Elena Castillo Flores of Avalor (also known as Elena or Princess Elena and eventually Queen Elena) is the titular main protagonist of the 2016 Disney Channel animated series Elena of Avalor and the overarching protagonist of Sofia the First.
She is the daughter of the late King Raul and late Queen Lucia, the older sister of Isabel, the cousin of Esteban, the granddaughter of Francisco and Luisa Flores, and the current Ruler of Avalor.
She is voiced by Aimee Carrero who also portrayed Angie in Level Up, and Adora in She-Ra and The Princesses of Power.
Personality[]
Elena starts her story as an older teenager who's almost over-confident in her ability to rule, as she was born rightful heir to the throne, and quickly forms a team of her own peers as her closest circle. Her powers from the Amulet of Avalor and the Well of Takaina also aren't kept a secret, but she still struggles in figuring them out. However, Elena is devoted to the welfare of her subjects, her family, and her friends. She is shown to hold her father in high esteem and looks to him for inspiration. Also like Sofia, she has a pragmatic approach to leadership and a disregard for her own personal safety.
Appearance[]
At Sixteen to twenty years of age, Elena is a young girl who has dark skin complexion, with a slender figure and amber-brown eyes. She has ruby red lips and long, wavy, dark brown hair tied in a ponytail.
Her signature outfit is a long red sleeveless over-skirt dress stylized with matching coral gauze ruffle/flounces around the elastic neckline and on the side and bottom with an attached ivory-colored underskirt. Around her waist is a golden belt held in place with a golden buckle. She wears brown high heeled shoes with flowery patterns, orange flowers in the right side of her hair, a yellow and light blue beaded bracelet, and gold oval-shaped earrings.
History[]
Early life[]
Elena was born the firstborn child of King Raul and Queen Lucia of the kingdom of Avalor, where she lived a happy life alongside her family, which consisted her parents and her little sister Isabel, grandparents Francisco and Luisa, as well as her maternal first cousin, Esteban, who she loved as a brother mainly because his parents passed away during a boat trip and he had come to live with them. On the day of her 15th birthday, as was the family tradition, her mother gave her (as her birthday gift) one of their families most prized heirlooms: a pink amulet said to have magical powers that would protect it's wearer from any harm, though didn't think she would ever need it, what she didn't know was that one day her and her family's life would change forever.
One fateful day an entire year later, while her parents were away and had just gotten back, Elena headed outside the castle to greet them, when all of a sudden a evil sorceress named Shuriki suddenly appeared before them, hungry for control of the kingdom, Elena could only watch in horror as the sorceress killed her parents right in front of her which caused her to run away from the scene as Shuriki continued her attack. Knowing that Shuriki is coming for the rest of her family, the royal wizard at the time Alacazar decided to protect the rest of them by sealing them all in an enchanted painting, but since he needed time to cast the spell, Elena boldly decided to fight Shuriki on her own, but because she didn't have any magic, Elena could do nothing against her as Shuriki tried to kill her with a direct attack.
Fortunately the Amulet did prove itself to live up to it's legend and it saved Elena's life... just in the most craziest way possible: pulling her soul inside it, and when Shuriki assumed she succeeded in killing the princess, Alacazar picked up the amulet and quickly set out to free Elena. At the suggestion of some magical advice, Elena and Alacazar spent the next 41 years traveled across the Everrealm to find a special princess who could free her, passing it on from princess-to-princess in the hopes one of them would be the one to free her by testing them by giving them gifts or curses depending how they act, but none them proved to be just the right one. Unfortunately Alacazar soon grew too old to continue their search for the princess, but he heard wind that inside a giant tree in the kingdom of Enchancia in an enchanted Library filled with numerous enchanted books that have no ending, & thinking it's their last best shot in freeing Elena, Alacazar took refuge their and used magic to turn himself into a book telling Elena's current life in hopes a story-keeper would one day give it a happy ending.
The Amulet itself (with Elena still inside it) was then transferred to the the ownership of Enchancia's royal family but they had no idea that Elena was inside it, she soon found herself in the protection of Enchancia's princess Matilda, but when she soon grew up and abdicated the throne to become a duchess/adventurer, Elena would find herself in the Castle's jewelry room. That is until Matilda's younger brother Roland, who became King in Matilda's place, re-married a young shoemaker named Miranda and in-turn step-fathered a young girl named Sofia, seeing another chance to see if she's the princess she needs, Elena made the amulet glow to get Roland to notice it and give the amulet as a welcome-gift to her.
Elena of Avalor[]
Season 1[]
When Elena turned fifteen, her mother Queen Lucia gave her the Amulet of Avalor, a magical amulet that her parents hoped would always protect her from harm. One year later, Shuriki, an evil power-hungry sorceress from the Northern Islands, invaded Avalor and killed her parents. Alacazar, Avalor's Royal Wizard, came up with a way to save her family. Because he needed time to cast it, Elena made the choice to face Shuriki on her own. When Shuriki tried to strike her down, the Amulet saved Elena by pulling her inside it. When the Amulet was given to Sofia the First of Enchancia, Elena knew she was the one who would free her.
