Elphaba is the main protagonist of the famous Gregory McGuire novel, Wicked and its musical adaptation. She is the unlikely friend of Glinda. Her intention is to save Oz, but she eventually ends up becoming the Wicked Witch of the West.

She was portrayed by Idina Menzel who plays Queen Elsa from Disney's Frozen and Nancy Tremaine from Disney's Enchanted, and Maureen Johnson from another Broadway Musical, RENT.

In the musical, Elphaba is a belting mezzo-soprano.

Elphaba was named after the initials of original Oz author Lyman Frank Baum.
