Edith de Haviland is the overarching protagonist of Agatha Christie's novel, Crooked House.

She was portrayed by Glenn Close in the 2017 film adaptation, who also portrayed Kala in the Disney film Tarzan, Granny Puckett in the Hoodwinked franchise, Irani Rael in Guardians of the Galaxy and Vice President Kathryn Bennettin Air Force One.

Biography[]

Edith is the sister of Aristides Leonides's long-dead wife. He allowed her to live in his mansion even after he remarried, since she has no family of her own and his children from her sister are her only relatives. When Aristide dies, the police begin to investigate his death because someone injected him with a medicine for his eyesight instead of insulin.

Later, Edith meets Charles, the fiancé of Aristide's granddaughter, Sophia. She tells him that she suspects Aristide's new wife Brenda and his grandchildren's tutor Lawrence in what happened. However, after their arrest (due to the attempted murder of Sofia's sister Josephine), she offers to hire them a lawyer, since deep down she understands that they could be innocent, and they were not completely strangers to her.

Later, someone poisons Josephine's cocoa. The nanny, whom Josephine treated with this cocoa, dies. Charles tries to ask Josephine what she knows, but she won't say. Edith takes her for a ride in the car, and later both disappear.

After some time, they find a car that was involved in an accident, and in it are the corpses of Josephine and Edith. They also find Edith's last letter and Josephine's notebook, from which it becomes clear that it was Josephine who killed Aristide and the nanny. Edith realized that Josephine was the killer, and, in order to avoid a family scandal, she caused an accident, thus killing Josephine along with herself.

Personality[]

Edith is a rather vindictive woman. However, on the other hand, she shows good-heartedness. She is ready to hire a lawyer for Brenda and Laurence, despite the fact that she suspects (or rather, is inclined to suspect) them of the murder of Aristide, arguing that they are not completely strangers to her, as well as to the rest of the family, although, most likely, she understands that Brenda and Lawrence might not have killed Aristide. Later, realizing that Josephine was behind everything that was happening, Edith kills her and commits suicide to avoid a family scandal.
