It's a hard economy; how 'bout the economy of my patience?! It's runnin' thin, buddy! Paper thin like these walls.
~ Doug, exasperated by his brother's excuses.

Doug is a minor character in Smiling Friends who made his only appearance in the episode "Brother's Egg." He is the older brother of Professor Psychotic, with whom he had a strained relationship.

He's portrayed by Joel Haver.

Appearance[]

He is a tall, rotoscoped, Caucasian human with a stubble beard and short, brown hair.

He usually wears a blue hoodie and a navy hat, as well as red shorts and orange slides.

At his job, he wore an orange vest and a purple hat.

Personality[]

He is quite an irritable character, often snapping at others for minor slights or suggestions. He is also often stressed out due to his intense work ethic and sense of responsibility, as he works 14 hours a day to support both himself and his brother, Daniel, aka Professor Psychotic. This strain reaches a tipping point when Doug, frustrated by Daniel's unproductive behavior and lack of financial contribution, forcibly evicts him from their shared apartment by shouting at him. His brother's behavior and the death of his mother also caused him to develop an addiction to painkillers, which caused him to miss his mother's death while he was high and absentminded, which Professor Psychotic claimed happened often.

The tension between the brothers culminates in a physical altercation where Doug tries to beat up his brother, only to be interrupted by the bizarre and miraculous hatching of Daniel's homunculus. This astonishing event becomes a turning point, allowing Doug to reconcile with Daniel, their shared amazement over the homunculus bridging the gap between them. In the renewal of his bond with his brother, he calls him a genius, and vows to help him raise the creature while supporting his passion.
