Synopsis

Background[]

Eleanor Shellstrop was born on October 14, 1982 in Phoenix, Arizona to Doug and Donna Shellstrop. Both of Eleanor's parents are neglectful parents who don't care about Eleanor. In 1989, Donna left her dog locked in her car, resulting in the dog dying from heat exhaustion. Donna initially tries lying to Eleanor that the dog went to a farm, but coldly reveals that the dog is actually buried underneath the deck when Eleanor asks Donna if they could visit the dog sometime. Donna that asks Eleanor for another bottle of wine.

Because of the neglectfulness of her parents, Eleanor was eventually convinced that in order to survive, she had to work alone. By the age of 14, on top of going to school, Eleanor had to maintain two jobs and wear hair extensions in order to earn a living. She saved up enough money to legally be emancipated. On October 14, 1996, on Eleanor's 14th birthday, Eleanor had her parents sign her emancipation papers. From then on, she maintained little-to-no contact with her parents.

Eleanor went to Adobe High School for the next few years. During this time, she maintained no friendships or relationships, sat by herself during lunch, and didn't join any group. She was voted "Most Likely to Die Young and Unaccomplished". After high school, Eleanor moved to Tempe, Arizona to attend an university before moving back to Phoenix Arizona. Around 2002, Eleanor met Kevin who Eleanor wanted to have sex with. Kevin wasn't into Eleanor and declined, which made Eleanor think Kevin was gay, even when he wasn't.

Eleanor turned down a high-paying job at a hotel because she was expected to befriend her co-workers. She later became a con salesperson working for a shady pharmaceutical company run by Wallace. At one point, her co-workers tried to celebrate Eleanor's birthday, but Eleanor declined just so she wouldn't owe anything to her co-workers.

Despite not wanting to maintain relationships, she eventually formed a drinking circle which she'd participate with in a bar every Tuesdays and Thursdays. She would always be the one to draw out of hat of cards who would be the designated driver. However, even when she draws herself, she is never the designated driver. This eventually leads to the drinking circle to use a system where each member draws a card. Eleanor, depressed that she has to be designated driver, meets Samuel. They both become infatuated with each other and Eleanor ditches the drinking circle, causing her to be banned from ever participating in the drinking circle.

Afterwards, Eleanor's father, Doug, dies, likely due to drinking. Eleanor and Samuel go to his funeral and mourn over him. Donna comes along and initially pretends to be Eleanor's sister but fails and reveals that she is actually Eleanor's mother. Donna tries roast Doug while Eleanor wants her to leave her alone as she is trying to mourn over the only father she ever had.

Samuel recommends to Eleanor that they stop frequenting a coffee shop because the manager has sexually harassed women during interviews. Eleanor doesn't care because she believes the world is full of badness and nobody can do anything about it. This contrasts to Samuel's belief that people should do the right thing despite their hardships. Eleanor then reveals that she looked into Samuel's messages to his mother about Samuel having second thoughts of his relationship with Eleanor. This leads to Eleanor and Samuel breaking up.

Sometime after this, Brittany, Madison, and few other people move into Eleanor's apartment and become Eleanor's roommates. Paula Ouncerock, an acquaintance of Eleanor, asks Eleanor if she can look over Paula's dog, Lester. While looking after Lester, an unnamed roommate convinces Eleanor to go to a Rhianna concert. Eleanor gives Lester access to all the dog food, leading to Lester to eat all of it and become morbidly obese and unable to walk. Paula meets Eleanor in the streets sometime later and reveals Lester's condition and that she no longer trusts Eleanor. Paula presumably has the vets mercy kill Lester afterwards.

Madison is vain and likes wearing a specific dress. Without Madison knowing, Eleanor tries on the dress and rips it. Madison finds out about the dress being ripped and sues her dry cleaning business. She wins the lawsuit, but becomes a victim of harassments, becoming known as "the dress bitch." Brittany sells T-shirts related to the phenomenon. Eleanor initially feels remorse, but joins in after getting pressured by Brittany. Madison finds out about the T-shirts, but doesn't find out about who is truly behind them.

