One day... our warriors will be renowed as... the Einherjar... the Thirteen God Killers!
~ Brunhilde naming her 13 warriors as the Einherjar

The Einherjar (エインヘルヤル, Einheryaru) are the main protagonists of the manga and anime series Record of Ragnarok.

They are thirteen famous humans from various places and periods in human history chosen by the Valkyrie Brunhilde to fight the Gods Fighters in the Ragnarok tournament and save humanity.

During the Gods' Council, the Gods decide to exterminate humanity. However, the Valkyrie Brunhilde takes the side of the Humans and proposes holding the Ragnarok tournament : a series of thirteen one-on-one battles between Humans and Gods, where in each match they fight each other to the death and the first faction to achieve seven wins is declared the winner. If the Humans lose, then they will be exterminated. However, if they win, then the Gods will have to let them live for another thousand years.

At first, the Gods reject Brunhilde's proposal, seeing that it is pointless and would only be a waste of time. However, when Brunhilde taunts them by saying that perhaps they were afraid of fight against Humans, the Gods become enrage, causing them to accept Ragnarok.

History[]

After the proclamation of Ragnarok, the tournament begins with Thor representing the Gods and Lü Bu representing Humanity. During the fight, Lü Bu manages to land several hits on Thor, much to the amazement of the Gods. From here, Zeus realizes that Humanity is using Völundr, which is a technique of the Valkyries to merge with humans to give them Divine Weapons capable of harming the Gods. Unfortunately, even with the help of the Valkyrie Randgriz and his horse, the Red Hare, Lü Bu is ultimately defeated and killed by Thor, which resulted in the Gods being one score ahead of the Humans.

In the second round, Brunhilde decides to deploy the ace of Humanity, the first man Adam. He fights Zeus and joins with the Valkyrie Reginleif. With the help of his Divine Reflection, Adam manages to gain the upper hand in the fight. However, Zeus immediately get up and uses his ultimate form, which, although Adam still manage to gain the upper hand, is ultimately blinded and defeated by Zeus. Adam then die along with Reginleif, which resulted in the Gods being two scores ahead of the Humans. However, his fight manages to inspired Humanity to believe in their chances.

When Poseidon was announced as the representative of the Gods in the third round, Brunhilde is confused about who she should send, considering that Poseidon is the brother of Zeus. At that moment, History's Greatest Loser, Kojiro Sasaki, steps in and volunteers to represent Humanity. Even though she is hesitant, Brunhilde finally agrees and pairs Kojiro with her sister, the Valkyrie Hrist. By using Senju Musō, Kojiro is able to keep up with Poseidon, but is then overwhelmed in facing him, even breaking his Völund. Fortunately, thanks to Hrist's help and Humanity's cheering support, Kojiro manages to get up and kills Poseidon, causing Humanity to gain one score. Poseidon's death causes the Gods to start taking Humanity more seriously.

When the Gods sent Heracles to represent them in the fourth round, Brunhilde decides to send the serial killer Jack the Ripper to represent Humanity. Before the fight, Jack forced Völundr on the Valkyrie Hlökk and asked Heracles that the battle arena be modeled after the 19th century London, to which Heracles agreed. During the fight, Heracles' view of Jack changes when he learns of Jack's history, deciding to save Jack from his pain. However, in the end, Jack uses Dear God to kill Heracles. Since Heracles did not die in fear, Jack considers himself lost, while Heracles embraces Jack and afterwards asks Brunhilde to save Humanity. Until then, Heracles died, causing equal scores between the Gods and Humanity. Jack, who is saddened by Heracles' death, then promised to meet someone special again.

