyone is safe, Doey gives The Player the primary objective to defeat the Doctor. The Player must first face Sawyer's minions before they can take him on, however. These include (in order) the Nightmare Critters, Yarnaby, and Baba Chops. Returning to Safe Haven, Poppy wants The Player to move on with her plan. The Player, alone, heads to the gas tanks, tasked to place explosives against the pipes housing lethal gas that will implode once it ignites. This is the plan to bring the factory down to defeat The Prototype and end the suffering once and for all.
“ | I'm sorry... I'm so sorry, So sorry. I failed you. I was never what any of you needed. I was only made to hurt things. My fault. my fault... Hurt. Everything hurts. Hurt back. ALWAYS hurt back. Parents. Scientists. Everyone. Have to- My friends. He killed my friends. YOU... It all started with you. You and her. It was YOU who RUINED EVERYTHING!! No, No, it's not true. They jumpstarted the generator. They...DESTROYED EVERYTHING!! I'LL KILL YOU!!! | „ |
~ Doey's heroic breakdown as his Kevin personality takes over, accusing The Intruder for causing the tragic losses of the survivors. |
The death of Sawyer gave The Prototype the opening to attack Safe Haven. Doey tries to distract him, but he fails. An explosion and a massacre befalls in Safe Haven, where Doey blames himself for not being there to protect his friends—his family. Eventually, this is the final straw, he finds himself unable to control himself and the guilt he had from the Prototype's attack on the haven, causing one of the three boys and personalities of him named Kevin and his rage to overtake Doey entirely. He wants someone else to blame and he foolishly turns on The Player. But he is soon buried in debris from the explosion, transforming himself into a reptilian monster with three heads in its mouth, representing the three boys that make Doey who he is. He chases The Player through underground zones that leads to a underground construction site. Unable to turn him back to normal, The Player is forced to kill Doey in the underground construction zone where they use liquid nitrogen canisters, industrial saws, and a tunnel boring machine to kill him, who apologizes for his actions before dying.
Powers and Abilities[]
- Clay-like Physiology: Doey's body is made entirely out of clay, which allows him to stretch, squeeze through small spaces, and shapeshift.
- Superhuman Strength: He is surprisingly strong despite being made of clay. Before losing control and transforming into a more monstrous form he destroyed a support pillar with one hit.
- Regeneration: Doey's physiology lets him heal from any kind of damage, presumably as long as at least some of his clay body is still in repairable condition.
Weaknesses[]
- Liquid Nitrogen: Liquid nitrogen is fatal to Doey, freezing him almost instantly and leaving him helpless. This weakens his healing process, prevents him from shapeshifting, renders him able to die by conventional means, and causes him great pain.
- Multiple Personalities: Doey, being made of 3 children, is basically an amalgamation of their personalities. Thus, when extreme emotional pressure is placed on him, the personalities will try to dominate each other. Due to Kevin's agressive nature, this results in Doey being VERY unpredictable, which the Prototype used against the Intruder by relocating the explosives they placed to the Safe Haven, killing most of the resident toys present & ultimately breaking Doey.
Quotes[]
“ | The voice out there, the one in the prison... They called him "The Doctor"; Doctor Harley Sawyer. He was the scientist, in charge of creating... us. We don't know what he is, or how he's still alive, but he works with the Prototype. Hunting us... Starving us... making us sick and-... *sigh* He controls it all with an Omni-Hand, we think. The executives used them. It's a battery, a key, the master control to anything in the entire factory, and with it, he commands everything down here. Everything, but this... Runs completely on its own grid. Away from the prison. For a time, it kept us safe. But now... | „ |

Trivia[]
- He is the second supporting character that becomes an enemy, the first being DogDay. However, DogDay died and only became an enemy after his lifeless corpse became a puppet controlled by the Ruined Smiling Critters.
- His name was one of many that were leaked by Mob Entertainment by accident.
- Doey's name might be a pun on the iconic Christmas song "Frosty the Snowman". It appears that Doey's hat is the only solid part of his body, and only the dough in contact with it is alive, reminiscent of how Frosty was brought to life by his magical hat.
- Fans have theorized that Doey may be still alive, seeing as he can split off large chunks of himself without adverse effect (as evidenced by the residue he has left around the factory). Thus, it's possible that the shattering of his body didn't kill him and that he can be restored once his body thaws.
- He used to be on the Villains Wiki due to him trying to kill the Player and blaming them for the destruction the Prototype caused on the Safe Haven, but since this was considered to be Kevin Barnes taking over Doey, and the fact Jack and Matthew took over Doey once more and said sorry to the Player for trying to kill them (Player’s referred to by they/them because the Player’s gender isn’t revealed yet), he was moved over to the Heroes Wiki.