In October 13, 2016, before her last day on Earth, Eleanor throws a paper cup at and insults an environmentalist who wanted to talk about the environment. The next day, on her birthday, she went shopping depressed at a supermarket. She reads a magazine that tells her to live everyday like its her last. She throws on the magazine on the ground ironically believing she will live forever. When leaving, the same environmentalist from the prior day is at the door and still wants to talk about the environment. Eleanor insults the environmentalist and turns to leaver as the environmentalist asks why Eleanor is like this. Eleanor, insulted, turns around to confront the environmentalist and drops a margarita mix on the ground. As she picks up the margarita mix, a line of carts runs over Eleanor. Eleanor manages to grab onto the carts, but is unfortunately run over by a truck that was delivering pills for treating erectile dysfunction.

Season 1[]

Eleanor wakes up in a waiting room. Michaelopens the door to the waiting room and motions Eleanor to Michael's office. Michael explains to Eleanor that she is dead and is now in the Good Place, which is an afterlife place that very few people get to go to. Anyone is isn't genuinely good throughout their life and done wonderful things for everyone they are around is sent to the Bad Place. Eleanor is praised by Michael for being a death row lawyer and an activist for the greater good. In Eleanor's new house, Michael introduces Eleanor to her soulmate, Chidi Anagonye who was professor of moral philosophy.

When Michael leaves the house, Eleanor reveals to Chidi what her actual self was like during her time alive, much to Chidi's disapproval. Later on, Michael introduces Eleanor and Chidi to Tahani Al-Jamil, a wealthy philanthropist, and Jianyu Li, a silent Buddhist monk. Tahani reveals that she is going to be throwing a party for everyone in the Good Place neighborhood in Tahani's mansion. During the party, Chidi tries and fails to find out one good thing about Eleanor, while Eleanor tries and fails to prove that not everyone in the Good Place are genuinely good people. She hogs all the shrimp and makes petty insults about many people in the party, especially Tahani because of her accent and condescending nature. The next day, a chaos situation throws the neighborhood in panic. Because many things in the chaos situation represent Eleanor's actions in the party, Eleanor realizes that she needs to learn to be a good person in order to fit in and not get caught. She begs Chidi for help teaching Eleanor how to be a good person and not get caught, which Chidi reluctantly accepts.

Later that day, Michael sets up a device that allows people to fly. Tahani starts an event where people help Michael fix up the town following the chaos sequence. While Eleanor wants to fly, Chidi forces Eleanor to help with the fixing up of the town by picking up garbage. Eleanor's garbage bag breaks and seeing the flying event almost being over, she hides all her garbage in order to fly. Just as she is about to fly, a trash rain starts, injuring the people that were flying. Chidi confronts Eleanor, who tries to make up excuses in a futile attempt to defend herself. Chidi determines that Eleanor is way too selfish to improve and gives up on her.

That night, Eleanor ends up picking up all the garbage and putting them in bags, partly be cause she wanted to trash Gunnar and Antonio (who she considers to be crazy) though doesn't end up doing, but also partly because she felt remorse for her actions that resulted in the trash rain. Chidi, upon discovering that Eleanor picked up all the trash decides to help Eleanor learn to become a good person again. That night, Eleanor is sent a note saying that she doesn't belong in the Good Place, indicating that someone knows Eleanor's secret.

Though Eleanor initially believes that Tahani sent the note, after ghosting Tahani, realizes that Tahani likely did not send the note. Thanks to Chidi, Eleanor believes that she subconsciously wrote the note out of guilt. Michael makes Eleanor his assistant in order to help find out what is going with the neighborhood. One night, Eleanor is sent another letter telling her to meet the sender at the town square. At the town square, Jianyu, who apparently can talk, reveals that he wrote and sent the letters. He figured out Eleanor's secret at the party. Jianyu reveals that he is actually Jason Mendoza, a failed DJ and drug-dealer from Jacksonville, Florida who went along with being considered a silent monk to not get caught.

The next day, Chidi finds out about Jason after Jason plays EDM music loudly in the neighborhood. Chidi and Eleanor are worried that Jason might expose Eleanor. At a gala hosted by Tahani celebrating the opening of a restaurant where everybody is served their favorite food, when asked about the story related to his favorite food, Jason is about to reveal Dirty Doug's restaurant. To prevent this, Eleanor wrecks a cake to create another chaos event. A sinkhole opens in the restaurant, forcing everyone to evacuate. Jason is taken back to the mansion, where Eleanor convinces Jason to take the class with Chidi to learn about how to be a better person in order to not get exposed.

