Eileen Grimshaw is a fictional character and primary protagonist of the long-running British soap opera Coronation Street. She debuted on 3rd May 2000 and has since then become one of the show's central protagonists.

She is portrayed by Sue Cleaver.

History[]

Eileen Grimshaw first came to Weatherfield in mid-2000 upon moving her life in the street. It was then her two sons, Jason and Todd, arrived later on and the Grimshaw Family established themselves in the street for over the next two decades. Soon enough she got a job at the taxi officer and worked alongside local resident Steve McDonald, thus leading to a close friendship between the pair from then onwards.

In 2004, Eileen embarked on a rivalry with her neighbour Gail Platt when the latter's daughter Sarah ends up dating both Todd and Jason on separate occasions. At one point Sarah and Todd dated until she found out he was gay, which sparked a massive fight between Eileen and Gail on the street. It was then Jason started dating Sarah and they got married in 2007 until they separated not long afterwards. Throughout it all, it became clear that Eileen and Gail were sworn archenemies as well as competitive love rivals going against one another.

In 2009, Eileen was happy to be reunited with her father Colin and best friend Paula Carp on respective matters. By then Paula's daughter Julie had came to the street and started dating Jason. However, their relationship ended when Paula told them and Eileen that both Jason and Julie are actually related; Eileen learned that her father Colin is also Julie's father, thereby making Julie both Jason's aunty and Eileen's half-sister. It was then Eileen learned that Colin had sexually abused Paula back when the latter and Eileen were in school together. Eileen disowned her father but was saddened when he passed away a few weeks later.

In 2015, Eileen clashed with Gail again over the former's closeness with the latter's estranged husband Michael Rodwell after his marriage with Gail collapses. This led to another scrap between the two women that ended when Michael chose Eileen over Gail, but the romance didn't last when Eileen broke up with Michael in the end.

In 2016, the year when Eileen broke up with Michael, she became acquainted with builder Pat Phelan and the two started a relationship. Little did Eileen know that Phelan was a villain who had already victimized one of her neighbours, Anna Windass, by raping her when he blackmailed the latter into sleeping with him in exchange for stopping his torment of both her son Gary and her fiancé Owen Armstrong respectively. However, Eileen disbelieved Anna's warning about Phelan when he told her his version of the story.

From then onwards Eileen settled into a blissful marriage with Phelan until in March 2018 when she finally discovered his crimes and the extent of his villainous nature. She kicked him into sea and presumably killed him as a result, but Phelan survived and returned to the street. Anna then killed Phelan in self-defence and made amends with Eileen before leaving the street.

Sue Cleaver (the actress who played Eileen Grimshaw) received several awards and nominations for both her character's performance and it's contribution to some high-profile storylines.
Eileen will leave the show in 2025 after twenty-five years.
