Hero Overview

ExCUSE me, why am I LIKE THIS?! You don't know me, man! You don't know what I am like! Look what you made me do, jaggoff. Uh oh.
~ Eleanor's last words before her first death.
Michael, the problem in the Neighborhood ... is me. I was brought to the Good Place by mistake; I'm not supposed to be here.
~ Eleanor revealing her true self to Michael.
It took me awhile to figure it out. But just now, as we were all fighting, and yelling at each other, and each one of us demanding we should go to the Bad Place, I thought to myself, "Man, this is torture." And then it hit me. They're never gonna call a train to take us to the Bad Place. They can't. Because we're already here. This is the Bad Place.
~ Eleanor's line that changes the entire story.

Eleanor Shellstrop is the main protagonist of The Good Place. Before her death by getting run over by a line of carts that subsequently get run over by a truck, she was a selfish jerk from Phoenix, Arizona who worked as a con salesperson selling fake medicine to the sick and the elderly.

After her death, Eleanor gets mistakenly placed in heaven-life afterlife known as the Good Place, with a faux pas backstory as a lawyer who got suspects off of a death row. Realizing that if she is exposed, she will end up in the hell-life afterlife known as the Bad place, she asks her soulmate, Chidi Anagonye, a Senegal-born professor of moral philosophy from Australia, to help her get rehabilitated and become a good person.

Eleanor eventually finds out that she, Chidi Anagonye, Tahani Al-Jamil, and Jason Mendoza were placed in an experimental Bad Place neighborhood disguised as Good Place neighborhood in order to torture them for eternity. The architect, a demon named Michael, resets the neighborhood over 800 times, but each time, Eleanor always figures out that she is in the Bad Place. Michael is eventually blackmailed by a co-worker named Vicky, who threatens to expose Michael's failures to Shawn, the senior architect of the Bad Place. This forces Michael to team up with Eleanor and her friends to trick Shawn in thinking that Michael's experiment was a success. After successfully doing so, Michael and his newly formed friends, including Eleanor, decide to go on a quest to get Eleanor and her friends to the Good Place, and eventually, changing the Good Place's system to allow for more fair system of judging humans.

Eleanor Shellstrop is portrayed by Kristen Bell, who also portrayed Queen Anna from Frozen, Veronica Mars from the titular series, and Lucy Stillman from Assassin's Creed.

Personality[]

At an early age, because of her parent's neglectful behavior, Eleanor Shellstrop became convinced that in order to survive, she had to become completely independent and work alone. This would shape her behavior to becoming a selfish jerk in her adult years. During her time on Earth, she believes that the world is full of bad and corruption that nobody can do anything about it. She didn't care about anyone else as a result and was very arrogant and self-absorbed. This leads to her working as a con salesperson for a shady pharmaceutical business. While she does at one point join a drinking circle, she ends up ditching it after meeting and falling in love with Samuel. Eleanor eventually breaks up with Samuel after realizing that Samuel genuinely tries to do good and was having second thoughts about his relationship with Eleanor.

After she dies and gets sent to the Good Place under a faux pas story of being a death row lawyer, she realizes that in order to not get caught and sent to the Bad Place, she seeks out the guidance of her soulmate, Chidi Anagonye, who was a professor of moral philosophy. While initially, Eleanor is still a jerk, she starts showing improvement in her behavior overtime. She becomes genuine friends with Chidi, Tahani Al-Jamil, and Jason Mendoza and becomes more selfless. Her being in the Good Place supposedly causes many chaos events in the neighborhood, causing her to feel remorse for the residents which is something she never did during her time alive.

Throughout the show, Eleanor's memories is rebooted hundreds of times, most of which were during an experiment run by Michael to see if Bad Place residents could be tricked into thinking they are in the Good Place, which always fails because of Eleanor always figuring it out. In almost instances, she seeks out guidance from Chidi and becomes a better person before realizing she is in the Bad Place. She even feels mutual infatuation with Chidi in one reboot.

When her death is prevented by a redeemed Michael, creating a second timeline, Eleanor starts making an active effort to be a good person after realizing that her life is temporary. However, many events in her life end up taking a toll on Eleanor's patience and after six months, she give up. She is then coerced by Michael to go to Chidi's class in Australia to become a better person permanently. Chidi eventually starts a study group along with Tahani and Jason, who were also coerced by Michael, to study if near-death situations can make people want to become a better person. Eleanor feels attachment to the group and becomes friends with the three other members. After Chidi eventually cancels the study group, Eleanor suffers a mental breakdown because it was the first time (in this timeline) she felt attachment to a group.

