“ | I know how this sounds. It must seem so selfish of me to ask so much of you... Still, though, I wish to join you. If you ever find cause to distrust me... kill me then and there. | „ |
~ Eir |
Eir is a character from Fire Emblem Heroes and the lead character of Book III. She is the adoptive daughter of Hel, and a Mythic Hero of Light who allies with the Order of Heroes after being captured on purpose in an attempt to kill them all from the inside, but redeemed herself upon bonding with them. In reality, she is the princess of Ymir, the realm of life, having been kidnapped as an infant by the abusive Hel.
Biography[]
Book III[]
Prior to the events of Heroes, Eir carried thousands of mortal lives inside her thanks to Ymir. This left her immortal, as she would resurrect each time she died using one of her many souls. Her mother, Hel, who became more powerful with each life she takes, saw this as a golden opportunity to strengthen herself. So she took to killing her daughter repeatedly, eventually causing Eir to lose her immortality once all of her lives were used.
When the seal keeping Hel's forces out of Zenith eroded, Hel ordered Eir to travel to the world of the living to infiltrate the forces of the humans and gain their trust, only killing them when the opportune moment strikes. While reluctant, Eir had little choice but to obey her mother's orders. Secretly escaping her realm and confronting the Order of Heroes, she deliberately them to defeat her. Following the battle, Eir is imprisoned after Alfonse refuses her request to be slain on the spot.
As Alfonse prepares to meet with his father Gustav, Eir expresses her desire to fight alongside the Order of Heroes, only for them to grow suspicious of her. When asked to explain herself, she kept quiet. Though Anna is still wary of Eir, she ultimately agrees to her request, under the condition that Eir is to be killed shall she decide to betray her newfound allies.
Eir became an ally to the Order of Heroes from here on, serving as a guide once the group entered Hel. All the while, Eir tries to reason with her mother, but it proved to be futile as Hel gives Eir no other choice but to obey. She also met Líf eventually, wondering if he was sent to keep an eye on her. However, Eir begins to remember something, and wonders if she had known him some time before. Líf disregards this and tells her to forget about it. Meanwhile, in the alternate Askr, Eir once again confronts Líf, stating that she's close to remembering something dear and inquiring about the flowers in the memorial he made. Líf states the same thing that he did before, even suggesting that Hel wipe her memories before he can abandon her again. Eir takes note of the sadness on his face as he leaves.
It's eventually revealed that Eir is not Hel's actual child, but rather the daughter of royalty blessed by the dragon of life. Hel was responsible for the deaths of Eir's biological parents, then took the princess in as her daughter to feed on her thousands of lives. She pretended to be nurturing and altruistic before she began to abuse and kill her repeatedly, so she'd be able to make Eir love her no matter what.
Tempest Trials: Life & Death[]
Sometime after Hel's defeat, Eir is approached by Ganglöt, Hel's handmaid, who details to her about the realm of the dead's newly dilapidated state in absence of a leader. Assuming that Ganglöt is requesting her return, Eir refuses to claim the throne, but Ganglöt reveals her true intentions: to rule over Hel herself and kill Eir, removing her only rival for the position and avenging her mistress. Eir is helpless to protect herself from Ganglöt's strike, but soon wakes up unharmed and face-to-face with Ymir, the dragon of life who once granted Eir the legion of lives that Hel had since taken for herself. Ymir reveals that Eir was, in fact, killed by Ganglöt, but Ymir sacrificed herself and now lives on within Eir's mind. She further reflects on the happy, healthy relationship she shared with Eir and her parents before she was kidnapped by Hel and confesses that she blames herself for Eir's suffering. Eir then journeys into Hel to gather the souls of Ymir's citizens to revive the Realm of Life.
As she journeys through Hel to gather Ymir's souls, Eir is confronted by Líf, who had been conscripted by Ganglöt to assassinate her. Eir is able to but up a fight against him, after which she questions why he is working for Ganglöt and what happened to Thrasir. Though he is unwilling to say much pertaining to Thrasir, he answers that being the current ruler of the dead, Ganglöt is unable to disobey a direct command from her, though he does let her pass for the time being.
As Eir makes ventures to Hel's castle, she and Ymir are able to sense the remaining souls from the Realm of Life. Eir then decides that she can no longer put off a confrontation with Ganglöt and asks Ymir to provide her with, thus receiving her Ascended form. Eir approaches Ganglöt's throne room only to be confronted by the former handmaiden. Eir responds to Ganglöt's taunting with confidence, but is unable to overpower her and if left on the brink of defeat, though she still refuses to flee. Realizing Eir's willingness to lay her life down for the people of the realms of both life and death, Ymir formulates a plan that requires both of their sacrifice. Eir allows Ganglöt to kill her and absorb her power, only for Ganglöt to end up unwittingly absorbing the essence of Ymir as well, who is then able to kill Ganglöt from the inside out. However, Ymir ends up destroying herself as well in the process.
With the new ruler of Hel dead, the souls of the Realm of Life are freed, including Eir's biological mother, who reunites with her deceased daughter. As Líf and Thrasir arrive, the former queen of Ymir introduces herself to them before bringing Eir back to life at the cost of her own. Eir awakens shortly thereafter, and the circumstances of her second resurrection are explained to her by her former friends, who then vanish before Eir can ask them much else. Now alone, Eir muses over what she has experienced and the sacrifices of both Ymir and her true mother, who she was never able to meet, for her sake, vowing to live on with renewed vigor and hope as she believes she will someday be reunited with them both before returning to her friends in the Order of Heroes.