Once freed from the amulet where she stay for 41 years, Elena, orphaned, after finally defeating Shuriki, thought she would become queen, but she is informed she will only get to be crown princess and will have to spend some time in training until she's ready to be crowned. In the meantime, she will rule alongside a Grand Council. In 'First day of Rule,' Elena learns about the mysterious theft of ships and pursues them instead of going to a meeting but ends up captured alongside a girl named Naomi. Elena and her allies fight the Noblins, however, Elena is informed by her spirit guide Zuzo that she is acting to rashly so she approaches the Noblins diplomatically and learns they were enslaved by Shuriki so lets them borrow the ships. At the end of the episode, Elena admits she may not be fully ready to rule and appoints Estaban, Naomi and her grandparents to her Grand Council to help her.
In 'Spellbound,' Elena appoints Mateo, the grandson of the wizard Alacazar, her new Royal Wizard. During a celebration being held to commemorate this, a Malvago named Fiero attacks and petrifies everyone. He tries to steal Alacazar's old spellbook, the Codex Maru, but Mateo manages to beat Fiero with Elena's encouragement and save everyone.
In 'A Day to Remember,' it is the day of the dead. Elena meets with a women named Dona who is a ghost. She asks Zuzo how she is able to see a ghost and Zuzo explains its because of the lingering magic of the amulet. On Dona's behalf, Elena helps her grandchildren Carmen and Julio rediscover their grandmother's recipe so they won't have to sell the restaurant, Afterwards, Elena learns that Isabelle hasn't shown up to the celebration because she doesn't want to go though Elena finds her and convinces her to go. The ghosts of Elena's parents are then seen watching over them.
In 'The Scepter of Light, Elena discovers her scepter has magic which she gained through her time in the amulet when she says the word 'Blaze" and her furniture is set on fire. This coincides with the attack of the moth fairy Orizaba who Elena realizes she can defeat using the scepter's light powers which she does but at the cost of her own health as the scepter takes energy from her.
In 'The Realm of the Jacquins,' Elena attends Skylar's little brother Nico's testing so he can become an official Guardian. She pushes hard for him to be able to retake the test when he fails even though that's against Jacquin rules to the extent she enters the Realm of the Jacquins to speak to the Jacquin king and ask him to let Nico retake the test though he refuses, however, it turns out that Nico's failure was due to sabotage by Victor and Carla Delgado who followed Elena into the Jacquin realm so they could free the forest spirit Marimonda. Elena and the Jacquins end up working together to stop Marimonda. Afterwards, Elena meets with the sun bird Quita Moz who tells her that he foresees a great test in her future which she must overcome in order to rule.
Season 2[]
In 'The Jewel of Maru,' Elena learns that Victor and Carla are trying to steal the titular jewel from the temple where it is kept so goes to stop them but ends up failing and getting trapped under rubble. She then is visited by her parents who encourage her to continue (due to it being the day of the dead again) which allows Elena to escape and save the jewel.
In 'A Spy in the Palace,' Elena and her family are preparing for a celebration when a girl named Rita who claims to be Armando's cousin (but is actually Carla in disguise under the orders of Shuriki) arrives at the palace. Naomi is suspicious of her while Elena if trusting which leads to a falling out between the two and Elena giving "Carla" more power over carnival preparations though Naomi later apologizes, making Elena think she was right.
In 'The Rise of the Sorcerers,' Elena notices some weird things about "Rita" like her hair changing but still isn't convinced there's anything going on with her though Naomi is still uncertain. After the dance for the celebration, Naomi pulls Elena into the palace to elaborate on her suspicions when a revived Shuriki appears alongside Fiero, Victor and Carla to Elena's total horror. Elena and Shuriki duel but Elena smashes her wand, forcing the villains to retreat while Elena unsuccessfully attempts to pursue them.
In the middle arc of season 2, Elena and her friends learn Shuriki is after three pieces which when put together create the scepter of night which can challenge Elena's scepter of light. Mateo tries to selfishly take the scepter for himself but Elena manages to back him down. Shuriki eventually manages to get the scepter due to having lead Elena away from her friends by using Elena's desire to get revenge on her for what she did to her parents. To combat Shuriki's new power, Elena starts training with Quita Moz to master everything her own scepter can do.
