That's Embarrassment. He's not really good at eye contact, or talking, but he's a really sweet guy.

'Cause she's got uuuuuus! Ooh, yeah! Right? 'Cause she's... Haha... M-Maybe...?
~ Embarrassment's first and only words in the film.

Embarrassment is a major character in Pixar's 28th full-length animated feature film Inside Out 2.

He is voiced by Paul Walter Hauser, who also portrayed Raymond "Stingray" Porter in Cobra Kai and Dark in Orion and the Dark.

Personality[]

Embarrassment, as his name suggests, is shown to be very shy and nervous around other emotions, and doesn't necessarily do a lot of spoken dialogue due to his timid nature. When interacting with someone else, Embarrassment is very awkward and always fails to properly respond to a greeting (like punching back a handshake).

Whenever his awkwardness gets too high for him to handle, he hides by zipping up his hoodie around his head, leaving only his big nose out. They also can't stand the embarrassment when Riley does something awkward, like when Joy controls Riley to say hello to Val and he cringes while banging his nose on the console, making Riley feel awkward too because it's his job to react when Riley does that anything socially unacceptable or embarrassing.

He is also very sensitive in nature, although he does not speak much. As always, whenever he appears around Sadness, he either gets embarrassed or shows little signs of comfort around her.

Embarrassment also takes on the role of a new emotion muscle when she understands Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust all at once as Anxiety stages a coup d'état to take over Riley while imprisoning the first generation of emotions. While it's unknown if the other new emotions had agreed with Anxiety's pragmatic decision to "package" and store away Riley's old emotions, Embarrassment would seem to be easily swayed by others due to his shyness. But despite this, he's well-intentioned and helps Sadness hide from the others when she manages to sneak back into HQ - the deciding factor. Embarrassment also has a compassionate side, shown when he was worried for Riley and her well-being due to Anxiety being harmful to her.

Appearance[]

Embarrassment is that which stands out most by his great size, symbolizing how embarrassment can magnify small things into bigger issues, and he is the greatest of all Emotions; about the same size as Bing Bong. He has bright pink skin, small fuchsia red eyes, a very large round nose for the size of his head, purplish pink hair, and slightly reddish cheeks. His wardrobe consists of a light purple hooded sweater with a drawstring, purple jeans, and red sneakers with white soles. His nose and cheeks usually turn deep red whenever he gets nervous.

Biography[]

Inside Out 2[]

Embarrassment is one of Riley’s new emotions, alongside Anxiety, Ennui and Envy. Embarrassment’s job is to protect Riley’s social life. He does not play that big of a role inside of headquarters apart from making Riley feel embarrassed when she does something socially humiliating. And due to his awkward nature, he can be easily manipulated, especially by Anxiety.

He initially goes along with her plan to create a “new” Riley in order to help her better circumnavigate high school; and that includes helping Anxiety kick all of the original emotions out of headquarters. But not long into Anxiety’s plan, Embarrassment views a memory that Anxiety created, and he starts to think her plan isn’t such a good idea.

This is proven true when one of the original emotions, Sadness, sneaks back into headquarters, and gets caught by Embarrassment. But due to Embarrassment having second thoughts about Anxiety’s plan, he keeps Sadness hidden. From this point on, Embarrassment starts acting as a type of double agent, pretending to go along with Anxiety’s plan, while helping Sadness return Riley back to her old self.

After Sadness gets busted and Anxiety literally destroys any chance Joy and the other OG emotions have of returning Riley back to normal, Embarrassment, Sadness and the other new emotions watch nervously as Anxiety takes control and forces Riley to play an aggressive final game of hockey. Riley is off to a good start by scoring two goals, but after Anxiety accidentally hurts Grace and gets Riley benched, Anxiety starts to get nervous that she might have messed up, and tries to force Riley to finish what she started.

This causes Riley to have an anxiety attack, as Anxiety is putting too much pressure on her. At this point, Embarrassment knows he has to do something, or else Riley could end up seriously hurt, or worse. He then tries to disconnect Riley’s new sense of self, but is incapable of doing it. Sadness, Envy and Ennui assist him, but they still can’t do it due to Anxiety becoming too strong.

At that moment, Joy, Disgust, Anger and Fear return to headquarters, and assist Embarrassment, Sadness and the others, but Anxiety is still too powerful. After Joy finally convinces Anxiety to stop, she and the others manage to disconnect Riley’s new sense of self and switch it back to the old one. Once Joy realizes neither sense of self will suit Riley anymore, she allows a new sense of self to form. She then hugs the new sense of self, and is then joined by Embarrassment and all the others in hugging it. This finally allows Riley to calm down and end her anxiety attack.

Fast forward a year later to when Riley is now in high school, and Embarrassment has finally gotten comfortable enough around the other emotions, especially Sadness, to start talking.
