“ | El Toro Fuerte never removes his mask! | „ |
~ El Toro's catchphrase. |
El Toro Fuerte is a Mexican masked luchador (wrestler), and a recurring character in the animated Jackie Chan Adventures series. In his first appearance, he's regarded as the greatest wrestler of Mexico, but he secretly holds the rank because of the super strength-granting Ox Talisman. His encounter with Jackie, Jade and the Dark Hand inspires him to give up the Talisman and win his fights honestly. He also takes as his apprentice his greatest fan Paco after his decision wins back the boy's admiration. After that he assists the Chans occasionally, especially as a member of the J-Team.
El Toro is voiced by Miguel Sandoval.
Appearance[]
El Toro Fuerte is a tall man, being about a foot taller than Jackie but very short compared to Tohru. Although he is muscular in his arms and legs, he has a very stocky build. His main attire consists of a wrestling outfit consisting of a black tank top, yellow leggings, black boots, and his signature red mask with yellow designs. He also wears red arm bands. Occasionally, he would wear a black suit albeit with his mask still on. Beneath is mask he is bald, but has a small chin beard.
Personality[]
El Toro was at first a dishonest liar because of his using the Ox Talisman to cheat in wrestling matches. After his encounter with Jackie, he decided to fight honorably from then on. He is also shown to be impulsive as well as a here and now type. When he first saw Tohru in season 2, having previously encountered him as a member of the Dark Hand, he attacked him impulsively, wrecking Uncle's store in the process. Upon hearing Jackie saying Tohru switched sides, El Toro immediately ceased fighting and apologized for his behavior. At the end of that episode, he even gave Tohru a belly bump as a celebration of their victory over the Dark Hand.
Like Jackie with Jade, El Toro's main concern is for Paco's safety. For the rest of the series, he has proven himself as a good person who possesses a strong sense of justice. It is this trait (along with his raw strength) that makes him a valuable member of J-Team.
History[]
Season 1[]
Jackie and Jade first met El Toro in Mexico on their search for Shendu's Ox Talisman. The temple in which it had been originally stored was empty, however; by unknown means El Toro had come into the possession of the talisman, which bestows superhuman strength upon its wielder, and worn it on his mask ever since as his personal symbol. Both Jackie and the Enforcers wound up unsuccessful in their attempt to take the talisman. Shendu therefore summoned the Shadowkhan, who removed the mask with a suction device.
As El Toro kneeled on the ground, defeated and dejected, the Enforcers took Jackie with them to throw him out of their plane in midair. Jade pleaded to El Toro for help, convincing him to trust in his own strength. Boarding the plane, El Toro grappled with Tohru - a fight which only ended when Jade inadvertently knocked out the pilot and subsequently had to land the plane by herself. When she offered El Toro the Ox Talisman to bring down Tohru, he refused, stating that he would rather meet defeat in honor than to win by cheating. Although he (along with Jackie) were immediately afterwards knocked to the ground by Tohru, El Toro regained his standing in the eyes of his most faithful fan, the boy Paco, whom El Toro took in as his apprentice.
Season 2[]
Later, Viper, El Toro Fuerte, and Paco have all been called to the shop by Jade, and once the surprise subsides enough to allow conversation, Jade explains that she called them to form an unbeatable group: the J-Team. Jackie denies that any of them have any business getting involved in this, but just then, Uncle announces he has identified the missing book: a description of ancient artifacts in Tibet.
Uncle and Jackie trail the Dark Hand, telling Tohru to watch after Jade and mind the shop. Jade, however, catches her own flight to Tibet and brings the rest of the J-Team with her, forcing Tohru to accompany her. By chance, Jackie is staying in the same lodgings as the Dark Hand, and he notices them without being detected. When everyone else is asleep, he tries to steal back the talismans, but runs into Viper, who is doing the very same. Their argument causes them to drop the talismans and wake up the Enforcers. While Hak Foo engages specifically at Jackie, Viper calls the reinforcements with Tohru being the first to enter the scene. The enforcers are happy to see Tohru alive and well, but are greeted sarcastically and tossed aside by him. Realizing he has turned against them, El Toro enters and tosses the enforcers into the next room along with the talismans, and causing them to beat up the entire J-Team, and make their escape with Shendu.
Season 3[]
As the J-Team is assembled for the second time, Jade gives each member a codename, but Jackie refuses to allow her to join. Viper promises to go rollerblading with her when they get back. However, Jade once again defies Jackie and appears during the tournament. El Toro is up first for jujitsu but forgets he's not doing lucha libre, as he attempts to perform his "bounce-off-the-ropes" maneuver and falls out of the ring.
