Doppo Kunikida is one of the two tritagonists (alongside Kyōka Izumi) of the Bungo Stray Dogs franchise. He is the second-in-command of the Armed Detective Agency who possesses a creation ability with his notebook, The Matchless Poet.
He is voiced by Yoshimasa Hosoya in the Japanese version, who voices Aren Kuboyasu in The Disastrous Life of Saiki K., and Fumikage Tokoyami and Dark Shadow in My Hero Academia, and by Patrick Seitz in the English version, who voiced Ira Gamagoori in Kill la Kill and Endeavor in My Hero Academia.
Appearance[]
Kunikida is a tall 22-year-old man with rectangular-framed glasses and long blonde hair tied into a low ponytail, and his bangs are parted to the right side neatly. His attire includes a black collared shirt with a red ribbon tied around the collar, beige vest and pants, and brown shoes.
Personality[]
Kunikida is a professional young man who is very dedicated to his work diligently at the Armed Detective Agency. He has a habit of organizing and planning schedules in his notebook every day, considering himself as the protagonist of his ideals. As a member of a lawfully good organization that does not intend to kill people, Kunikida genuinely values the lives of others by saving and protecting them rather than letting them die in any circumstance, especially being killed by terrorists or bombers, for example. Of all the members of the Armed Detective Members, his responsibility and leadership are the reasons that he is going to become the next President after Fukuzawa.
Aside from his professional and responsible nature, he is rather hotheaded and irritated due to Dazai's series of suicidal attempts and lies that make the former to become gullible. However, because of Dazai's ability and knowledge, Kunikida is entrusted to him, even if he is the former member of the Agency's long-term enemy organization, Port Mafia.
Upon the Agency's situation of being framed by the Decay of Angel as terrorists, Kunikida's mental state begins to decrease, due to being challenged by Saigiku Jouno, the sadistic member of the Hunting Dogs who considers his ideals as "big and lofty like a hot-air balloon" until "it runs out of fuel and crashes into the ground", much to the former's breakdown over his thoughts of losing his comrades.
Regardless, Kunikida refuses to surrender his long-term ideals and loyalty to other organizations that are cruel and unjust to him, especially the Hunting Dogs. Furthermore, he maintains his undying faith to the Agency with the goal to take down the Decay of Angel once and for all.
Biography[]
Kunikida was originally an algebra instructor and a college student who later dropped out to become a member of the Armed Detective Agency, where he later met an ex-Port Mafia member, Osamu Dazai, for the latter's entrance exam. About two years later, he and Dazai met and save Atsushi Nakajima, who was on the verge of starving to death after being kicked out by the orphanage for several days.
Ability[]
The Matchless Poet - Kunikida is able to create nonliving objects from the written and pre-written pages of his notebook. However, this ability has a certain limit: any object that is larger than the size of his notebook cannot be created. Thus, he can make anything smaller than or equal to the size of his notebook, including wire guns, flash bangs, keys, etc.
Skills[]
Martial Arts - Taught by Fukuzawa, Kunikida is proficient in martial arts, capable of restraining and overthrowing his opponents. He has enhanced strength to the point that he is able to overpower John Steinbeck's ability. Although being skilled in martial arts, Kunikida has stated that he never won a match against his master.
Trivia[]
- He is named after and based on the real-life Doppo Kunikida (1871-1908), who was a novel author and a romance poet. He is also the creator of Japanese naturalism and a former spouse of Nobuko Sasaki.
- He like his notebook, fishing, and seared tataki bonito.