Though Eleanor is pleased with finding herself improving, Chidi is stressed out from the lessons. The sinkhole is getting bigger, forcing Michael to quarantine everyone in their houses. Because they house was near the sinkhole; Bart, an expert in identity fraud, and Nina, a marriage counseler, are placed in Eleanor and Chidi's house, stressing them more. When Bart and Nina find out that Eleanor and Chidi are arguing, they console. Chidi reveals that he has never had a true relationship before. Eleanor, remorseful towards Chidi, decides to give him leisure time, setting it up as Chidi's vision of paradise. This act of kindness fixes the sinkhole.

However, Michael doesn't know why the sinkhole fixed itself. He assigns Eleanor with helping him investigate. Eleanor distracts Michael from the investigation by treating him like a friend. Afterwards, Michael comes to the conclusion that he is the problem and decides to "retire". Though Eleanor is initially apathetic towards, after realizing that Michael is going to be tortured for all eternity, Eleanor decides to kill Janet who is the only that can initiate Michael's eternal torture, much to Chidi's disbelief. However Janet is programmed with a convincing desperate cry for mercy whenever anyone approaches who kill button at a beach, making Eleanor unsure of whether or not she really should kill Janet. Chidi ends up killing her trying to prevent Jason to press the button. Janet is rebooted with no memories and impaired abilities. Michael announces that his retirement is postponed until he can find out who killed Janet. Eleanor, feeling remorse for the entire neighborhood, reveals to them, including Michael, that she is not supposed to be in the Good Place.

Michael interviews Chidi, Tahani, and Jason about Eleanor and Janet's death. After some improvement of Janet, Michael manages to get a file about Eleanor, in which it is revealed that Eleanor's worst action was ruining a friend's dress which resulted in a frivolous lawsuit that bankrupted innocent dry cleaners and made her friend into a laughing-stalk. As Eleanor is about to board the train to go to the Bad Place, Chidi reveals that he killed Janet to Michael and that Eleanor has been improving and should be able stay. As they stop the train, Trevor, a representative of the Bad Place, reveals that there is another "true" Eleanor Shellstrop that switched spots with the "fake" Eleanor.

There is discussion among the Bad Place demons over the fate of the Eleanors, with Michael trying to defend the "fake" Eleanor and Trevor trying to make her feel down. The "True" Eleanor makes the "fake" Eleanor realize that she is in love with Chidi. She confesses this to Chidi, though before Tahani confesses her love to Chidi after realizing who Jason truly was. They eventually realize that it isn't true love following a wedding between Janet and Jason. Tahani eventually proposes to the Bad Place demons that there is a way to prove that Eleanor has improved. By having her incur points up until she reaches 1.2 million points before Shawn comes to the Good Place to decide Eleanor's fate. However, she quickly realizes that her actions don't matter as it comes with a corrupt motivation. Eleanor apologizes to everyone through letter and plans to hijack the train to go to the Bad Place. Janet reveals that there is a Medium Place. When Shawn comes to the Bad Place; Eleanor, Janet, and Jason hijack to take the train to the Medium Place.

They make to the Medium Place, whose only inhabitant being Mindy St. Claire, a selfish lawyer whose actions prior to her death led to the formation of the largest charity organization. Meanwhile, the trial of the Eleanors is carried out in the Good Place. Despite the pleas of Chidi, Tahani, and Michael; Shawn decides that if Eleanor doesn't come back in a couple of days, she will be sent to the Bad Place. Eleanor ends up missing the deadline. Shawn, after he and Michael finds out about Jason, decides that the Bad Place is owed two people and that any inhabitant can decide to go to the Bad Place.

The stressful discussion between Eleanor, Chidi, Tahani, Jason, and "real" Eleanor makes Eleanor realize that Shawn can't call the train to the Bad Place because they are already in the Bad Place. The entire neighborhood was an experiment by Michael to see if humans could be tortured forever while still thinking that they are in the Good Place. After a remark by Eleanor, Michael realizes that his problem was that he grouped the damned souls together and he needed to spread them out. As Michael is about to reset the neighborhood and wipe the memories of the damned souls clean; Eleanor rips a page out, writes something on it, and gives it to Janet. In the next reboot of the neighborhood, after a tour around the neighborhood, Janet gives the amnesiac Eleanor the page which says "Eleanor - Find Chidi".

