Dr. Hedo (ドクター・ヘド, Dokutā Hedo?) is a hero introduced in Dragon Ball Super. He is an scientist, android inventor, former member of the Red Ribbon Army and supporter of the Z-Fighters. He is the grandson of Dr. Gero (the twisted scientist of the Red Ribbon).
He is voiced by Miyu Irino in Japanese and Zach Aguilar in English, the latter also voiced Tanjiro in Demon Slayer, Otto in Re:Zero, and David from Cyberpunk 2077: Edgerunners.
Appearance[]
Dr. Hedo is a short, slightly pudgy young man, who has a childlike complexion and black hair. His eyes have black bags under his eyebrows. He wears a purple, black, and white costume based in a superhero one under a white lab coat.
Personality[]
Dr. Hedo is an ambivalent and opportunistic scientist, he also has has an obsession with superheroes and wants to create the perfect android superheroes. He does not believe that the Red Ribbon Army were a good organization and only joins them to continue his investigations. At the end, Dr. Hedo regret everything that he did.
Despite his obsession with superheroes, he has questionable morality himself, since he saw no ethical problem in grave robbing to create his prototype organic androids, somewhat similar to how Dr. Gero abducted Lapis and Lazuli to convert them into his Androids 17 ad 18. Even though he is exceedingly similar to his late grandfather, he views himself as superior, as when he noted that Gero was a genius, he considered himself a "super" genius; likewise, he resented having to use Gero's designs to remake Cell, with his pride favouring the Gammas even though they were significantly weaker in comparison to Cell Max.
Hedo also boasted about how people that bother or harass him end up dead; although, while he seemed to hold no remorse or guilt about lives he took, when the scale is larger, he does display deep regret, as he held himself accountable for Cell Max, even though Magenta triggered its premature activation.
Biography[]
Dr. Hedo is the grandson of Dr. Gero, a enemy of the Z-Fighters during the Android conflict, although he was aware about the death of his grandfather, he never knew that he was killed by Android 17. His parents, who despised the Red Ribbon Army due the influence that it had over Dr. Gero, died in a car accident. During his adult life, Dr. Hedo was a great scientist but he was never hired due his peculiar personality and actions, so Dr. Hedo created the Alpha series to do an experiment making them to work in a supermarket, however, it was discovered that he had stolen cadavers from the morgue to create them, thus he was arrested and sentenced for grave robbing. During his time in jail, Carmine investigated him in order to use him to create androids for the Red Ribbon Army.
When Dr. Hedo served his sentence, he accepted the proposal of Commander Magenta to create the perfect android for the Red Ribbon Army even despite the disappointment of his parents to the army. He first created two androids: Gamma 1 and Gamma 2, both with superhero personalities since Magenta lied to him saying that the Z-Fighters are villains; Hedo was given the plans to Cell, which he was reluctant to use due to its evil appearance, however, he was able to learn from his grandfather's designs to contribute to the creation of his perfect android: Cell Max, a monster that vastly surpassed the original by having a faster development time and greater power.
After Gamma 2 failed to kill Piccolo Jr., Magenta demanded the completion of Cell Max, however, it didn't activate due to still needing to gestate and undergo programming to make it controllable.
While the Gammas fought Gohan and Piccolo, the misunderstanding propagated by Magenta was corrected, with the Gammas learning that the Z Fighters weren't villains, thus no longer needed to fight them.
In a panic from the Gammas failing to destroy his enemies and him being exposed, Magenta went to the lab to activate Cell Max while Dr. Hedo tried to prevent him to do it, Magenta tries to kill him but Dr. Hedo has his skin chemically modified to be impervious to shocks and ballistic impacts, so Magenta tries to confront him with his cyborg powers.
Dr. Hedo uses Hachimaru to sting Magenta and kill him with his poison, but in his death throes, Magenta activates the final override to awaken Cell Max despite it being incomplete. Dr. Hedo, incapable to prevent this, advised the Gammas about this before losing consciousness in an explosion caused by Cell Max, which awakened without being capable of following orders, purely existing on fighting instinct and destructive impulses.
Dr. Hedo awakes after the defeat of Cell Max and realizes the sacrifice of Gamma 2, feeling guilty about everything, however, the Z-Fighters forgives him for all of this; Bulma noted his genius in biological engineering, seeing potential for cosmetics and medicine, so gives him employment in Capsule Corporation, and allowing Gamma 1 to work as his bodyguard.
Trivia[]
- Hedo is a lighter shade of grey than his grandfather. He at least only grave robs, which only unethical and not highly illegal as kidnappings and mutilation of living people.
- If viewed practically, he's not really hurting anyone; just desecrating the dead. Few people would actually care; the bodies would technically be donated to science.
