Elminster Aumar, the Sage of Shadowdale, is a fictional character appearing in the Forgotten Realms campaign setting for the Dungeons & Dragons fantasy role-playing game. He is a powerful wizard featured in several novels by Forgotten Realms creator Ed Greenwood. Certain aspects of his appearance and demeanor seem to echo Gandalf, Merlin, or Odin.
Elminster was one of the first characters Greenwood created for the Forgotten Realms. Information about him can be found in virtually all Forgotten Realms game products, but the novels in The Elminster Series are perhaps the most definitive sources of information. The series includes Elminster: The Making of a Mage, Elminster in Myth Drannor, The Temptation of Elminster, Elminster in Hell, and Elminster's Daughter.
Bio[]
Elminster Aumar, most often referred to as the "Sage of Shadowdale" or the "Old Mage", was one of the most famous and powerful wizards in all of Faerûn. He was also considered the Realms' most preeminent sages—whose name was known from The Sword CoastCoast, to the far-off jungles of Chult and the eastern Realm of Thay― as well as the favored Chosen of Mystra, Goddess of Magic. Over the course of his centuries-long life Elminster had saved people of Faerûn from destruction or subjugation on numerous occasions, and earned himself legendary reputation among its people.
Abilities[]
Elminster is one of the greatest wizard Toril has ever known (with the legendary Netherese characters Larloch, Karsus and Iolaum being the only ones above him), one of the most powerful beings and a charismatic man who has a vast array of acquaintances which he can call upon. He is quite capable of defeating a whole group of ancient evil mages and most magic characters speak with respect and awe about him, even the morally ambiguos Khelben Blackstaff Arunsun.
Physical Appearance[]
Elminster's most notable feature was his hawk-like nose, that distinguished him from his youth, throughout the years he spent as a woman, and well into manhood. He had a shock of stark black hair in his youth, and maintained a beard through most of his years that eventually went gray in his old age. El had vibrant blue eyes set under big bushy eyebrows that turned blue-gray later in life.