Season 2[]

Michael is only given one more chance by Shawn, who believes that the experiment will fail and Michael will be "retired". Eleanor is given the note Janet. Eleanor eventually finds Chidi during the party, who is occupied with his own situation and can't help Eleanor. The demons planned for them to get Eleanor drunk. Eleanor is eventually forced to make speech, but because of the demon's failures, Tahani, who is unsatisfied with her soulmate, Thomas, gets drunk instead and indirectly saves Eleanor from giving the speech. Eleanor reveals Chidi the note, which was apparently taken from one of Chidi's books, making him suspect that they met before. At Eleanor's house, Eleanor admits to Chidi that she doesn't belong at the Good Place. Michael, Tahani, Jason, and their supposed soulmates arrive at the house. Tahani and Jason display their unsatisfication with the place. Eleanor realizes that this all some "prank show" and according to the note, its prank show they've been in before. Michael notices the note and realizes why everything went wrong immediately. Michael resets the neighborhood, but lies to Shawn, saying that they just got done with the chaos sequence.

Michael reboots the neighborhood over 800 times, but each, Eleanor (and in one instance, Jason) always figures out they are in the Bad Place. Eventually, on the 802nd iteration, Eleanor and Chidi discover the workers are complaining about Michael and his experiment. Eleanor, Chidi, and Janet run away to the Medium Place through a train. Their, Mindy reveals that this is the twelfth time they have gone to the Medium Place. They always go back from the Medium Place with a plan and they always fail. In many instances, Eleanor and Chidi would form a sexual relationship. In one instance, one that Mindy actually recorded, Chidi and Eleanor declared mutual love for each other. Back in the neighborhood, the demons go on strike with Vicky (the demon that played as the "real" Eleanor Shellstrop) heading the strike. Vicky threatens to reveal the attempts to Shawn if she doesn't head the next attempt. Eleanor and the humans confront Michael and tells them that Michael will just keep failing every time. Michael then offers an alliance.

Michael has the humans join him in his plan, he will reboot the neighborhood but the humans will secretly keep their memories. If they refuse, they will be sent to literal hell. Michael also claims that he can get the humans into the Good Place. Eleanor is initially distrustful towards Michael and plans to run away to the Medium Place, when Michael tells her that Chidi never refused to help her everytime she asked him. Eleanor reluctantly goes along with the plan on the condition that Michael takes Chidi's classes. However, because Michael is immortal, he doesn't care about ethics. Chidi brings up the possibility of "retirement", causing Michael to go into an extensional crisis and eventually, a midlife crisis. Eleanor consoles Michael, saying that feeling sad over death is important to humans. Michael's crisis ends and Chidi's class continues.

Chidi tells the students about the trolley problem and the dilemma that comes with it. In order to "engage" with it, Michael puts Eleanor and Chidi through simulations of the trolley problem, much to Chidi's horror. Eleanor realizes that Michael is deliberately torturing Chidi, resulting Chidi expelling Michael. Michael tries to win back Chidi's trust by bribing him and humans. However, Chidi doesn't fall for it, forcing Michael to apologize sincerely to Chidi in order to come back to the class. Meanwhile, Janet is counseling Tahani and Jason, who have fallen in love. Because Janet was previously in love with Jason, she is subconsciously lying that she supports the marriage between Tahani and Jason. This threatens the neighborhood because Janets are not supposed to lie. Michael and Janet seek Eleanor's advice, who recommends a rebound relationship for Janet. Janet creates Derek, an infantile-minded AI and boyfriend for Janet. Michael fears the existence of Derek will expose his plan to Vicky and the demons.

Michael seeks the advice of Eleanor and Chidi while Tahani and Jason are on trip to a resort. Janet's relationship with Derek deteriorates and Janet is asked to marry Jason and Tahani together. Chidi recommends telling Tahani and Jason about Janet's past relationship with Jason. Eleanor does so and Janet deactivates Derek. Eleanor reveals to Chidi that she has been watching Mindy's video of Eleanor and Chidi confessing their love for each other. Eleanor and Chidi currently don't have any romantic thoughts about each other at the moment. Michael asks Eleanor for advice about ethics. She says that doing the right thing is awarding in terms of emotion and that Michael is becoming more human everyday. Later, Shawn comes to Michael's office.

Shawn congratulates Michael for his successful experiment and promotes him, not knowing about Michael's 802 attempts. They hold a roasting ceremony to "reveal" to the humans that they are in the Bad Place. The team is initially debating about exposing Michael to Shawn or running away to the Medium Place. Eleanor realizes that Michael named-dropped Kierkegaard who was known for the phrase "leap to faith" and that Michael encoded a plan into the roast speech. Janet retrieves Derek as a decoy to launch the train while the humans and Janet hide underneath it; making the demons think that the humans escaped. Vicky was framed for releasing Janet as Janet was cuffed prior to the train going and is put into a cocoon by Shawn. The demons leave the neighborhood and Michael congratulates the humans for going along with the plan.