For the fifth round, Brunhilde chooses the Peerless Rikishi, Raiden Tameemon, to be Humanity's next representative. Raiden then paired himself with Valkyrie Thrud and created the Mawashi of Flesh and Bone. After getting his Völundr, Raiden enters the arena and fights against Shiva as the representative of the Gods. During the tournament, Loki calls one of the Gods Fighters, Buddha, to attack him along with the Seven Lucky Gods because they think Buddha is a traitor. However, Buddha was immediately defended by Kojiro Sasaki who had recovered and two members of the Shinsengumi, Soji Okita and Isami Kondo. Just as the two sides were about to fight, Zeus and Odin came to stop the fight, forcing everyone to retreat back to their places. Meanwhile, Raiden was able to put up a fight against Shiva and even managed to destroy three of his four arms. However, using Tandava Karma, Shiva managed to defeat and kill Raiden, winning the fifth round of Ragnarok and causing the Gods' score to be superior again. Even so, Shiva's thoughts about Humanity changed and made him think that Humans are extraordinary.

Before the sixth round, Brunhilde was approached by Buddha. Buddha reveals that Zeus told him to fight for the Gods in the sixth round. However, Buddha decided to fight for Humanity. Brunhilde thanked Buddha and already expected that he would betray the Gods because of his hatred for them. At the start of the sixth round, Buddha announced his betrayal, which shocked everyone and angered the Gods. To punish him, they sent Bishamonten to fight Buddha. Before the fight, Bishamomten merged with the other six Seven Lucky Gods and transformed into their original form : Zerofuku. However, with Pure Enlightenment Eighth Consciousness, Buddha dominates the fight, which frustates Zerofuku, especially since the audience only cares about Buddha and not him. Realizing Zerofuku's problem, Buddha advised him about happiness and in the end succeeded in bringing Zerofuku to his senses.

Unfortunately for Zerofuku, thanks to the experiment Beelzebub performed on him, he turns into the Demon Hajun and takes his place to fight Buddha. During the fight, Buddha's weapon, the Staff of Six Realms, is destroyed thanks to Hajun's attack. Fortunately, Buddha together with Zerofuku's soul created the Great Nirvana Sword - Zero who was able to turn the situation and in the end, succeeded in killing Hajun. Hajun's death led to the death of Zerofuku, which saddened Buddha but also said goodbye to the poor God. Buddha's victory caused Humanity score to tie with the Gods.

After speaking with Michel Nostradamus, Brunhilde was informed that Hades, King of the Netherworld, is fighting in the seventh round in Buddha's stead. Brunhilde quickly chose his opponent, the King of Where It All Began, Qin Shi Huang, and paired him with the tenth Valkyrie, Alvitr. Thanks to Völundr, Alvitr became Almighty Spaulders. During the fight with Hades, Qin Shi Huang managed to corner Hades until Hades used Ichor : Desmos which was so strong that he was able to gouge Qin Shi Huang's left shoulder. Additionally, Hades was aware of Qin Shi Huang's Touch Synesthesia and injured himself to protect himself from Qin Shi Huang's pressure point breath strikes and with his blood strengthened his weapon. Luckily, thanks to Alvitr transforming into the Shi Huang Goujian Sword, Humanity's cheering support, and the vital weakness within Desmos coming to life after being imbued with Hades' blood, Qin Shi Huang used Tortoise Ripple to weaken Hades' weapon and ultimately destroy it. With Hades' weapon destroyed, Qin Shi Huang stabbed Hades in the chest and slashed him, instantly killing him and winning the seventh round. Qin Shi Huang's victory caused Humanity to score ahead of the Gods for the first time.

For the eighth round, Brunhilde chose the Human History's One and Only Sorcerer, Nikola Tesla, to fight. Tesla paired with the ninth Valkyrie Göndul and with Völundr, creating Super Automaton β, an armor that Tesla created through his theory. He fought against Beelzebub, who had a grudge against Humanity for killing Hades. Despite receiving many attacks, instead of despairing, Tesla is actually happy because of the amount of knowledge he gained through his battle with Beelzebub. Using his moves, such as Plasma Pulse Punch, Gematria Zone, Tesla Warp, and Plasma Pulse Punch Moebius, Tesla is able to corner Beelzebub, even almost killing him with his Plasma Pulse Punch Cross. Unfortunately for Tesla, Beelzebub used Sorath Resh - Satan's Horn to pierce Tesla's heart, killing the human. However, before he died, Tesla gave an encouraging speech to Humanity to move forward. Until in the end, Tesla died along with Göndul, which caused the score to become a tie again.

