He was created by the late Steve Ditko and the late Steve Skeates, and first appeared in Showcase #75 in June of 1968.
Biography[]
Early Life[]
Donald "Don" Hall is the son of Irwin and Rae Hall, and grew up in Elmond, Washington, D.C. alongside his brother Hank.
Becoming Dove[]
While pursuing a criminal attempting to kill their father, the Hall brothers found themselves trapped inside a room with the door locked. Upon wishing for a way to escape, members of the Lords of Order (Terataya) and the Lords of Chaos (T'Charr) granted Don's wish by gifting him and Hank the power of their groups. The beings were lovers, and agreed to give the Hall's their powers to prove that both sides factions can work together. After saving their father, Don and Hank became the superhero duo "Hawk and Dove", with both being avatars of peace and war.
Adventures[]
Despite their newfound positions as vigilantes, their father denounced them as unlawful vigilantes while their mother was aware of their heroics. Due to his quiet and peaceful nature, Don came into conflict with the violent and aggressive Hank in terms of dealing with criminals, and refused to help Hawk in battle due to his pacifism. However, his benevolence allowed him to calm down the avatar of war when it was needed. On one of their adventures, the duo encountered the Teen Titans, a group consisting of young sidekick superheroes who were pursing a criminal gang. With Hawk's hostility, a misunderstanding started a scuffle that was resolved when both sides realized they were after the same group.
Afterward, they joined the Teen Titans once Loren Jupiter started financing the team, but left to return to their responsibilities back home. The siblings later joined the Titans West until numerous factors resulted in their retirement, such as disillusionment and and wanting to continue their college education.
Death and Legacy[]
During the Crisis on Infinite Earths storyline, the Hall brothers returned to heroics and participated in the battle against the Anti-Monitor. While helping civilians evacuate to save them from Shadow Demons, Dove was killed by one when rescuing an innocent child. His death was later rewritten, with the change noting that Don died saving a child from a burning building caused by the Shadow Demons. Afterward, he was buried amongst the other heroes who died during the crisis, which was attended by a still-grieving Hank. Don also was succeeded by Dawn Granger as the new Dove, and was able to convince the reluctant Hawk to become his new partner.
Later on, Don returned as a zombie twice, first being revived by the sorcerers Circe and then by Brother Blood to stir chaos in Los Angeles. After the Teen Titans stopped Brother Blood's plot, Don found true peace, which prevented Nekron was reviving him as a Black Lantern during the Blackest Night storyline. This also prevented Hawk from being able to revive him, as the avatar of war intended to bring Don back with a White Lantern Ring.
Prime Earth[]
In the New 52, Don began a romantic relationship with Dawn Granger, who was given the power of Dove temporarily when Hall was shot by terrorists. Don was later killed by Mister Twister, but everyone's memories of the event were altered to believe that Dove died during a crisis. During the Death Metal storyline, Dove was revived by Batman with a Black Lantern ring, and asked for his assistance against the Batman Who Laughs.