Michael builds a hot-air balloon that is supposed to take the humans to the Good Place. However, Michael eventually admits that he is stalling because he does not know how to get the humans to the Good Place. The only way for humans to get to the Good Place is by being a good person while alive. Eleanor admits to Chidi that she has feelings for him, while Chidi is having complicated feelings on the matter and wishes they met in more conventional circumstances. They throw a party and Michael comes up with a plan. They go to Judge Gen, who is the supreme overseer of the afterlife, to ask her to take the humans into the Good Place. However, her chambers is located in the Neutral Zone, meaning the humans will have to travel through the Bad Place to get to Gen.

They incapacitate a Bad Janet to have Janet conduct the train to the Bad Place. The humans hide in a museum to formulate a plan. A reception is unexpectedly held there and the humans are forced to don disguises of demons to not get caught. Chidi is initially unwilling to lie, but Eleanor reminds Chidi of moral particularism to convince him to go along with the plan. Their disguises are exposed when the main exhibition about Michael's "accomplishment" is opened up, revealing what the humans look like. The humans, Janet, and Michael are forced to escape. They manage to reach the portal to Gen's chamber as Shawn is pursuing them. They realize that they are one badge short of all of them being able to go into the portal. Michael gives his badge to Eleanor and pushes her through the portal as Shawn reaches them.

The four humans arrive at the Gen's chambers and Eleanor reveals Michael's sacrifice. Gen agrees to take them to the Good Place if they all pass their individual personality tests. Eleanor's test is that she and Chidi get to go to the Good Place and they can go without Tahani and Jason. Chidi says its ethical to leave them behind, making Eleanor realize that this Chidi is not the real Chidi. Eleanor decides not to go through the portal; passing her test. Unfortunately, the three other humans failed their tests meaning they still have to go to the Bad Place; which Eleanor accepts. Before Gen can send them to the Bad Place, Michael and Janet arrive, having escaped from Shawn's imprisonment.

Michael argues that since the human have shown improvement which was never thought of by the immortal beings before, the afterlife system is flawed. Gen decides to have each human put into their separate Medium Places for a million years until Gen can figure out a way. Eleanor opposes this, considering unjust. After some coercion by Michael, Gen decides to have all four humans have their memories of the afterlife wiped and time on Earth rewinds.

In the new timeline, Eleanor is saved from her death at the hands of Michael, and Eleanor has an epiphany. She adopts a new kinder personality and devotes her time to environmentalism. However, this results in her losing a friend, becoming an outcast, and getting caught in a lawsuit. She gives up six months after her death and lives her original lifestyle for the next six months. On October 14, 2017, her birthday, she goes to the bar to get drunk. At the bar, Michael is posing as a bartender without Gen knowing. Michael questions Eleanor's morality. When Eleanor asks Michael what she owes him for the drink, Michael says the question is "what do we owe to each other?" At home, Eleanor looks up the phrase and discovers a lecture by Chidi. Eleanor travels to St. John's University in Australia and meets Chidi in his office.

Season 3[]

Eleanor tells Chidi about how she was a jerk who tried to be good for six months before falling back on in her jerk-like ways. She asks for help from Chidi how to become a good person. Chidi agrees to help because he was given advice from a librarian (who was actually Michael) to help someone in order to feel better about himself following the injury of his friend thanks to his advice of weight loss. Chidi and his girlfriend, a neurologist named Simone Garnett, forms a joint-study thesis of people who have had near-death experiences who are trying to become a better person as a result of the experiences. Along with Eleanor, Tahani and Jason join after some convincing from a disguised Michael. However, Shawn finds out of exploit because of Michael going through the door and has Trevor infiltrate their joint-study under the guise of a human being.

Trevor threatens the experiment while convincing Chidi that his friendship with the members will result in tampered results, and smothering the subjects with many overtures of friendship. Eleanor is saddened when Chidi stops acting as Eleanor's friend and doesn't participate in the next meeting. Chidi convinces Eleanor that he is still her friend; making Eleanor come back to the study. Chidi receives a letter supposedly from Trevor saying that he was quit participating the experiment. In reality, Michael and Janet tried to stop Trevor, but was discovered by Gen who banished Trevor into the void and renounced the experiment. Michael and Janet managed to escape back to Earth.