Learning that the Sun God Apollo had been chosen to fight in the ninth round, Brunhilde decided to persuade the Strongest Rebel in Human History, King Leonidas of Sparta, to fight. Although he initially refused because he was not interested, Leonidas finally agreed after learning that his opponent is Apollo, whom he hated. Leonidas joined forces with the fifth Valkyrie, Geirölul and created the shape-shifting Aspis Shield. During the fight, Leonidas is always beaten by Apollo which gave him little chance to attack the God. Until Leonidas used the Phalanx Nemesis which managed to hit Apollo and left a scar on his face. However, Leonidas knew that Apollo didn't care about external beauty and only cared about the beauty of the soul that burned when fighting. This changed Leonidas' view of Apollo but stated that he still insisted on killing him with all his strength. Unfortunately for Leonidas, he lost when his Aspis Shield was destroyed when it clashed with Apollo's Argyrotoxos and left a large wound on his stomach. Despite trying to punch the God in the face, Leonidas ultimately gave in and expressed his pride as a Spartan. Until in the end, Leonidas died along with Geirölul which caused the Gods' score to be superior again.

After Leonidas' death, Brunhilde is frustrated about who she will choose to fight in the tenth round. Until in the end, the Shinsengumi First Division Captain and nicknamed the Demon Child, Soji Okita, volunteered to fight after being motivated by Leonidas who died in battle, which Brunhilde agreed to. Before the tenth round, Brunhilde was approached by Loki who offered her protection from the Gods when Humanity lost. However, Brunhilde refuses, knowing that Loki has another goal. Disappointed, Loki brings up Sigfried who was imprisoned in Tartarus and that Ragnarok was held to save Siegfried. However, Brunhilde denied it and said that everything was for Humanity. Buddha elsewhere confronts Odin and questions him about Sigfried and his secret role in holding Ragnarok. But Odin instead attacked Buddha with his Gungnir Spear. Fortunately, Beelzebub arrives and saves Buddha while revealing Odin's plan to resurrect the Primordial God Arkhe. Before a clash occurred between the three, Thor, Adamantine, and Sakata Kintoki, who had just returned from his search, stopped the fight. Afterwards, Odin and Thor left, followed by Buddha and Kintoki, leaving Beelzebub and Adamantine behind.

Afterwards, the tenth round begins in the arena in the form of Kyoto in the Bakumatsu era, proposed by Soji's opponent, Susano'o no Mikoto. During the start of the fight, Soji managed to dominate the fight and even destroyed Susano'o's sword sheath, revealing his sword, Onikiri Ame no Murakumo. With that sword, Susano'o managed to keep up with Soji. Despite this, Soji still manages to dominate with the help of Onigo and the sixth Valkyrie Skalmöld, even repeatedly injuring Susano'o and ultimately destroying his sword. However, Susano'o has not given up and uses the invisible sword technique Musouken to kill Soji once and for all. When Soji thought he was going to die, Isami Kondo and his friends from the Shinsengumi encouraged him to rise, which caused Soji to rush towards Susano'o and use Tensho Sandanzuki to deliver three fatal strikes to Susano'o's body, ultimately killing him. Even though he won, Soji felt sad about the death of Susano'o, who was considered his equal, and expressed his gratitude to the God. With Susano'o's death, Soji automatically wins the fight causing the score between Gods and Humanity to be tied again.

