The cake is a lie!
~ One of Doug Rattman's writings found inside a Rattman's Den

Doug Rattmann is the overarching protagonist of the Portal series. He is a former Aperture science employee who is the only known survivor of GLaDOS's neurotoxin attack.

In the song "Ghost of Rattman" he was voiced by Marc Laidlaw.

Biography[]

Doug Rattmann was an employee at Aperture Science and was working on the GLaDOS project, as well as the handheld portal device. He worked on the cores that would keep GLaDOS from going rogue.

His fears of GLaDOS come to life when she floods the facility with a deadly neurotoxin during the companies Bring-Your-Daughter-to-Work-Day. After this attack Rattmann was the only known survivor, who was forced to hide in the facilities walls and panels to avoid being killed by GLaDOS. Without his medication pills Doug went insane, scribbling writing all over the walls in his dens.

Before the events of Portal he moved Chell to the top of the test subject candidates so that she would defeat GLaDOS.

Portal (2007)[]

Rattmann's dens can be found throughout the test chambers, as well as in the outer facility. These dens are where he camped out during his hiding and contain writing to warn chell of GLaDOS's lies by claiming the cake she promised at the last chamber was fake and how she watches everything.

Lab Rat[]

Shortly after Chell defeated GLaDOS, Rattmann found her being dragged back in by a party escort bot. She was then placed into a relaxation vault which was offline due to the AI's destruction. Knowing that she would die, he quickly ran to activate it but got shot by a turret in the process. He then crawled into a stasis bed found in Chell's original relaxation pod and falls asleep.

Portal 2[]

More of Rattmann's dens can be found after Chell wakes up, this time with their own soundtrack. Going close to the walls in some of his chambers an incoherent rambling can be heard of him going insane due to his lack of medication.

Other Media[]

Lego Dimensions[]

Doug Rattman’s only physical appearance is in the Lego Dimensions level pack, where he can be seen hiding in the walls in four of the test chambers.

Personality[]

Doug is cautious and has a clever tone of voice. Knowing what is right and always making the best options such as knowing Chell would be the perfect subject to take down GLaDOS,

Trivia[]

  • During Portal 2 he is nowhere to be found in Chell's relaxation pod, leaving his fate unknown.
  • His ramblings may have something to do with the Borealis ship from the Half-Life series and how it went missing.
