| “ | I sang, people cheered and applauded, and when I walked off stage, I'd find the same thing every night. A mountain of presents and marriage proposals. But none of those people knew me. All they knew was the singer they saw on stage. | „ |
| ~ Dorothea to Sylvain. |
Dorothea Arnault is a supporting protagonist in the 2019 tactical game, Fire Emblem: Three Houses and its 2022 sequel, Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes.
She is a member of the Black Eagles, being the only commoner of the class. She was also a songstress in the Mittelfrank Opera Company.
She is voiced by Allegra Clark in the English version (who also voiced Shamir Nevrand in the same game) and Juri Nagatsuma in the Japanese version.
Personality[]
A natural performer, Dorothea enjoys all forms of performing arts from acting to music, but has a particular affinity for singing as she was once a songstress. She is flirtatious, and has a habit of flirting with people out of belief that she needs to find someone to provide her a comfortable life, before her beauty and voice fade away and cause others to lose interest in her. She thinks this way because she is terrified with the prospect of returning to live in the streets.
Despite being the only person of common heritage among the Black Eagles, she tries to meet everyone as equals. However, she holds resentment towards those of nobility because of the classist treatment she received from nobles during her childhood and throughout, on occasion remarking how they only seemed to care about her after she became famous. Objectification on stage by the rich, added with her poor childhood, resulted in her developing self-esteem issues on par with her outgoing personality. Nonetheless, she is readily confident in her ability to strike back against men who make attempts on her life and her friends, as stated in a support with Bernadetta. All but similarly to Mercedes, she openly and immediately expresses her dislike of Lorenz in their very first support conversation due to his elitist views. While she never ascribes such attitudes to all nobility, she finds it difficult not to, leading to cases of suspicion and judgment, as seen in her supports with Ferdinand.
As a result of her commoner background, and her experiences as an orphan, she shows great concern for the common folk caught in the crossfire of wars and noble-led conflict, particularly orphaned children. During the Academy phase she expresses these following particular missions, and it is shown to grow more pronounced during the game's war phase. At later Dorothea and new kid he must desperately fade himself. Following her with someone picking on her Alex Mercury and his Crews.
Appearance[]
Dorothea has long brown hair and green eyes. She wears the Officers Academy uniform while also donning a black hat.
In post-timeskip, Dorothea wears a long songstress dress consisting of pink, brown and black color, and she no longer wears her hat. In Three Hopes, she wears an outfit similar to that of her Three Houses outfit, though it mostly consists of pink color.
Biography[]
Dorothea was born as the daughter of a maid to a nobleman in the Adrestian Empire; she was the result of a one-night stand between said nobleman and her mother. At a very young age, she and her mother were kicked out of the her father's home, as Dorothea did not possess a Crest and was thus seen as usless to him, leaving her and her mother on the streets; Dorothea's mother died of illness shortly thereafter. Dorothea was then left as an orphan, living as a street urchin, and would sometimes sing alone. One time, while she was bathing in a fountain, she was seen by Ferdinand von Aegir, who was so taken aback by her beauty that he briefly mistook her for a water nymph; he lost his nerve and fled in embarressment, which Dorothea misenterpreted as him expressing disdain towards her for being a commoner.
Eventually, Dorothea's singing was overheard by some people, who invited her to become a songstress in the Mittelfrank Opera Company. In the company, she met Manuela and started to look up to her. During her time in the Opera, she was kidnapped, assaulted and almost assassinated, but she learned to defend herself. In Imperial Year 1180, she left the Opera, entered the Officers Academy, and joined the Black Eagles house, learning and fighting alongside them.
After the timeskip, if Dorothea is a member of Byleth's class, she returns to Garreg Mach Monastery on the day of the millennium festival and accompanies them throughout the war. Should Dorothea not be recruited on the Azure Moon and Verdant Wind routes, she rejoins the Adrestian Empire post-timeskip and defends Enbarr from Byleth's chosen faction, either on the city's streets alongside Hubert and a non-recruited Petra on Azure Moon, or in the imperial palace in Verdant Wind along with Petra and Edelgard. She can be circumvented or slain at the player's discretion.