Before the eleventh round begins, Nostradamus kidnaps Göll and takes her to Tartarus to bring her before the imprisoned Siegfried, much to Göll's shock. Siegfried reveals to Göll that Nostradamus was ordered by Odin to look after him and also reveals his other intention to borrow Göll's power to stop the revival of the Primordial Gods, much to Göll's confusion. Siegfried then tells the true story of the Primordial Gods and Ragnarok, where Odin, King of the Norse pantheon, is actually one of the 88 Primordial Gods called Primordial Odin and one of the 4 Pillars of Primordial Gods or Yggrdrasil, along with Ymir, Satan, and Chaos. One day, Yggdrasil, along with 7 other Primordial Gods, decided to exterminate the Gods because they considered them "unnecessary". However, the other 77 Primodial Gods, including Izanagi, opposed the decision of Yggdrasil and their allies, leading to the start of the great Ragnarok war. Even though their numbers were fewer, Yggdrasil and his allies were able to prevail in the war due to their extraordinary powers. This forced the surviving Primordial Gods to use the forbidden technique Gleipnir - Weave of Sealed Gods to seal Yggdrasil and their allies. Their efforts were successful, as Yggdrasil and their Primordial Gods allies were pulled into a black hole-shaped seal and imprisoned forever. However, unbeknownst to the Primordial Gods, the four members of Yggdrasil managed to transport their essence into their four divine weapons which would later become known as the Four Treasures of Calamity, before then throwing the four weapons out of the seal right before the seal closed, hoping that someday there would be someone worthy to inherit the power of the Primordial Gods. Until one day, a Nameless God found Odin's sword, Gram, which, after holding it, transferred Odin's essence into the Nameless God, turning him into the known Odin. After Siegfried finishes telling his story, Nostradamus reveals that Odin has collected the Four Treasures of Calamity, but reveals that Odin also needs the Water of Life and The Original Vessel, which is revealed to be the life energy of humanity and Siegfried himself. From here Göll understands Odin's goal to destroy humanity and Brunhilde who is trying to save everyone, but she still doesn't understand why she was chosen to help Siegfried. Siegfried reveals that Göll is the most important final piece.

In Valhalla, Brunhilde asks Loki to meet her, where Brunhilde begs Loki to fight in the eleventh round. Despite his reservations and disappointment, Loki agrees to fight in the eleventh round. To defeat Loki, Brunhilde decided to send the so-called White Death. Outside the Valhalla Arena, the 12th valkyrie, Radgridr, was looking for a fighter to Völundr with her, who upon approaching Radgridr, was revealed to be the Greatest Sniper in Human History, Simo Häyhä.

After doing Völundr with Radgrid to create the M28-30 Rifle, Simo enters arena in the form of the Finnish forest requested by Loki to remind Simo of his trauma during the Winter War. Before entering the forest, Simo asks his dog to wait at the gate of the arena and promises to return to her once the fight is over. Simo then enters the forest and prepares his rifle to fight Loki.

Powers and Abilities[]

Superhuman Physiology, Strength, and Stamina : Since the Einherjar are the strongest Humans in the history of Mankind, they possess extraordinary strength, durability, stamina, and reflexes that can match or even surpass the Gods. However, since they are still human, they can die of age or be killed by normal weapons.

Völundr : By performing Völundr, a technique that unites their souls with the Valkyries', the Valkyries can transform into Divine Weapons suitable for the Einherjar, capable of matching, cornering, and even killing the Gods. In addition to extreme durability, these weapons also possess supernatural abilities that allow the Einherjar to fight at the peak of their potential or even surpass it. However, these weapons can be destroyed by a powerful attack from the Gods, which can result in the Valkyries' death.

Supernatural Abilities : The Einherjar share one supernatural ability, the Golden Age, where their souls in Valhalla can appear with the same form and abilities as in their golden age, when the Einherjar were at the peak of their glory (with the exception of Kojiro Sasaki who continues to age because he continues to grow stronger even after his death). In addition to the Golden Age, some Einherjar also have various supernatural abilities, such as emiting a very threatening death aura, the ability to copy every movement of a God, the ability to see people's emotions through eye, the ability to see the moments of future by reading the fluctuations of soul, the ability to see the flow of Qi that can weaken his opponent's technique by attacking its flow, and emit an aura that can increase his power.