Michael and Janet manipulate the study to keep the humans together for a year. One of those methods is by giving Eleanor a winning lottery ticket so she wouldn't look for a job. They also made Tahani fall in love with Larry and when she decides to go to London with Larry, Chidi decides to disband the joint-study so he can find new participants. This results in Eleanor having mental breakdown and trashing the farewell party following the disbandment. Simone consoles Eleanor and tells her that the reason why had a mental breakdown is because the joint-study was the first time she ever had a group to connect with and Eleanor didn't want to lose it. Chidi decides that the team can meet back together annually. Afterwards Chidi, Eleanor, Tahani, and Jason discover Michael and Janet opening a portal to the afterlife to reset the timeline.

Because they all recognize Michael as being the one who convinced them to join the joint-study, Michael is forced to explain the situation and reveals that the humans are now doomed to go into the Bad Place because they know about the afterlife. Eleanor, feeling that anything doesn't matter anymore, attempts to go back to being a bad person. Eleanor finds a wallet and tries to steal money out of it; but is prevented from doing so by her conscious. She tracks down the owner of the wallet and gives back to her. Afterwards, Eleanor confronts Chidi, who is suffering a mental breakdown, and brings him to Michael and Janet. Tahani and Jason join in and they all decide to dedicate the last of their life helping others get to the Good Place. They become a group known as the Soul Squad.

Chidi decides to break up from Simone in order for her to not learn about the afterlife and doom her to damnation. Eleanor aids with this and Chidi successfully does so without hurting Simone's feelings. Janet and Michael inform Eleanor that her mother, Donna, actually faked her death and is now residing Nevada. Eleanor goes there to confront Donna. Donna faked her death in order to avoid paying a drunken charity auction bid. Now going by Diane Tremaine, she lives a seemingly normal life with her boyfriend, David, and daughter, Patricia. Eleanor sets out to prove that Donna is scamming David; both out of Eleanor's prior experience with Donna, and out of jealousy. Eleanor eventually discovers a stash of money Donna kept in case her new life didn't go well and she wanted to bail. Eleanor decides not to gloat and instead convinces Donna to enjoy her new life and put the money towards improving Patricia's life.

Michael tells Eleanor that in one of the reboots of neighborhood; she was in love with Chidi. Michael shows Eleanor memories of this where Eleanor and Chidi become suspicious of Michael. They ran away to the Medium Place before coming back to confront Michael, who simply rebooted the neighborhood afterwards. Eleanor believes that her relationship with Chidi was manipulated by Michael during that reboot. Michael points out that he was unable to predict many of Eleanor's actions during that time. After a brief argument about whether or not free will exists, Michael advises to Eleanor that she believes that there is no free will because she doesn't want to be vulnerable. They mutually apologize and the Soul Squad regroups in Arizona.

The humans wait at a bar while Michael and Janet investigate Doug Forcett (the only human who accurately guessed the afterlife system). Michael and Janet come back after finding out that Doug Forcett's life is miserable because of his fear of the afterlife system and find that the humans have been abducted by demons. Janet fights the demons off but are overwhelmed and are forced to retreat to Janet's void, causing the humans' deaths. Michael suspects that the afterlife system is flawed and goes to investigate the point-system accountants' office in the Neutral Zone as the humans (who have taken on the form of Janets) wait in Janet's void.

Eleanor confronts Chidi about their prior romantic relationship, though Chidi repeatedly denies feeling love for Eleanor. Eleanor has an identity crisis that threatens Janet's void, prompting Chidi to list off Eleanor's memories and the good thing she has done. Eleanor and Chidi kiss and all the humans come back in their original forms. They are ejected out of Janet's void and are in the point-system accountants' office where Michael and Janet are at. Michael reveals that humans have not been in the Good Place for over 500 years and that he believes that the Bad Place demons have tampered with the points-system. Michael steals the book of Dougs (an informational book containing information of everyone named Doug; both living and deceased) and Soul Squad escape into a pneumatic tube leading to the Good Place office.

They pose as points-system accountants from the Neutral Zone to trick the Good Place committee into letting them in. While Michael voices his concern about the points-system being hacked by the Bad Place demons, Eleanor and Chidi go on a romantic date that culminates into them having sex in a closet. Meanwhile Michael is dismayed that the Good Place committee is going to take 400 years just picking investigators. After Tahani fails to calm down Janet and Jason, Michael realizes that the Bad Place demons didn't sabotage the points system. The points system unfairly counts unintended consequences against humans. A member of the Good Place committee realizes that the visitors aren't from the Neutral Zone after hearing Tahani, Jason, and Janet cry (neutral Janets are supposed to be emotionless) and seeing Chidi and Eleanor walking into the room announcing them having sex. The member is about to report them to Gen, which Michael replies that he already did. The Soul Squad goes through a portal to meet up with Gen at the Interdimensional Hole of Pancakes.

