Before his mutation, Michelangelo was one of four baby turtles who lost in the sewers, and got covered by a glowing ooze from TCRI. Michelangelo and the other baby turtles were then found by a rat named Splinter, who gathered them up in a coffee can. The next morning, Donatello and the other baby turtles had doubled in size, as the ooze had affected them, along with Splinter. As he and the other baby turtles started to become intelligent, Splinter started to raise them as his sons and named them the Renaissance masters, after finding a battered book on the Renaissance artists in the storm drain in the sewers, he was named after the Renaissance sculptor Donatello. Splinter then began teaching Donatello and his turtle brothers, Leonardo, Raphael, and Michelangelo, the art of ninjutsu, which learned from mimicking the movements of his deceased owner and master Hamato Yoshi, and they were each given their own weapons, Donatello was given a bo staff. Donatello, and his brothers all developed different personalities as they grow, Donatello became the smartest and most intelligent of brothers.
