“ | Deal's off, Tilda. | „ |
~ Sobeck warning Tilda van der Meer of the Zenith's theft of GAIA. |
“ | Guys--you know me. I'm-I'm no good at endings. At letting things end. So um, let's not. | „ |
~ Sobeck's most famous quote. |
“ | I’m okay with this. I want to go home. Goodbye. | „ |
~ Sobeck's last words after sealing GAIA Prime's door. |
Elisabet Sobeck is the posthumous overarching protagonist of the Horizon franchise.
Brilliant and talented, Sobeck is one of the most influential and legendary Old World scientists in Aloy's world, whose achievements were undeniable and exceptional, including stopping the climate crisis of 2040 known as the Die-Off and the founding of green company known as Miriam Technologies.
Sobeck would later spearhead the creation of a top-secret terraforming system known as Project Zero Dawn through a hyper-intelligent AI known as GAIA and its Subordinate Functions, in order to save life on Earth from the existential threat of out-of-control machines known as the Faro Plague. Her lasting efforts later saved Earth and gave humanity a second chance.
Nearly 1,000 years later, Sobeck's genetic code would soon be used by GAIA to create Aloy after HADES became a rogue AI, bent on using the ancient MINERVA technology to start the second Faro Plague, which was soon averted by the Nora Huntress and her allies, thus saving life on the tribal Earth and ending a second, permanent extinction.
She is voiced by Ashly Burch and modeled after Hannah Hoekstra. Burch and Hoekstra also played Aloy and Beta in the same series, while the former also voiced other characters such as Chloe Price from Life is Strange.
Appearance[]
Sobeck is a middle-aged woman with short red hair and green eyes. Her outfit consists of a futuristic-looking grey blouse and pants, as well as a blue shirt on the inside, and black shoes.
Personality[]
Sobeck was a brilliant and compassionate scientist who committed her life to bettering the world in which she lived, a trait that was heavily influenced from her mother Miriam, when she was only a child. Her strong desire to make a good difference prompted her to use her tremendous knowledge in robotics and engineering to pursue a career building robots that were both environmentally friendly and helpful to humans.
Her principles led her to be adamantly opposed to the use of technology in military applications, which is why she left Faro Automated Solutions when the business planned to enter the military technology industry, growing disillusioned of its questionable business practices. Sobeck despised individuals like Ted Faro, who were solely concerned with their public image and earnings at the price of their lives.
Sobeck was tenacious in her pursuit of the completion of Project Zero Dawn and the restoration of life following its extinction. For her, the massive death toll inflicted by the Faro Plague was a source of immense anguish. She placed a high value on empathy, noting that in order for GAIA to perform its duty, it needed to be able to feel emotions and care for people. Above all, she was selfless and determined, willing to give her life to preserve Zero Dawn and her fellow Alphas.
Sobeck, on the other hand, struggled to connect with people, as she was a workaholic who rarely shared her burden.
Quotes[]
“ | Now your choice is what I tell them. Sign, and I’ll tell them the wealthiest corporation on Earth has guaranteed the funds necessary to build Zero Dawn exactly as I’ve designed it. Or don’t sign- and I will make sure they and everyone else on this planet knows the real cause of the glitch. | „ |
~ Sobeck threatening Ted Faro with an ultimatum to fund Zero Dawn. |
“ | Were you not listening?! Robots can’t do the fighting for you this time! When it comes to hacking this rogue swarm is an apex predator! Anything automated you throw at it, they will hijack and take over! | „ |
~ Sobeck arguing at the USRC military commanders about the severity of the Faro Plague. |
“ | You’ve heard the bad news, and it’s all true. The Faro Plague is devouring the biosphere. But does that have to be the end? What if we could give life - a future? What if we could build a kind of seed, from which, on a dead planet, life could blossom anew? This is the aim - the hope - of Project: Zero Dawn: to create a super intelligent fully-automated… terraforming system - And bring life back from lifelessness. What would such a system require? At its core, it would need a true AI. Fully capable of making the trillions of decisions necessary to reconstitute the biosphere. An immortal guardian, devoted to the re-flourishing of life. We call it GAIA. Mother Nature as an AI. But that’s just the core of the system. She will need to be surrounded and empowered by a comprehensive suite of Subordinate Functions. Think of them as extensions of GAIA’s mind, each dedicated to a specific purpose. Now these aren’t Als, but make no mistake - each presents an engineering challenge more profound… than anything the human species has ever before attempted. Hardware that preserves and gestates the billions of seeds and embryos from which life will be reborn. The construction of underground facilities to hold it all. And that’s just the start. We don’t have to build the entire system. The beauty of a fully automated terraforming system is that it can build itself. Now, over the days to come, you’ll learn how all these Functions - all these pieces that you’ll be working on - fit together. How we’ll race the clock to execute our harvest initiatives, write the software, build the tech and the facilities. How we’ll lock it down and seal it up before the inevitable occurs. But even more important, you’ll know how it doesn’t end here. How GAIA will generate these deactivation codes General Herres talked about… and build the transmission arrays to broadcast them, shutting down the Faro robots for good. How GAIA will not just build but imagine any conceivable robot it needs to do its work across centuries… from detoxifying the Earth’s ravaged atmosphere and poisoned seas… to the re-greening of the Earth from cryo-preserved seed stocks… to re-wilding the Earth with animal life. And then, when all that is done, how a new generation of human beings, spawned at Cradle facilities around the globe… will partake of APOLLO: the vast archive of human knowledge and cultural achievement from which they will learn of us, our world, and most important how not to repeal our mistakes. It’s not an impossible dream. It is within our grasp if we work tirelessly and stop at nothing to achieve it. We can’t stop life from ending. But if you will help me help GAIA - we can give it a future. Join me, and help make that future real. | „ |
~ Sobeck introducing Project Zero Dawn. |
“ | But what if - ? GAIA… there’s nothing left out there… you can’t even survive unless you’re wearing an environmental suit. There are billions dead… in fear and agony. What if… What if it was all for nothing…? | „ |
~ Sobeck worrying about the status of the ancient world. |
Trivia[]
- Elisabet Sobeck's surname is derived from the ancient Egyptian god Sobek, the god of fertility and the military, with the former alluding to Sobeck's desire to save Earth from global extinction through GAIA and give it a second chance.
- One part of Sobek's occupation as the Egyptian god of military is completely ironic for Sobeck, considering that she is vehemently opposed of militarisation of technology, as shown when she left FAS due to the direction of the company.
- Elisabet would have had to travel at least 270 miles (434 km) in real-life to reach her house in Carson, Nevada, given that the game is set in a shrunk-down version of Utah and Colorado.
- When GAIA inquired about the possibility of having children, Elisabet expressed her desire for a daughter who was curious, wilful, and compassionate. In the form of Aloy, Elisabet would obtain such a daughter after her death, nine centuries later.