Gen is told by the Soul Squad that because human life is so complicated, it is impossible to be good enough to enter the Good Place. After a speech by Jason, Gen reluctantly teleports to Earth to live in it for thirty years as a human. She reappears in IHOP and tells the team that they are right that life in Earth is complicated which puts humans at a disadvantage. She pulls Shawn into the meeting, who casts doubt on whether or not humans are good enough than the points-system suggests. Chidi suggests that the experiment that Michael did be repeated towards four new humans, selected by Shawn, who are moderately bad and have died to see if they improve. The neighborhood is built in the Medium Place near Mindy St. Clair's mansion, with Janet creating the inhabitants. Chidi and Eleanor move in together.

As the first human shows up, Michael seems to be having a panic attack, forcing Eleanor to become head architect with Michael being her subordinate. The first human is John. When Tahani realizes that he was gossip columnist who tormented Tahani, Eleanor, Michael, and Tahani realize that Shawn picked humans who would be the worse for them. The next human picked was Simone, Chidi's ex-girlfriend. Shawn is confronted about this in a meeting and Gen rules that the humans are allowed to have some connection to experimenters and they can have their memories about the experimenters removed. Simone's memories are removed and she is introduced to the afterlife by Eleanor. Chidi believes that his memories of Simone will contaminate the experiment meaning he has to have his memories removed. This means his memories of Eleanor will have to be removed. Before his memories are removed, he and Eleanor watch a presentation of their past memories together. After Chidi's memories are removed and he wakes up in the waiting room, Eleanor welcomes him into the afterlife.

Season 4[]

Eleanor introduces Brent Norwalk; an entitled and racist male chauvinist, and Linda Johannsen; a boring old lady from Norway, to the afterlife. Eleanor finds Brent to be annoying due to his entitlement. Eleanor and Michael tries to learn about Linda and get her to show emotion. Linda punches Eleanor and attacks the residents of the neighborhood. It's revealed Linda is actually a demon in disguised named Chris Baker. He is reported to Gen, who rather than have Shawn picking a replacement human, makes Chidi a subject of the experiment. Later, Simone reveals to Eleanor that she believes that the entire afterlife is just her imagination and that she believes that she is in a coma.

Eleanor tries to get Brent to believe that he doesn't belong in the Good Place through a game show and a chaos sequence. Rather than this worrying Brent, this convinces Brent that he belongs in the Best Place (which doesn't exist). This causes Eleanor to doubt herself in her leadership, increased after overhearing a conversation among the Soul Squad. Michael, using the fact that Eleanor realized she was in the Bad Place in 800 reboots, convinces Eleanor to continue being Head Architect. Eleanor comes up with a plan for both Brent and Simone. Brent is told that he will go to the Best Place if he does good deeds while in the Good Place and tells Simone that she is soulmates with Chidi and has them meet each other.

Chidi is too relaxed to teach other humans to be good, so Eleanor and Michael decide to put him under stress to force him to teach other humans to be good. Jason poses as Jianyu and is introduced to Chidi by Eleanor while in Chidi's library. When Eleanor leaves, Jianyu reveals that he is Jason to Chidi and forces him to teach him to be good and not tell others Jason's secret. Eleanor becomes with obsessed with stressing Chidi out without him knowing to the point that Chidi believes that the universe is punishing him. When Chidi reveals his feelings to Eleanor, Eleanor breaks into tears and realizes that she took the torture too far. When a remorseful Chidi leaves, Eleanor reveals to Michael that she knows that her acts were irrational but was angry towards Chidi. Chidi relieves his stress through teaching Jason.