By the end of the show, Eleanor shows the most improvement out the main characters, being a selfless and caring person. She spends her time in the actual Good Place after fixing how humans are judged in the afterlife spending time with her now-fiancé Chidi. Most of her initial personality is gone and when Chidi is finally ready to end his existence, despite Eleanor's worry, she is willing to accept it and allows Chidi to end his existance. Eventually, after giving Michael a chance of becoming a human and convincing the only resident of the Medium Place, Mindy St. Claire, to take the test for her to go into the Good Place, Eleanor ends her own existence peacefully.

Appearance[]

Eleanor Shellstrop is a young white woman. She is the shortest person of the main characters, standing at around 5'1. She has a slim build and sports blue eyes. She has blonde hair that comes down from the sides of her head. She mostly wears casual clothes; commonly consisting of a pink T-shirt, green shorts, and white shoes.

Skills and Abilities[]

Eleanor Shellstrop has sense of instinct derived from her lone nature brought on by her neglectful parents. She is definitely intelligent, or at the very least, has higher-than-average intelligence as she was able to survive being alone throughout her life, immediately find help trying to become a good person after realizing she doesn't belong in the Good Place, and always figuring out she is actually in the Bad Place in all of Michael's reboot of the neighborhood. She is also a capable leader, being able to spearhead the experiment that ultimately led to fixation of the afterlife system.

Quotes[]

Who has four toothbrushes, like Bill Gates or something? [Store Employee: No, that's like, for a family.] Family? Like, a whole family and their toothbrushes all together? Two slots for the parent toothbrushes and two slots for their kids [Store Employee: Yep.] So the parent toothbrushes can be close to the kid toothbrushes and watch over them and they can all talk about their toothbrush feelings and they can hold their little toothbrush hands when they're sad and make sure no harm ever comes to their little bristles? [Store Employee: Sure.]
~ Eleanor suffering a crisis.
Activist: Hi there. Do you have a second to talk about the environment?

Eleanor: Do you have a second to eat my farts?
[Eleanor tosses her coffee cup at a trashcan but it bounces off and falls on the ground]
Activist: You missed.
Eleanor: [scoffs] Pick it up if you're so horny for the environment.

~ Eleanor the day before her death.
I never found a wallet outside of an iHop, and thought about returning it, but saw the owner lived out-of-state, so just took the cash and dropped the wallet back on the ground.
~ Eleanor to Chidi
When I told a boyfriend something was "no big deal," it meant anything from "I just bought weed from your nephew," to "I secretly befriended your ex-girlfriend last year, things got out of hand, and now I'm her bridesmaid."
~ Eleanor being suspicious of Chidi
Ugh, I hate jazz. Every jazz song is like 40 minutes long. It's like, we get it. You can blow on a trumpet. Wrap it up, Elton John. [Chidi: Famously a piano player.]
~ Eleanor confessing her hatred of jazz
Pobody’s nerfect.
~ Eleanor
I mean, whenever I would do something crappy on Earth, there would be a little tiny voice in the back of my head that would say, 'Eleanor, don't grab that handful of olives from the salad bar. You know, you didn't pay for that,' or 'Eleanor, don't spit those olive pits onto the floor of the grocery store. That's not cool.' Or 'Eleanor, that old man just slipped on your olive pit, and he fell down. Don't use the fact that everyone's distracted to go back and steal more olives.'
~ Eleanor describing her conscious
There are still some people in this world that we care about, so I say we try and help them become good people… why not try? It’s better than not trying, right?
~ Eleanor proposing an idea to the humans.
Ya basic. And that’s okay.
~ Eleanor forgiving Donna
I guess ‘try and enjoy this’ is a better plan than ‘have the anxiety sweats.
~ Eleanor
I proposed a rule that Chidis shouldn’t be allowed to leave because it would make Eleanors sad, and I could do this forever, zip you around the universe showing you cool stuff, and I’d still never find the justification for getting you to stay. Because it’s a selfish rule. I owe it to you to let you go.
~ Eleanor allowing Chidi to end his existance
The wave returns to the ocean. What the ocean does with the water after that is anyone’s guess. But as a very wise not-robot once told me, true joy is in the mystery.
~ Eleanor to Janet near the end of the show.
