Biography[]
Early Life[]
Eivor Varinsdottir was born in 847 to Varin and Rosta in the small settlement of Heillboer, Rygjafylke and lived under the rule of King Styrbjorn of Fornburg. When she was eight years old, the settlement was raised by Kjotve the Cruel and his Wolf Clan, and witnessed the deaths of her parents. She was rescued by the king's son Sigurd, but the two were separated when a raider tumbled the two. At a frozen lake, Eivor was attacked by a wolf, causing her to see a memory of Odin and leaving a noticeable scar. Two ravens managed to distract the wolf, allowing Eivor to collect an axe and kill it. She reunited with Sigurd and was adopted into Styrbjorn's house, and was trained to become a shieldmaiden. Eivor trained herself to become a capable warrior, wanting to avenge her parents' death by hunting down and killing Kjotve.
Assassin's Creed: Valhalla[]
By 872, Eivor and her crew pursued Kjotve, but was captured by him, as he showed her father's axe, as Kjotve used it to kill Varin. She managed to free herself and meet up with her ally, Dag Nithisson and traveled to Avaldsnes to pursue Kjotve. There, she was confronted by Kjotve's follower Rikiwulf, and defeated him and retrieved her father's axe. She then saw a vision of a man in cloak and a wolf, but continued on and rescued her crew before going to the longship. Eivor and her crew returned to Fornburg, and learned from her sister-in-law, Randvi, that Styrbjorn was unpleased with her raid, and that Sigurd was returning from his journey.
Wanting to make sense of her vision, Eivor met with the seer Valka, and was given a brew that gave her hallucinations and saw the Nornir weaving fate and Fenrir. She then told Valka of her vision, who warned the shieldmaiden that the message was that she would be betrayed by her brother. Eivor met with Sigurd, who introduced her to Basim Ibn Ishaq and Hytham, who were members of the Hidden Ones. She was given a hidden blade, and later overheard Sigurd's plan of either subjugating Ireland, England, or Francia, or attack Kjotve's fortress. After having another dream, Eivor awoke to see one of Kjotve's spies, which she chased and killed, along with his two associates. She would return to Fornburg and worked with Siguard on raiding Nottfall, and later fleded from Norway when Harald Fairhair spoke of unification.
Eivor and her clan decided to settle in England, and claimed an abandoned encampment after dealing with Saxon bandits that overtook it. She was tasked with growing the settlement, and either raided the Meldeburne or Alcestre monastery, and returned to have a forge built. Later on, Eivor met with Randvi to pledge her allegiance to Grantebridgescire to help Soma and her army to fight against the Saxons. She helped Soma find her adivsors and learned that the Grantebridgescire were ambushed by Order of the Ancients member Wigmund. Soma promised her allegiance to Eivor if she retook the land from Wigmund and managed to retake the monastery and kill him.
Personality[]
Eivor was a devoted and confident Viking clan leader, who was not afraid of dying to protect her people. Despite her deep love for her clan, she was a lone wolf. Indeed, driven by her dream to prove her courage, she preferred to take on all tasks and risks herself. On top of being a fierce warrior, Eivor was cunning and was a great strategist, as shown by her alliances with other territorial leaders. Considered stubbornly independent, she also claimed to not be fond of surprises.
Eivor also had a poetic side, speaking with eloquence and often describing events in a manner that resembles skaldic verse. Although Eivor held Hytham and by extension the Hidden Ones in high regard, Eivor kindly declined to join them as it meant keeping her victories and glory quiet, something which went against her culture's nature. Eivor seems to possess some fragments of Odin's persona and memories. As is evident by their shared disdain for wolves, and how she recognised Odin's spear Gungnir when she discovered it within Goinnhellir.
Powers and Abilities[]
Powers[]
- Superhuman Physical Traits: Eivor's Strength, Speed, Durability and Stamina were well above even peak human level. She could easily break the necks of Goliath-sized enemies with a chokehold. She also proved to be a strong swimmer whilst searching underwater ruins and was capable of holding her breath for a relatively long period of time. A heavy drinker, Eivor could hold her liquor and would occasionally participate in drinking competitions, And could withstand being exposed to poisons and toxins for a much longer time that most normal humans and recover faster.
- Odin's Sight/Raven Connection: Eivor shared a symbiotic relationship with her raven, Sýnin, which aided her in reconnaissance thanks to her Eagle Vision. Unlike later generations who possessed the skill, her Eagle Vision was far more literal in the sense that activating the ability allowed her to see through the eyes of Sýnin. Eivor also possessed the ability known as 'Odin's Sight' which was more akin to later iterations of Eagle Vision in which it allowed her to release a brief pulse that would locate and tag nearby enemies and points or objects of interest, even through walls and floorboards. Eivor could also tame wolves and taught them to fight with her.