Glenn, a demon initially working for Shawn, travels to the neighborhood and reveals to the Soul Squad that Michael is actually Vicky in a skin suit pretending to be Michael. Janet uses a demon lie detector on Glenn, but it backfires and blows Glenn into goo, forcing him to regenerate for years. Michael does not want to reveal himself because his true form is a gigantic and monstrous fire squid. Because he can't prove himself to the humans and Janet, Michael decides to blow himself up. Jason puts magnetic handcuffs on Janet, revealing that she is actually Bad Janet in disguise and has been sabotaging the experiment. Bad Janet is put into custody and Eleanor accepts Michael, with his selflessness winning Eleanor. Michael and Jason depart to the Bad Place to save Janet. Without Janet to help run the simulated humans, they start to act in bizarre ways. Eleanor assigns Tahani with entertaining the subjects in an isolate lake house. Tahani believes that she is only good at hosting parties, but is consoled by Eleanor as Tahani is the only one who is keeping the friendship of the subjects together. Michael and Jason save Janet, putting things back to normal.

On the last day of the year-long experiment, Simone reveals to the subjects that she believes that they are part of an experiment of some sort, using various clues she has gathered. The subjects reveal their secrets and discover a scoreboard in the office that showcases them as experiment subjects. At the town square, in a last-ditch effort, Michael allows Brent to fall into a pit in hopes that the other subjects will bond to save him, but Chidi is the only that attempts to save him. Michael and Eleanor take Chidi and Brent into their office. Chidi reveals that he believes that they are in the Bad Place. Eleanor and Michael laugh evilly and "admits" that they truly are in the Bad Place and they are going to be transferred to the "real" Bad Place. Eleanor and Michael leave the office and watch them through a camera at the waiting room. Brent can't believe that they are in the Bad Place. As the experiment ends, Brent begins to apologize to Chidi before freezing, marking the end of the experiment.

The subjects are held in stasis as the humans await Gen's ruling. The humans share what they have learned from each other and hold fake "funerals for themselves and an unconscious Chidi. At the court hearing, Michael convinces Gen that the points-system is flawed. Gen decides in order to fix this, she has to reboot the entire universe. Janet steals the reboot device and hides it within voids of an army of Janets; forcing Gen to search each one. Eleanor has Michael reboot Chidi with all of his memories intact through a snap so Chidi can propose a better afterlife system. When Chidi is awake, he agrees to help propose a better system.

Chidi and Eleanor initially propose to have most humans go to the Medium Place with only exceptional outliers going to either the Good Place or the Bad Place. Shawn rejects the proposal. The Soul Squad then propose to Gen and Shawn that to have an afterlife system where deceased humans are put through moral tests that reset if the human fails, but with a vague memory of what happened. Shawn still rejects it, but is convinced to support it by Michael after it is made clear that the battle between Shawn and Michael will be over regardless and the Bad Place is failing. Gen abandons her plant to reboot the universe.

As Gen and Michael are setting the new system in place and teaching the new demons, Eleanor is worried that Chidi will not love her because of Eleanor's past. Chidi is worried that he and Eleanor are too different for a relationship. Jason convinces him and Eleanor that since Janet and Jason are in a faithful relationship despite being very different, Chidi and Eleanor can have a faithful relationship. The humans are admitted into the Good Place by Gen for their work at saving humanity from damnation.

In the Good Place, Hypatia of Alexandria, a famous philosopher, reveals to Chidi that everyone in the Good Place has become bored because they are unable to appreciate the good things from the Good Place due to their being no end to their existence in sight. The Good Place committee knew this but could not remedy it. Eleanor proposes that to end their eternal boredom, there be a door where if a human is ready to end their existence, they can walk through the door to end it. Michael creates the door and the inhabitants of the Good Place start appreciating the Good Place more because of this. Eleanor and Chidi cuddle and watch a sunset.

Many eons later, Eleanor suspects that Chidi is about to enter the door to end his existence. Fearing abandonment, Eleanor gives Chidi a tour of the Acropolis of Athens and Paris to convince him not to. At a dinner with Chidi, Eleanor realizes that she is being selfish and lets Chidi make his own decision. After one last night, Chidi is taken to the door to end his existence. Afterwards, Eleanor struggles to find fulfillment in her afterlife. She visits Mindy's house in the Medium Place and tries to convince her to take the test. Mindy doesn't want a stranger to decide her fate. Eleanor reveals to her that Tahani is training to be an architect and will create her test. Mindy accepts Eleanor's request. Feeling fulfilled, Eleanor travels to the door to end her existence. Eleanor witnesses Michael trying to end his existence through walking through the door but failing. Eleanor convinces Gen to make Michael a human so he can feel happy. Afterwards, Eleanor walks through the door to end her existance and becomes a bunch a sparks traveling throughout space. One of the sparks land on a man on Earth who decides to return a wrongfully sent mail to Michael, now known as Michael Realman.
