“ | There is nothing more gratifying to my soul than being the reason for a child's smile. To be the spark that ignites all their hopes and dreams. We owe everything to these children; this company and its toys are nothing without them. | „ |
~ Elliot explaining his motivation for founding Playtime Co. |
Elliot Ludwig is the overarching protagonist of the Poppy Playtime franchise.
He is the founder of Playtime Co. and an esteemed toymaker who desired to make children across the world happy with his toys. However following his death his company would come under the tyrannical rule of Leith Pierre and his old protege Harley Sawyer. The two would initiate the Bigger Bodies Initiative and transform orphan children into monstrous toys. The toys eventually banded together and killed every worker in the factory and took it for themselves. As a result Playtime was closed for good and Elliot's legacy and efforts were thus tainted.
He was voiced by Tom Schalk.
Appearance[]
Elliot's face is always either blacked out or blurred in photos depicting him. However, he seems to be a Caucasian man wearing a grayish-blue business suit. It is also mentioned that he is quite tall being 6'2.
Personality[]
Elliot Ludwig was well known for his generosity, kindness, empathy and ingenuity. He did not create Playtime Co. for the sake of money or fame but a genuine desire to make people happy especially children. He even states that he lives to make people smile, claiming that a smile is hope, love and understanding. He also believed that hopes and dreams were the key to creating a better world. To showcase this dedication he not only made toys to make people happy but he even opened his own orphanage to give children a safe home and a chance to be adopted into a loving family.
He also had a strong determination as despite his wife divorcing him and losing a member of his family to tragedy, he never shook his beliefs and morals, in fact this only strengthen them. He also wanted to nurture the youth and believed they were the key to creating a brighter future. He created the Young Geniuses Program to do just that and enjoyed working with his students. He didn't seem to like negativity or selfishness, he was shown to be disturbed by his protégé Harley Sawyer, being upset that he cared little for humanity and more for personal progress. Despite this he still wanted to see the best in people even when it was not there and tried to push Sawyer in the right direction but his efforts failed. Despite expelling Sawyer for his arrogance and hostile nature he bore no ill will towards him and in fact sympathized with him believing that he could change for the better.
However there appeared to be somewhat of a mysterious and perhaps dark side to him. His neighbors noticed that he would depart from his house and return at ungodly hours. There was even a report of a dead child being found in his estate. However it’s unknown if Elliot was actually involved in their death.
Synopsis[]
Elliot Ludwig's past is unknown but it's likely he was born around the early 1900s. Sometime in the year 1930 he founded the Playtime Co. toy factory to make children happy with his toys. However he became so engrossed in his work his wife Molly divorced him. Despite this his determination did not waiver and he continued to work hard to produce toys. Eventually in the year 1950 he would make his first successful toy Poppy Playtime. Poppy was a porcelain doll with the ability to both speak and respond to people. Poppy led the company into success and put Elliot and his factory on the map. In 1960 however a tragedy occurred when a close family member of his died. Elliot then went on to create more toys such as Bron the dinosaur and the Make A Friend Machine.
In 1976, Elliot began encouraging his employees to adopt orphans to give them a safe home. To support this of this he opened Playcare, Playtime Co’s very on on-site orphanage. It had everything needed for a growing child, a home, a school, a counselors office, a toystore and even a playhouse.
At some point before or after this he started the Young Geniuses Program which was made to mentor young minds and discover new ideas and sciences. One of these youths was a young man named Harley Sawyer. Eliot and Harley would grow a close relationship with one another, with Elliot being the only one who could break Sawyers cold demeanor. However, Elliot noticed a dark side to his protege. Sawyer was not only arrogant and brash, he didn’t care about progress for the sake of humanity and only wanted to further his own agendas. Anytime Elliot tried to steer Sawyer in the right direction, he would insult him and call him soft. For this reason Elliot made the tough decision to expel him from the program hoping that he could one day gain humility and empathy. However, Sawyer was enraged at this decision and grew a hatred for Elliot.
In 1991, Elliot Ludwig had unfortunately passed away. However authorities found the mutilated body of a young boy in his estate with various organs and bones missing. That on top of Elliot’s strange behavior noted by his neighbors before his death led to some doubts about his benevolent nature. Playtime Co. quickly ran to their founder’s defense and intended to clear his name in court and protect his legacy. It’s heavily implied that someone may have planted the body there to ruin Elliot’s good name. Things would only get worse from there when Leith Pierre took over the company. He hired Elliot’s old protege the now Dr. Harley Sawyer who initiated the Bigger Bodies Initiative. Harley would use Playcare to transform poor orphans into giant toys for the company to use as slaves to save money. With this act Sawyer and Pierre effectively spat on Elliot’s benevolent name and efforts. Ultimately, the experiments fought back and killed nearly every worker in the factory as revenge for their mistreatment. As a result Playtime Co. was shut down and Elliot Ludwig’s legacy was forever destroyed.