Abilities[]
- Genius Level Intellect/Master Tactician/Great Political Acumen/Master Investigator/Leader: Likely inherited from her predecessor, Eivor was incredibly sharp, observant, cunning, and academically intelligent; to a degree uncommon among the humans of her time. Eivor was well educated, having been raised in a royal house, and was incredibly well read, as well as possessed an intense passion for poetry and music. She proved to possess a keen understanding of Old English 、Latin and French as well. Raised in a warring clan in a position of expected potential leadership, Eivor was well educated on matters of war and politics from a young age, proving gifted with both especially following the Raven clan's arrival in England. Despite usually following her brother Sigurd's lead in most major conflicts, Eivor was herself a master strategist, able to successfully outsmart many experienced battle commanders across the British Isles and France, and played a significant role in the destruction of the last remnants of The Order of The Ancients. Eivor was also an unexpectedly gifted diplomat, successfully brokering many powerful alliances with the major factions and Kingdoms of England. When traveling to Vinland Eivor was able to learn how to communicate with the local native tribes to a limited degree, despite the language barrier, showing a great amount of patience despite the circumstances. Most notably, however was Eivor's brilliance as an investigator and tracker, being so capable that she could visually recreate the event of a crime in her mind's eye by analyzing the scene with the assistance of her Odin sight. Eivor also proved an excellent leader, effectively taking command of the Raven clan in Sigurd's absence and lead it so well that Sigurd later abdicated control of the clan to Eivor permanently following the game's climax. Lastly, Eivor's intelligence shined most in her ability to solve the deadly puzzles left behind by Manius across England, and was able to somewhat comprehend the basics of Isu technology, though only to a limited degree.
- Master hand-to-hand combatant: Growing up in a powerful Norse clan that participated in raiding, Eivor was well trained in armed and unarmed combat. Eivor was extremely skilled in hand-to-hand combat, and was formidable even when fighting bare-knuckled, and often enjoyed brawling and tournaments to improve her skill. After arriving in England Eivor's skill greatly improved, with her proving herself by facing numerous formidable elite warriors such Ragnar Lothbrok's surviving Drengr, the Order of the Ancients' Zealots, the Paladin Fulke, the daughters of Lerion, the Children of Danu, King Thorgest's Drengr, and the Frankish Lilibonnes family, all master combatants in their own right. Eivor's true test of abilities came near the end of the game, however, when she faced the Master Assassin Basim Ibn Ishaq, who possessed the combined abilities of both Master level Hidden One training and Loki's mastery of combat. Despite her skill and experience, however, she was still outmatched by Odin when facing him Goinnhellir, being only able to defeat him by abandoning the fight altogether. She was also matched and almost defeated by Kassandra, who fought her to a standstill and very nearly gained the upper hand. Eivor also defeats a lot of legendary animals and she personally experienced Odin's memories in Asgard, Jotunheim, Svartalfheim and Hell, and gained Odin's combat skills .
- Weapon Mastery: By her twenties, Eivor was capable of wielding a variety of weapons including; swords, spears, bearded and Dane axes, and war hammers and flails. Her mastery was such that she could quickly master new weapons she was unfamiliar with, such as the hidden blade gifted to her by Basim, as well as the scythe and sickle which were introduced to her on her travels in Ireland and Francia. She could also effectively dual wield, and was strong enough to dual wield two heavy weapons. She had sharp reflexes and could dodge, parry, and block incoming attacks.
- Master Archer: Eivor was also an excellent archer, rarely missing targets even from great range, and even could even hit multiple targets simultaneously, though it required much focus to do so.
- Master Acrobat/Climber: Having grown up in a heavily mountainous region of Norway and being a lifelong Sailor, Eivor was a skilled climber and freerunner, able to scale Saint Peter's Church as well as natural elements with relative ease.
- Stealth Mastery: Despite being usually keen for up front confrontations, Eivor was also highly adept at stealth and was able to silently assassinate her targets undetected in addition to being able to remain hidden from her enemies in shrubbery and haystacks. After gaining the Hidden Blade, Eivor was taught how to use it by Basim and quickly mastered it. Eivor also learned the Hidden Ones' techniques of blending in with crowds and mimicking activities to avoid suspicions. In Fancia, Eivor preferred stealth more than face to face, showing her stealth skills had advanced to a greater level, her ability to disguise allowing her to sneak into various situations and assassinate targets.
Trivia[]
- Her name is derived from either proto-Norse auja or warjaʀ, with the former meaning "good luck", and latter meaning "defender".
- Eivor can be chosen to be male; canonically, however, Eivor is female.
- The canon choice for her Animus representation on the other hand, is "Let Animus Decide", which mainly portrayed her as female as stated previously and male while she relives memories of her past Isu self Odin.
- Though not intentional Eivor is considered one of the overarching antagonists of the franchise due to her role in unwittingly helping King Alfred dismantle the Order of the Ancients which permitted him the freedom to recreate the organization into the Templar Order, and their successor group Abstergo Industries. Trapping Basim within the Yggdrasill chamber also enabled his return into modern times allowing him to carry out his yet-unknown motives which resulted in Layla's death.
- It's been speculated that Eivor could be an ancestor of Assassin's Creed III protagonist Ratonhnhaké:ton aka Connor making her an ancestor of the franchise's overall protagonist Desmond Miles. This is due to the recent revelation that Eivor has modern descendants, meaning that She had children. As Eivor is not depicted at any point as having a family in Ravensthorpe during the game's or companion novels' events, this means that Eivor likely had a relationship with someone from the tribe she settled down with, who are confirmed to be the ancestors to Connor's tribe. With 900 years separation between Valhalla and AC3, the family lines within the tribe would have all crossed over at least once by the time of AC3's events, making it very unlikely that Connor is not descended from Eivor, through his mother.