In 'Song of the Sirena's,' Elena and her family are visiting their cousin, Duke Cristobal while worrying about what Shuriki will do next. Elena tries to broker a peace deal between the sirenas and Cristobal but his stubbornness makes that impossible. During a parade, Elena's float is lead away from the rest and she is ambushed and hit with the scepter of night by Shuriki causing her to fall into the water though she's saved by the sirenas. With the sirena's help, Elena is able to return to the surface world and free her family who had been captured by Shuriki. When Shuriki pursues her, the sirena's shake her boat. Elena and Shuriki end up dueling though Elena tricks Shuriki into thinking she had killed her only to appear behind her and bring a fiery end to the vile witch once and for all.
In 'Not Without my Magic,' Elena learns from Quita Moz that stopping Shuriki was not the great test her predicted which shocks and upsets her. She is forced to give her scepter to Quita Moz for repairs because it was damaged by Shuriki during their duel which makes her nervous.
In 'Naomi Knows Best,' Elena and her friends are lured to King Joaquin's kingdom under false pretenses and captured by the Delgado's who want to kill Elena by draining her of her magic using the jewel left by the scepter of night, however, Mateo and her friends save her, destroy the jewel and capture Victor though Ash and Carla escape.
Season 3[]
In 'Sister of Invention,' Isabel stows away with Elena and her friends on a mission to stop the Delgado women. Elena, upon finding her, is at first unwilling to allow her to join their team but after she helps find the Delgados and saves her life with her invention Elena concedes
In 'To Save a Sunbird,' Elena's sectper is fully repaired by the sunbirds though when Elena learns Hool drained so much of her lifeforce into fixing the scepter that it weakened her, Elena dedicates herself to save Hool
In 'The Magic Within,' Elena learns that Ash is trying to gain power using the Well of Crystals on the Mystic Isles so goes to stop her but ends up being knocked into the pit and absorbing its immense power though that power only activates when her emotions are intense. Her emotions can create magic and her dress change of color accordingly ( Red: Normal, Orange: Anger, Yellow: Joy, Blue: Sadness, Purple: Fear/Stress, Pink: Love, Cyan: Calm, White: Forgiveness). Elena manages to have the Delgado's all captured but her powers lead to her learning of Esteban's betrayal. Elena has Esteban locked up in fury though he escapes with the Delgado's to Elena's dismay.
In 'Sugar Rush,' Elena's family decides to reopen an old chocalcate shop they once operated though Elena's anxiety causes magic to seep into the chocolate which causes weird things to happen across Avalor. Elena and her family work to reverse its effects after learning their grandmother had opened the shop because of family. Elena is also given Esteban's former position.
In 'Dreamcatcher,' Elena and Esteban meet again though Elena still cannot accept her cousin's apologies and disowns him which pushes him further toward Ash
In 'Spirit of a Wizard,' Elena and Mateo are able to revive Alacazar and gain his advice though his lifeforce is bound to the book. Mateo successfully manages to fully revive Alacazar but he sacrifices himself to stop Ash's forces and give Elena and Mateo a change to take the scepter of light back from the hands of the villains and foil their plans to everyone's anger
In 'Giant Steps,' Elena and her friends return to the Realm of the Jacquisn so they can prevent Ash from recruiting new allies. Naomi wants to go after Tziloco so she can collect the reward but fails and gets Elena's arm injured. The two manage to make amends and stop Ash's forces and Naomi decides to return to Avalor
In 'Dia de Las Madres,' Elena sees an old memory of Estaban through her scepter and starts to understand where his betrayal came from due to him not feeling a part of the family, something she didn't see at first. As they view the old memories, Elena sees how Esteban felt left out due to the loss of his parents. This makes Elena more sympathetic to Esteban to the point she can call him cousin again.
In 'Elena's Day Off' and 'To Queen or not to Queen,' Elena is preparing for her coronation while dealing with the threat of Ash and her allies. In the former, Elena is forced by her Grand Council to take a day off but she is unable to and keeps trying to micromanage things from afar which ends up causing more trouble. In the latter, Zuzo gives Elena a glimpse at a world in which Esteban rules instead of her which is terrible and encourages Elena to step up.
In the final episode 'Coronation Day,' Ash plans on releasing the Four Shades of Awesome into Avalor to win. Elena and her friends try to stop them and nearly suceed but fail in the end and Elena ends up getting trapped in the spirit world with Ash and forced to compete in an Oloaball game and win if she wants to leave. ELena recruits her parents on her team who reassure her that she isn't a failure by explaining how their policy failures lead to Shuriki's attack which Esteban advised them against, something that gives Elena more context into Esteban's choice. They advise her not to pursue Esteban. During the game, Elena figures out that the winning team will actually end up stuck in the spirit world so intentionally loses, allowing her to be sent back and trapping Ash. Elena and her friends defeat all the Four Shades except for Cahu who tries to turn Elena to stone but is blocked bt Esteban. This causes Elena's magic to overflow, destroying Cahu and reviving everyone turned to stone including Esteban. Elena forgives Esteban which had been her true test all along and is crowned queen of Avalor in a beautiful and packed coronation.
