Ellen "The Lady" is the main protagonist of The Quick and the Dead.

Ellen is portrayed by Sharon Stone.

History[]

In 1881, Ellen "The Lady" rides into the town of Redemption, signing up in a bracket based dueling contest. The contest is overseen by John Herod, the town's tyrannical and ruthless mayor. Ellen soon afterward meets a certain villain turned preacher, Cort, who she later learns once lived under the leadership and instruction of John Herod. Not too long after her arrival, Ellen demonstrates her marksmanship and skill as a gunfighter by drawing and shredding to bits a rope to which Cort had been tied and sentenced to hang from. She meets her fair share of the town's more notable inhabitants: Herod's son and general store owner, "The Kid", the flashy Ace Hanlon, and reunites with the quieter and reserved Doc Wallace. Ellen soon becomes one of the most renowned gunfighters in the locale.  Throughout the movie, Ellen, Cort, and Herod continuously eliminate contestants, with Herod eventually killing his own son. When she attempts to leave the town and contest behind her, Doc Wallace reassures her that a job yet remains to be done. Wallace hands her the only item he could salvage from her father's corpse: her father's Marshal's badge. Ellen realizes that if she continues to allow her fear and inaction to control her, Herod will continue to hold the reins to his tyrannical rule over the people. Eventually, Cort and Ellen face off in their arranged duel bracket. She refuses to draw, prompting Cort to make good on his certain, yet reluctant promise to fire if she does not kill him first. Cort fires and Ellen falls, seemingly fatally struck. Later in the film, she returns to town unscathed, and the camera pans to the local blind boy clutching a bottle of red ink, implying and explaining her previously faked death. She reveals her identity to Herod by tossing her father's badge at his feet. In the midst of the commotion, Cort swiftly eliminates the remainder of Herod's men standing watch on the town's rooftops, Ellen returns her attention back to Herod, ultimately drawing faster and killing him. After contemplating the finality of her actions, she entrusts Cort with her father's badge, and effectively, the welfare of the townspeople into his hands. Ellen subsequently climbs her mount and rides out of town.