As night draws in, Jackie is attacked by the referee during his search, but manages to defeat his opponent in addition to unlocking the hidden passage. He then spots Jade crawl into a vent and follows. But he accidentally emerges right out into the middle of the tour. Enraged at his intrusion, Chang demands an explanation from Jackie, who tries to explain he is looking for Jade (his niece, not the stone), but Chang suspects him of being a spy and orders Tohru to dispose of him. As Tohru picks Jackie up, instead of throwing him on some stalagmites below, he throws him at Chang and the competition winners. Jackie and Tohru make a break for it and try prying open a set of metal doors, only for Jade to open them from the other side, having discovered Chang's stolen collection of jade artifacts. El Toro and Viper join the party and they and Jackie have a re-match against the competition winners who had beaten them in the tournament. Viper and Tohru later hold up a rope for El Toro to properly perform his wrestling move on his opponent. The Mexican wrestler and Tohru then slam tackle Jackie's opponent on his behalf, due to his injured hands.
The search for the Talisman-powered animals continues in Mexico where Jackie and Jade get help from El Toro and his faithful sidekick Paco. They discover the Noble Rat in an abandoned silver mine, but its power is activated and brings a statue of Quetzalcoatl (a Mayan god) to life. A race for the rat and its talisman power ensues when Daolon Wong and his minions come seeking the rat as well.
Season 4[]
As Jade drags Jackie out of his room to go trick or treating, El Toro and Paco arrive to join in on the holiday. Paco’s costume is a luchador, but his attempts to spar with Jade are halted by El Toro, who reminds him that there is no wrestling outside of the ring. However, Paco takes the message the wrong way and is disheartened when Jade calls his costume not scary. Left alone, Paco finds the Oni Mask on Jackie’s desk and is intrigued by it.
After Paco wears the mask, completely unaware about the dark power it possesses, Tarakudo approaches him and tells the young boy how he can be scary for Halloween. The next time Paco gets to a house, he has Squid Khans with him, thanks to Tarakudo telling him how to summon his tribe of Shadowkhan. Using his Squid Khan, Paco gets the man’s candy, which pleases Tarakudo as that meant Paco has passed the first test. Jackie, Jade, and El Toro confront Tarakudo, but Paco tells El Toro that he is following Tarakudo as his new idol, even calling himself “El Paco Diablo”. Surrounded by the Squid Khan, El Toro and Jackie fight the Shadowkhan as a worried Jade hopes Uncle has the mask removal spell ready.
Back in the neighbourhood, Jackie and El Toro get overwhelmed by the Squid Khan’s tentacles as Paco boasts about their power. Tarakudo sees Jade in her Oni costume and assumes that she is planning to return to his side as the Queen of the Shadowkhan. Jade tries to take advantage of the assumption by trying to command the Squid Khans, but it doesn’t work. Angry that Jade is still trying to outdo him, Paco has the Squid Khan kidnap her and away from the Jackie and El Toro. Before Tarakudo can do anything more to Jackie, El Toro throws an onion at the Oni King to drive the latter away.
Paco and the Squid Khans take Jade to the school, where he manages to scare everyone, and he wins contest. Afterwards, Paco turns to jade and menacingly goes after her to remove her “mask”. Fortunately for Jade, El Toro and Jackie comes to her aid and the former reminds Paco about the no wrestling outside the ring rule. In response, Paco has his Squid Khan create a wrestling ring so he can fight El Toro. Meanwhile, Uncle and Tohru find the kid with the octopus tentacle and do a forced swap.
Back at the school, Paco knocks El Toro around and restrains Jackie and Jade so they do not interfere. As Paco wails on El Toro, he plans on removing the latter’s mask as part of his victory. Uncle and Tohru arrive with the mask removal spell, but they are restrained, and the spell is spilled onto the floor. El Toro tries to dip his hands into the spell, but Paco has a Squid Khan restrain the former like the others. El Toro begs Paco to remove the mask and stop his rampage. El Toro’s words manage to make it to Paco through the mask’s influence, but the latter is reluctant to remove the Oni Mask as the former has always told him to never remove his own mask. However, El Toro decides to break his own rule and takes his mask off, giving Paco the confidence to remove the Oni Mask. Despite the spirit of the Oni Mask trying to keep Paco at bay, the latter fights through the influence and dips his hands into the spell before ripping it off.
Paco gives Jackie back the Oni Mask and El Toro commends the former for his strong spirit. As a token of gratitude, Jade gives Paco the trophy as tonight, he was the champ.
Powers and Abilities[]
As a professional luchador, El Toro is a very capable melee fighter. His natural strength, even when unboosted by the Ox Talisman, enables him to hold his own even against the more massive Tohru. His strength is further exemplified when he was shown to lift a bed with all three Enforcers on it and launch them with such force, that they broke through two brick walls.
Due to his wrestling background, he mainly prefers to use grappling moves, takedowns, and body slams as opposed to striking moves. He is also fast which differentiates him from the slower Tohru.
Weaknesses[]
El Toro is revealed to have a fear of mice and rats.
