Edward Jellico was the captain of the USS-Enterprise-D for a few days during the events of the TNG two-parter, "Chain of Command." He was played by veteran actor Ronnie Cox, who is known for his role as Dick Jones in the movie Robocop. He successfully stops the Cardassians from invading Mimos Korvos.
Information[]
We first see Ed when he is called to replace Jean Luc, who is assigned on a mission, along with Beverly and Worf, to wipe out metogenic bands on Celtrus 3. He officially becomes the captain of the ship, and this causes problems with Riker (while everyone else has objections to certain of his changes, and certain aspects of his command structures, none of them disrespect Jellico, and in every case offers their suggestions with respect and in private; Geordi doesn't in private but does express his objections with respect; eventually he gets over it), who undermines his authority throughout the two episodes. Jellico makes changes to the ship, like a four-shift rotation, in an attempt to ready the ship and its crew for possible war, should negotations with the Cardassians fail. He successfully manages to keep a dominant position in the talks, protecting the Federation from the bullying of Gul Lemec. He makes hard decisions, and is forced to disregard to Picard, for the greater good. This causes Riker to be angry and tell him off, which in turn causes Jellico to rightfully relieve him of duty for insubordination. Even so, Jellico swallows his pride and asks Riker to pilot the shuttles that will put mines on Cardassians ships in the nebula near Minos Korvas. He successfully gets the Cardassians to stop their attempted invasion and manages to rescue Picard. Despite his hardassed command style, he does bond with his crew members, the same way Picard does.
