Hero Overview

I told you earlier that I purchased you to be my apprentice, and that's still true. But, you should know, I also hope to make you my bride.
~ Elias' confession to Chise.
Besides, if we do not act quickly, it might begin sapping more magic out of its victims. So I believe you could say we're both eager to prevent additional harm from coming to our friends.
~ Elias agreeing with Chise to help out.

Elias Ainsworth is the titular deuteragonist in the manga/anime series The Ancient Magus' Bride. Elias is the master/teacher and fiancé of Chise Hatori.

He is voiced by Ryota Takeuchi in the Japanese version and Brian Mathis in the English version. While he takes female forms, he is voiced by Sayaka Kinoshita in the Japanese version and Kristy Sims in the English version.

Appearance[]

In his normal form, he is a bipedal humanoid mage with the skull of a wolf and the horns of a goat in place of a head, with glowing red beams of light in the empty sockets of his eyes. He is noticeably taller than an average human, with the average person only reaching his chest. His neck is the only part that shows his skin, which is dark purple, although he would take off his gloves on rare occasions.

He wears a three-piece suit: a black robe with sleeves embroidered with white threads, paired with a black vest, blue in the manga, and a white undershirt. He also sports a blue stone bolo necktie tucked just beneath his collar.

Personality[]

He lacks human emotions, but after some time caring for Chise, he has slowly developed a true fondness for her. However, his innate lack of understanding certain human emotions makes Lindel call him a child, one example of this being when Titania and her husband asked about him and Chise having children, he felt an "unknown feeling" in his gut he couldn't identify. He dislikes children; he says they do not have magic powers, but they are talented in being able to see the true nature of things, so sometimes he is found out. Whenever he gets annoyed by someone, he would often say "die" as a reply.

Despite his appearance, he is generally gentle and polite with humans and shows a great interest in them. He understands why humans feel the emotions they do, but has never experienced them himself.

History[]

His origins are a mystery. It is hinted that he was born from the shadows of the forest, and he is British-American, but his human-like traits also imply that he was a mage who dabbled in black magic, consequently losing his humanity and memories. He was apprenticed by Lindel in Chicago and became a great student, but at a certain cost where his magic, or at least a tragedy, turned him into something ugly, after which he ran away until hiding his face from the public, sometime after that traveled to London, England and entered his studies on more magic and found out that there was more than it would seem hidden among the books.

Plot[]

Elias purchased Chise and took her in, hoping to prevent her death. When he brought Chise to his home in London, he gave her an Adder Stone to keep track of her just in case if she ever runs away. Later that evening, he spots Chise leaving and follows her within her shadow to avoid having her taken into the land of the Fae by the Aerials and returns her to his home to rest for two days. After resting, he traveled with Chise where he introduces her to Angelica Burgley, who would taught her how to use crystal poppies.

When they return home, they find Simon waiting for them outside, and they are given three assignments to handle for the Church. Elias accepted these assignments. There they run into a dragon, under Lindel's command, that snatched Chise away while Elias hides in her shadow, bringing her to the Land of the Dragons. The two are introduced as being old acquaintances for the last 300 years at least, where they discuss Nevin's passing and that Chise will have a short lifespan if something isn't done soon. Their next task takes them to Ulthar, where the King of Cats requests that they deal with a blight in the lake. Elias goes off to investigate the magical residue he's been sensing until Alice drops Chise into the water, and he pulls her out before returning that night to try and purify the blight. Alice and Renfred appeared, wanting to claim it for themselves, but once Chise scatters it and guides the souls within it to their final rest, both parties depart from Ulthar. The effort again exhausts Chise, but Oberon, Spriggan, and Titania appear to help her recover shortly afterward. Their final task is investigating a series of murders at a local Church, thought to be caused by a Church Grim. Elias goes off to investigate once more, only to return after Chise has captured Alice. Once they learn that Joseph is involved in the case and he stabbed Chise, Elias turns into his monstrous form in front of her for the first time in an attempt to kill him until Renfred shoots Joseph in the back of the head. He settles down afterward and has to keep Chise from using her magic recklessly until she forged a contract with Ruth, and they drove Joseph off.

After returning home, Elias has trouble with his beast form for a few days afterward in stabilizing it until Chise seeks him out and confesses she wants to know more about him when Lindel's familiar appears to tell him that Chise has to go pick up her wand alone. Left waiting for her return, Elias copes with the feeling of loneliness for the first time when he receives a messenger bird from Renfred telling Elias to let Chise know about the College, but he destroys it and has Silky bury the remains in the garden.

After Chise found herself near death due to exhausting her magic after creating Fairy Ointment, Elias took her into the Land of the Fae to recover. He has an audience with Titania, where he rejects her offer to reside in that world along with Chise. When Stella crossed paths with Chise and Elias, she begged them to help find her young brother Ethan, who got lost in the snowy forest. They discovered that Ashen Eyes had kidnapped the kid and he also took Elias hostage as well. After Chise and Stella rescued Ethan and Elias from Ashen Eyes, the two quickly became friends. Their friendship caused Elias to become envious.

Powers & Abilities[]

He can control and also turn himself into shadows, and when angry enough, he takes on a more monstrous form. He can even change his head to a human’s using magic. He's also incredibly durable, as he's able to block the giant berserk salamander's fire breath and able to revert the salamander back to its normal self. He's able to split his skull in half to gain another self, in a dog-like form, but he would be much weaker.
